The new deal will see MotoGP celebrate the Sachsenring's 100th anniversary in 2027 as motorcycle racing's premier class capitalises on the growing interest in the sport, which had over 250,000 fans attend the Grand Prix over the weekend. "Saxony is motor racing country... The new record attendance at the weekend showed once again how much we love motor racing in Saxony," Michael Kretschmer, Prime Minister of Saxony, said in a statement. Ducati's Marc Marquez won the German Grand Prix on Sunday to extend his world championship lead to 83 points, proving once again why he is known as the 'King of Sachsenring' after claiming his ninth MotoGP victory at the circuit. Attritional German GP matches record for fewest finishers in MotoGP era

When only 10 riders made it to the chequered flag in the MotoGP German Grand Prix, it equalled the record for the lowest number of finishers in a premier class race since the end of the 500cc era. Since the MotoGP era began in 2002, only the 2011 Australian Grand Prix has ended with as few finishers as Sunday's race at the Sachsenring. Advertisement But the 2025 German GP, with its 18 starters, was more attritional in percentage terms than Australia 2011. A mere 14 riders started that race at Phillip Island, after an already slim entry of 17 lost three further competitors. Jorge Lorenzo, Damian Cudlin and Ben Spies all withdrew from the grand prix due to accidents earlier in the weekend. Before the advent of MotoGP in 2002, however, there were multiple examples of fewer finishers to a race in the premier class of the motorcycle world championship. Only four riders completed the 500cc West German Grand Prix in 1974. That race, held in April on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, featured only seven starters – and presumably some lengthy silent spells for spectators – as home rider Edmund Czihak took the win for Yamaha. Lorenzo Savadori, Aprilia Racing Crash Lorenzo Savadori, Aprilia Racing Crash Most of the eight retirees at this year's German GP fell victim to the Sachsenring's notorious first corner, in a flurry of accidents late in the race. However, Pedro Acosta's low-side crash came at Turn 2 early in the contest – and Miguel Oliveira also crashed elsewhere on the track. Advertisement Among the mitigating circumstances for today's low number of finishers was the fact that Joan Mir didn't make a riding mistake of his own on his way to the Turn 1 gravel trap. Rather, he was collected by the Trackhouse Aprilia of Ai Ogura, making it a case of two falls from one error. While the regular number of contenders in a MotoGP race this year stands at 22, there were four absentees by the time Sunday came around in Germany. Somkiat Chantra (training accident) and Enea Bastianini (appendicitis) withdrew before the weekend. Then, on a wet Saturday, both Maverick Vinales and Franco Morbidelli were injured in accidents and were forced to pull out of the rest of the event. To read more articles visit our website.

Motorcycling-Aprilia's Martin set to return to MotoGP action at Czech Grand Prix

FILE PHOTO: MotoGP - Qatar Grand Prix - Lusail International Circuit, Doha, Qatar - April 13, 2025 Aprilia Racing's Jorge Martin in action REUTERS/Ibraheem Al Omari/File Photo (Reuters) -Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin will make his long-awaited return from injuries at the Czech Grand Prix later this month after he completed a testing session on Wednesday, his team Aprilia said. Wrist and ankle injuries sustained in a pre-season crash ruled him out of the first three rounds before another crash in his first race on board the Aprilia bike in Qatar in April led to a collapsed lung and bruised ribs. The 27-year-old was reacquainted with the bike on Wednesday when he completed 64 laps at the Misano circuit and the team is convinced he can compete at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno on the weekend of July 18-20, subject to an official medical check. "It's been a difficult journey... After more than three months I'm back on a MotoGP bike, so I'm super happy," Martin said. "It's a pity that I was injured so many times that we didn't make (race) the whole season, but now we are back. This is the most important thing and (I am) really looking forward to coming back really soon because the feeling today was great. "The plan is to come back in Brno, so I hope everything goes well during this week and I can train in normal circumstances." Although Martin was happy to hop back on the bike, he has made clear his intention to leave Aprilia ahead of the 2026 season. However, Aprilia said they were ready to go to court if needed as they expect the Spaniard to honour his two-year contract. Martin will miss this weekend's German Grand Prix, the halfway mark of the season. Ducati's Marc Marquez leads the riders' championship with 307 points while his brother Alex of Gresini Racing is 68 points behind in second. Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi is sixth in the championship, 186 points behind Marc Marquez. (Reporting by Rohith Nair in Bengaluru;Editing by Toby Davis)

Motorcycling-Aprilia's Bezzecchi wins British Grand Prix after Quartararo heartbreak

MotoGP - British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Britain - May 25, 2025 Aprilia Racing's Marco Bezzecchi celebrates with his team after winning the MotoGP race Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers SILVERSTONE, England (Reuters) -Marco Bezzecchi won a chaotic British Grand Prix on Sunday for Aprilia's first victory of the season in a race that was initially red flagged for an oil spill and riders crashed or retired while in the lead. The victory was a first for Aprilia since the Grand Prix of the Americas last year. LCR Honda's Johann Zarco came second and Ducati's Marc Marquez pipped Franco Morbidelli to finish third and extend his lead in the world championship. Both Alex Marquez and his brother Marc crashed while leading before the race was restarted for an oil spill while polesitter Fabio Quartararo took the lead at the second time of asking before being forced to retire due to an issue with his bike. Bezzecchi's victory was his first since the 2023 Indian Grand Prix and the Italian also became the 11th different winner at Silverstone in the last 11 races.
