Man arrested after discovery of two explosive devices
A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a number of attempted improvised explosive devices as part of an operation involving both gardaí and the PSNI.
It is understood two of the devices were found in counties Limerick and Monaghan in recent days.
An "unexplained device" was found at a premises near Foynes in Co Limerick last Friday afternoon.
Gardaí and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit attended the scene.
Meanwhile, there was a similar incident in the Muckno Street area of Castleblayney in Co Monaghan last Tuesday evening.
The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit also attended the scene in Co Monaghan and spent almost five hours on site before the device was rendered safe and handed over to gardaí.
A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested yesterday evening in connection with the discovery of both devices.
He is currently being held at a garda station in the northwestern region under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
He can be questioned for up to 48 hours, excluding potential rest periods.
The operation that led to the man's arrest involved national garda units, local gardaí in Co Monaghan and also PSNI officers.
Gardaí say they continue to liaise with their colleagues in the PSNI as part of the operation, which is said to be ongoing.
