It is understood two of the devices were found in counties Limerick and Monaghan in recent days.
An "unexplained device" was found at a premises near Foynes in Co Limerick last Friday afternoon.
Gardaí and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit attended the scene.
Meanwhile, there was a similar incident in the Muckno Street area of Castleblayney in Co Monaghan last Tuesday evening.
The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit also attended the scene in Co Monaghan and spent almost five hours on site before the device was rendered safe and handed over to gardaí.
A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested yesterday evening in connection with the discovery of both devices.
He is currently being held at a garda station in the northwestern region under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
He can be questioned for up to 48 hours, excluding potential rest periods.
The operation that led to the man's arrest involved national garda units, local gardaí in Co Monaghan and also PSNI officers.
Gardaí say they continue to liaise with their colleagues in the PSNI as part of the operation, which is said to be ongoing.

Credit: Alan Lewis An improvised explosive device (IED) has been recovered during a house search in Co Armagh. The PSNI attended the property in Keady on Monday after a man was arrested in connection with the discovery of bombs in the Republic of Ireland. The Army supported the PSNI raid which took place on Tassagh Road. 'Police have recovered and made safe an improvised explosion device and removed a number of items from a house search in Keady,' a PSNI spokesperson said. 'The items and the device were seized and taken away for further forensic examinations." The operation is focused on a potential link to a hoax device discovered in Co Armagh earlier this month. "Officers carried out a search at the location in support of an investigation by An Garda Síochána in Monaghan," the police spokesperson added. 'Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, police are investigating a potential link between this search and a security alert which occurred at the Ballyards Road area of Milford in Armagh on Tuesday July 1.' Gardai previously said the arrest in the Republic came as part of the investigation into the discovery of a number of attempted IEDs in the north-east and south-west of Ireland including at premises near Foynes in Co Limerick. The suspect, who is aged in his 40s , was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act during an operation in Co Monaghan on Sunday evening – the legislation allows Garda to hold a suspect for up to three days if a superintendent or the court approves the decision. The suspect is being investigated for possible links to dissident republicans. The probe also follows the discovery of devices in Castleblayney Co Monaghan last week. An Garda Síochána confirmed it was liaising with the PSNI. PSNI Detective Inspector Winters said: 'Our enquiries are continuing in relation to this investigation, as we work closely with our colleagues from An Garda Síochána. "We would appeal to anyone who may be able to assist to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 361 07/07/25. Man snared in cross-border paedophile sting to ask for bail

Sri Lankan national Thinira Liyanage, from Fortwell Court in Letterkenny, was first charged in January An alleged sex offender, snared in a cross-border paedophile hunter sting, is to ask for bail over delays in his case so far. During a brief mention of the case against Thinira Liyanage at Coleraine Magistrates Court, a prosecuting lawyer told the court a phone which belonged to the 37-year-old was sent for forensic examination in March. The full report, the lawyer added, has 'an estimated six month turnaround from that which puts us into September.' Sri Lankan national Liyanage, from Fortwell Court in Letterkenny, is in custody charged with meeting a child following sexual grooming, sexual communication with a child for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification and causing or inciting a child to engage in a sexual activity, alleged to have been committed between 14 December last year and 19 January this year. During a contested application for bail when Liyanage was first charged in January, a detective told the court how the PSNI received a report from an online group called Justice Reborn who 'said that they are with the defendant at Coleraine train station.' 'They further reported that they had been communicating with the defendant, using a decoy and that the defendant had engaged in sexual communication with the decoy, and this person was posing as a 14-year-old female child,' said the cop. Members of Justice Reborn also told police how Liyanage had apparently travelled all the way from his home in Letterkenny 'with the intention of meeting this child' and during follow-up searches of his car which was parked nearby, officers retrieved a bunch of flowers and a necklace in a jewellery box. 'The group handed police information and documentation and screenshots [of messages] between the defendant and the decoy,' said the detective adding that according to the group and the messages, the decoy 'repeatedly states that she is 14, that she is in school and that her mummy treats her like a baby.' 'Despite this the defendant repeatedly asked her to take pictures of herself including topless photos as well as making references to kissing, touching and her previous relationship experience,' the court heard in January. Thinira Liyanage Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 8th Arrested and interviewed, Liyanage told cops he was on multiple dating apps 'looking for a long term relationship' but that 'he suspected that it was a fake profile as he has experience of fakes.' He claimed he had asked the 'child' for a phone call because suspecting it was a fake profile 'he wanted to hear her voice' and that was also why 'he asked her if she was having her periods to try to verify her account.' The court heard how Liyanage maintained there was no sexual intent on his part and when asked why he would arrange to meet the girl if he believed the profile was fake, he further claimed that if it turned out she was an adult 'they might have had a relationship.' That desire for a 'long term relationship' was despite the fact that Liyanage is married and has a wife and child back in Sri Lanka. During further reviews however, a police officer revealed that around 200,000 images have been uncovered during examinations but that police have not yet established whether any are indecent. Thinira Liyanage The court has also heard that computer programmer Liyanage is 'anxious to enter a plea and dispose of the matter.' In court yesterday, defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said he was 'not totally satisfied' with the progress. He highlighted how Liyanage has been in custody since January, still on the original charges, and that recently, similar cases have resulted in either suspended sentences or sentences of ten months. 'I am going to apply for bail in this case,' he told Deputy District Judge Brian Archer and although he conceded Liyanage does not have a proposed address in NI, his family are getting a cash surety together 'if that would relieve the difficulty.' Remanding Liyanage back into custody, Judge Archer adjourned the case to 21 July.

Up to 100 staff kept in refinery plant as Gardai quiz man over 'viable bombs'

Gardaí have questioned a man in his forties in connection with the discovery of viable bombs in Limerick and Northern Ireland last Friday. Reliable sources said the man was being questioned by Gardaí as part of an ongoing cross border Garda - PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) investigation. One of the bombs was discovered close to the large alumina refinery Aughinish Alumina, located between Foynes and Askeaton, Co Limerick. The Rusal alumina giant, which owns the plant, had not responded to media queries sent to it last Sunday. It's understood that up to 100 of the 450 staff employed at the Rusal-owned Aughinish refinery were unable to leave the plant as a 350-metre security cordon was put in place allowing Gardaí and members of the Defence Forces respond at the scene for several hours between Friday night and Saturday morning. It's understood that Gardaí are no longer investigating the possibility that the bomb could have been a reaction to Russia's largest bombardment on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, last Thursday night. A spokesman for the Irish Defence Forces confirmed the bomb was 'viable', meaning it was capable of detonating and causing injuries or death. A statement provided by the Defence Forces read: 'On Friday evening, bomb experts from the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Síochána (AGS) in relation to a suspect device in the area of Askeaton, Co. Limerick. 'Following an assessment, the EOD team confirmed the device was viable, and it was rendered safe. The EOD Team then handed the scene over to AGS. "The army EOD unit were on scene for a total of six hours, from arrival on scene at 6.58pm, Friday, to departure at 01.04am, Saturday 5 July." Gardaí said they were 'alerted' to the bomb after its discovery at approximately 3.30pm last Friday, 'and a cordon was established' until the scene was declared safe. The area where the bomb was found is located close to a publicly-accessible nature walking trail. In February 2022, Gardaí launched an investigation into criminal damage at the entrance to Aughinish Alumina which was daubed with slogans in red paint, similar in nature to paint attacks at Russian embassies around the world in protest at Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Other bombs were found elsewhere in the north west of Ireland. A Garda statement on Tuesday read: 'As part of the investigation into the discovery of a number of attempted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Northeast and Southwest of the country, a male (40s) was arrested on Sunday, 6th July 2025. 'The male was arrested during an operation on Sunday evening involving National, Regional and local Garda units in County Monaghan.' Gardaí said the suspect was detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in the North Western Region. 'An Garda Síochána continues to liaise with our colleagues in the PSNI in relation to this investigation,' the statement continued.
