Advertisement THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit. Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland's first 'shopping frenzy'. During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne's 'Better Value' bargains. Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 - starting with apples and oranges. The retailer said: "Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town. "Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong. "Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas." The retailer's first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960. They added: "In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed. "Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England." Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people. 3 The item is ideal for summer holidays Credit: instagram

Family and friends honour Ashling Murphy on what would have been her 27th birthday

Family and friends of Ashling Murphy have paid tribute to her today on what would have been the murdered schoolteacher's 27th birthday. Ashling's life was tragically and callously short in January 2022 when, aged just 24 she was brutally killed by Jozef Puška, while she was doing nothing more than out for her routine evening run. Over three years on the schoolteachers' family and friends have rallied around to celebrate her all too short life. Ashling Murphy (Centre) with mother Kathleen, brother Cathal, father Raymond and sister Amy. The tight-knit Tullamore town of Blueball, from which Ashling was born, bred, raised and dearly loved, have established The Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund to ensure her enduring legacy. In a post on Instagram the community fund today paid tribute to Ashling 's legacy writing : 'Today we remember the life of Ashling on what would have been her 27th birthday — her fourth heavenly birthday away from those who loved her, and who continue to love and miss her so dearly. 'Though Ashling is no longer with us, her memory lives on, and her legacy endures in the countless lives she touched during her short but remarkable time with us — and in those she will continue to inspire in the years ahead. 'We remember Ashling for her love of music, her unwavering dedication to teaching and learning, her kindness, her generous spirit, and her radiant smile. 'Though she may be gone, there is comfort in knowing that her light still shines — in the hearts of those she loved, and in the many lives her legacy continues to uplift.' Ashling Murphy. An array of sport clubs, musical societies and other clubs have benefited from tens of thousands of funds raised in Ashling's honour by those whose lives she touched. Ashling Murphy's partner resolves BBC defamation case over victim impact statement

The boyfriend of murder victim Ashling Murphy has welcomed a resolution with the BBC in his defamation case against them - calling it the "end of a long and difficult chapter". Ryan Casey, the boyfriend of Ms Murphy, issued High Court defamation proceedings against the BBC over criticism on its political programme 'The View' of his victim impact statement at the murder trial of Jozef Puska. However, today both sides reached an agreement, with the BBC stating that while it stands behind its journalism in the episode, it is "happy to clarify that it does not consider Ryan Casey to be a criminal or a racist, or someone guilty of or attempting to incite hatred, or someone seeking to pose as a hero of the far right through his Victim Impact Statement". And in a statement released to the Irish Mirror, Mr Casey said he was glad to be at the end of the long process, which he felt left him silenced and censored. He said: "Today marks the end of a long and difficult chapter of frustration and censorship. I took this legal action against the BBC not solely out of anger, but out of a need for accountability and dignity for Ashling, for myself, our families, and for all victims who deserve to have their voices heard without such harsh criticism or judgment." "I welcome the resolution of these legal proceedings and the acknowledgements made by the BBC in their statement in open court today. I hope this serves as a reminder to all media organisations of the high level of responsibility that comes with running such public platforms. This was never just about me, it was about truth, fairness, and decency." Mr Casey went on to speak about the support he has received. "To everyone who has supported me either in person, by post, text messages, phone calls, social media posts and comments over the last three and a half years I can now finally come forward and say from the bottom of my heart thanks to each and every one of you. (Image: Mick O'Neill) "Don't think for a second I didn't see all your amazing support across all platforms, it was humbling to say the least. I'd like to also thank my lawyers, Ronan, Gerard and Marianne for their fantastic guidance, support and professionalism throughout this entire legal proceeding." And he stated that he's now finally free to use his voice again. "I now move forward, finally free to use my voice again, to honour Ashling and to advocate for the changes we desperately require in this country, for the increased safety measures we so clearly need, and for a society that listens to its people, free of gaslighting, blacklisting or censorship. "We all have a lot more in common than what separates us," he added. "Let's honour Ashling by building a better and safer Ireland, we all know we can do so much better." In their statement read out in Dublin's High Court this morning, the BBC said: "In the BBC's 30th of November 2023 episode of its live political programme 'The View,' Ryan Casey's Victim Impact Statement at the sentencing of his late partner's murderer was discussed. "The BBC stands by the journalism involved in this episode, which debated serious issues of public interest. The BBC is, however, happy to clarify that it does not consider Ryan Casey to be a criminal or a racist, or someone guilty of or attempting to incite hatred, or someone seeking to pose as a hero of the far right through his Victim Impact Statement. "The BBC acknowledges Mr Casey's personal tragedy. This statement clarifies any unintentional inferences that could have been drawn from the broadcast and has enabled the BBC and Ryan Casey to resolve this matter amicably." (Image: Instagram/@ashling_murphy_memorial_fund) Evil killer Jozef Puska, who pleaded not guilty to murder, was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing Ms Murphy 11 times on January 12, 2022, when she was out for a run along the Grand Canal outside Tullamore. At the sentencing hearing, Mr Casey made an emotional victim impact statement to the court. In it, he said directly to Puska: "I don't care where you end up, or what happens to you after today. But you smirked, you smiled, and you showed zero remorse throughout this trial, which sums up who you really are, the epitome of pure evil, but one thing is for sure, you will never ever harm or touch another woman ever again and when your day of reckoning comes, may you be in hell a whole half hour, before God even knows you're dead." But this wasn't always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir On March 31 of the year, Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer's archives recall as a 'shopping frenzy.' The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at 'pre-war prices' was one of the factors cited for the buzz. During the chaos a window was forced in and Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience. Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn't caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as Dunnes Stores now has 138 stores across Europe: 118 in the Republic of Ireland, 15 in Northern Ireland Five

This week's Uncharted: 'it's going to be hardcore'

When Ray Goggins describes a task as "hardcore" you know that he isn't being hyperbolic - and that's he labels the challenge faced on this week's Uncharted with Ray Goggins. On this Wednesday night's episode, paralympic gold medallist Ellen Keane and six-time All-Ireland Camogie star Ashling Thompson travel to Bolivia to the start of the fabled "Death Road" and meet Ray Goggins' latest challenging journey. This hair-raising descent of the world's most dangerous road is just the start of an incredible seven-day journey for Ellen, Ashling and Ray as they trek close to 100km through the dense cloud forest of Bolivia. The trio have to negotiate raging rivers, punishing terrain and wild jungle as they climb ever higher into the Andean mountains. As the trio climb higher into the mountains, the altitude starts to affect them all. On meeting Ashling and Ellen in Bolivia, Ray warns: "We are going to negotiate some of the worst and most dangerous terrain on the planet - it's going to be hardcore, you are going to be at altitude so it's not going to be for the faint hearted. It will be hellish at times" Ellen recalls crossing a makeshift wire bridge over a fast flowing river. "I had to figure out how to get across a little differently to everyone else," she explains. "Ray was not offering help too soon which was really reassuring to me because it meant that he believed I could do it. "When you are a person with a disability, everyone always expects you not to be able to do something or to always need help, and I don't like that narrative," she adds. "I can do anything that Ashling does, I just have to do it a little differently. I think that's a really important lesson for people to learn that it doesn't matter how something is done, as long as it is done at the end of the day, that's the most important thing." As well as the endurance factor, Uncharted with Ray Goggins is also about getting inside the head of the participants. Opening up around the campfire three nights into the trip, Ray questions Ashling about her anxiety. She's quite candid about her experience. She reveals: "I was constantly tipping away with the camogie but I had a fairly bad car accident and camogie was the thing that always kept my feet on the that was taken away, I completely lost control of my life." Ashling also points out that camogie later saved her, recalling: "Something clicked in my head . . . eventually I got called back up to the Cork squad and all of a sudden, my life completely changed." The pair form a strong bond throughout the trip, with Ellen telling Ashling: "I actually don't know what I would do without you, I'm glad that we are here together" Ashling compliments Ellen's mental strength as the expedition intensifies: "The resilience she shows, nothing can stop her, anything is possible when it comes to Ellen Keane and I love it," she says. On the fifth day the majestic peak of Huayna Potosi is revealed. This is the final, most brutal of challenge of them all. In two days, the group will need to traverse sheer ice walls, snow fields and mountain glaciers as they to attempt to summit the 6088 metre peak. It will be the toughest test of their lives.
