Martin Odegaard's Penalty Helps Arsenal Pip Newcastle United 3-2 In Friendly
Last Updated: Martin Odegaard's late penalty, won by Max Dowman, secured a 3-2 victory for Arsenal over Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in Singapore. Martin Odegaard scored a late penalty, won by Max Dowman, to secure a 3-2 victory over Newcastle in an intense pre-season friendly in Singapore on Sunday. Two quick goals in the first half initially turned the game in Arsenal's favour after Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early lead with a fortunate goal that bobbled beyond David Raya. Kai Havertz played a crucial role in both of Arsenal's goals. He set up Mikel Merino with a neat lay-off inside the area, before delivering a dangerous cross that Newcastle defender Alex Murphy inadvertently crashed into his own net. Newcastle equalised through a Jacob Murphy drive in the second half, but Odegaard scored from 12 yards late on to secure another pre-season win. How Arsenal Beat Newcastle United? The excitement was palpable even before the match began, as new signing Viktor Gyokeres was introduced to the overwhelmingly supportive Arsenal crowd, who vastly outnumbered the Newcastle fans. Despite the fervent support for Arsenal, Newcastle struck first. Sandro Tonali delivered a ball into the box that found Anthony Elanga, whose mishit shot wrong-footed David Raya, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead within the first five minutes. Arsenal responded with urgency. Havertz narrowly missed with a header, Trossard's shot was blocked, and Saka's runs on the right wing caused the Newcastle defence problems. Ben White then fired over the bar from a promising position, and Raya made an important save from Bruno Guimaraes before White cleared the rebound. Following the water break, Mikel Merino equalised with a well-executed one-two involving Havertz, finishing calmly into the bottom corner. Within a minute, Arsenal took the lead as Havertz's dangerous cross forced an own goal from Alex Murphy. Arteta introduced Odegaard after the break, and soon after, Kiwior replaced Calafiori. Newcastle responded with an equaliser through Jacob Murphy, whose low shot found the back of the net through a crowd of players. Max Dowman's introduction proved to be decisive. He immediately tested both Newcastle keepers with his sharp runs and close-range efforts. Eventually, Joelinton fouled him in the box, and Odegaard confidently converted the resulting penalty. What's Next For Arsenal? The final game of Arsenal's Asia Tour is on Thursday against Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium. The first-ever North London derby to be played outside of the UK will bring the curtain down on Arsenal's pre-season tour. view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 20:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Who is Pedro Fernández Sarmiento? Barcelona's 17-year-old scores in Vissel Kobe friendly
Barcelona's pre-season clash against Vissel Kobe gave fans a glimpse into the club's bright future — and leading that spotlight was 17-year-old Pedro Fernández, better known as 'Dro.' The young talent scored his first senior goal for the Catalan giants during the friendly held in Japan, making headlines and announcing himself as one of La Masia's most exciting prospects. Who is Pedro Fernández 'Dro'? Hailing from Nigran, Spain, Pedro Fernández began his footballing journey at the Val Minor School, where he trained for nearly a decade before joining Barcelona's prestigious La Masia academy. Even at the tender age of four, Dro displayed extraordinary talent, leaving a lasting impression on his coaches. Javi Roxo, one of his early mentors at Val Minor, recalled Dro's ability to make a difference in games, often pairing with teammate Pedro Villar to dominate youth matches. 'Dro made the difference from a young age as he did different things,' Roxo told SPORT , highlighting the youngster's unique flair and creativity. Upon joining La Masia, Dro continued to develop his skills, alternating between Barcelona's Juvenil B and Juvenil A teams last season. His performances caught the eye of Barcelona's senior team manager, Hansi Flick, who included him in first-team training sessions during the 2024-25 season and selected him for the 2025 Asia Tour. Dro's inclusion in the 30-man traveling squad for the Vissel Kobe friendly was a testament to his growing reputation within the club. Dro Scores in Barcelona's 3–1 Win Over Vissel Kobe Barcelona faced Vissel Kobe on July 27, 2025, at Noevir Stadium in Japan as part of their Asia tour. With several senior stars rested or sidelined, Flick gave youth players a chance to shine — and they didn't disappoint. Dro came off the bench in the second half and made the most of his opportunity. With the game still competitive, the 17-year-old found the back of the net late in the match, sealing a 3–1 victory for Barcelona. It was a composed finish that showcased not just his technical skill, but also his poise in high-pressure moments. His goal followed earlier strikes from Eric García and fellow young signing Roony Bardghji, who also impressed with a confident performance. By Isak makes it clear he wants out Alexander Isak has told Newcastle he wants to quit the club in a bombshell that could rock the Magpies' summer plans. The Swedish striker, 25, hasn't travelled with the squad for their pre-season tour of the Far East, with the club putting it down to a 'minor thigh injury.' But Mail Sport reports that reveal there's more to it with their sources saying Isak has informed the Toon hierarchy he wants to explore a move away from St James' Park. The £63million record signing is now at the centre of growing transfer speculation, with top clubs across Europe set to circle. Newcastle chiefs are aware of his stance but are likely to demand big money if they're to part ways with their star man. Copy link Copied By Ekitike in Hong Kong After his transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt was confirmed yesterday, Hugo Ekitike has landed in Hong Kong to join up with his new Liverpool squadmates. Copy link Copied By Fulham in for struggling Chelsea star Fulham have expressed interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer. The Englishman made the switch from Leicester to Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2024–25 season but has struggled for regular game time. A move to Craven Cottage could offer him a more prominent role. Fulham have explored both loan and permanent transfer possibilities. Dewsbury-Hall remains under contract with Chelsea until 2029. Copy link Copied By Isak drama continues as he's left out Newcastle United have confirmed their 30-man squad for the 2025 Asia Tour — but fans were quick to spot one big name missing from the list. Star striker Alexander Isak has been left out after picking up a ' minor thigh injury', the club revealed. It's a frustrating blow for boss Eddie Howe, with the Swedish hitman a key part of his plans going into the new season. Meanwhile, there's better news for Lewis Hall, who makes his return to the first-team fold after missing the second half of last season with a foot injury. The Magpies will hope to hit the ground running in Asia as they gear up for a crucial Premier League campaign — but they'll have to do it without their No9 for now. Copy link Copied By Zubimendi confirms Liverpool snub Martin Zubimendi has revealed he knocked back a move to Liverpool last year because the timing wasn't right. But now the Spanish midfield maestro reckons he's landed in the perfect spot under Mikel Arteta after sealing a £55million move to Arsenal from Real Sociedad this summer . The 25-year-old had the chance to join the Reds 12 months ago in a similar deal but chose to stay put in La Liga. He said: 'The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave and it wasn't the right time. "I felt La Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying was the best decision.' Copy link Copied By Premier League reveal latest fixture schedule changes for September The Premier League have confirmed September's televised fixtures. They include a mouthwatering Manchester derby, as well as While The first Merseyside derby of the season will take place at Anfield the following week, at 12:30pm on TNT Sports. Copy link Copied By Chelsea going in for Xavi Chelsea have thrashed out personal terms with wonderkid Xavi Simons and are lining up a big-money bid to get the deal DONE. The Times claim the Blues are ready to pounce for the Simons, who can play out wide or in the No10 role, still has two years left on his deal — worth a tidy £100k a week. But Copy link Copied By Calling time on United? This is the video that Barcelona posted to announce Rashford's arrival. The England forward will spend the 2025-26 season on loan in LaLiga - and the Catalan giants can make the deal permanent for £26m. Barcelona announce loan signing of Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford Copy link Copied By No Rash comments More from the big story of the day, then. And Marcus Rashford has refused to stick the boot in on his boyhood club after leaving on loan for the second time this year. On the state of the Red Devils, he said: 'The situation with United is the club is in a period of change and they have been for a while. 'So I don't have anything bad to say about Manchester United… 'I wish them all the best and hope they are successful in the future.' Copy link Copied By Rod for his back Real Madrid are ready to make a £100m bid to lure Manchester City star Rodri to the Bernabeu this summer. New Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has targeted the Spain midfielder as his priority after Real were destroyed by PSG in their Club World Cup semi-final earlier this month. And while City chief Pep Guardiola will be reluctant to lose the midfield fulcrum whose absence for most of last season was a huge factor in his side surrendering their Prem crown, Madrid believe the Etihad outfit might be tempted by a mega-bid. Rodri, 29, was out from September until the last week of the season after suffering major ACL and meniscus injuries in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. He made one start and three appearances off the bench in the Club World Cup but only lasted 37 minutes after his arrival as City were shocked by Al Hilal in the last 16 before suffering a fresh problem. Uncertainty over his true physical condition is one element that might persuade Real to wait and see, with his City contract due to expire in 2027. That would allow the Bernabeu club to fully assess his physical condition over the course of the next 12 months, with that City deal running down and his asking price likely to drop significantly as well. But Alonso is understood to be pushing the Madrid hierarchy to tempt City with a bid for the 29-year-old now, knowing that the Etihad side would be likely to be keen to tie Rodri to a long-term extension if his fitness holds up. Real feel that former Atletico star Rodri, who was born in the Spanish capital and moved to the Prem in a £62.8m deal six years ago, would be open to a return 'home'. Copy link Copied By Sim swap Chelsea are closing in on a sensational swoop for Xavi Simons - but one star could move the other way. The Blues can use the £52m from selling Noni Madueke to Arsenal to land Simons from RB Leipzig for £60m. Personal terms are thought to be close and the 22-year-old would be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea have made Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers their top target and could decide to pursue him instead. Meanwhile Carney Chukwuemeka could move the other way with the Blues and Leipzig holding talks about both players. Copy link Copied By More from Rashford On his style of play, Rashford added: 'I always try to make decisive actions and fast dynamic plays and I've always been a fan of watching Barca play from my young days. 'It's going to be a joy for me to play here and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it. 'I'm full of excitement and hunger to go out and try and help this team win. I can see the ambition of the club is to do better than last year and for a player that's what you want to hear because it keeps you improving year on year and that's what you need to be the best version of yourself.' On new boss Hansi Flick, he said: '[He was] Another key factor of the reason I'm here. The conversations I had with him were very positive and what he did last season was terrific. 'But in his career he's proved he's one of the top coaches. To lead such a young team to a very successful season and to come back in pre-season and do more, it shows me everything I thought about the club. 'Like I said, I'm eager to get going and keep learning the Barcelona way and be ready for the games.' Copy link Copied By Pick up the phone Rashford was unveiled with a social media video of him in a British red telephone box. Then discussing his loan move to Barcelona, he said: 'I'm very excited. "It's a club where people's dreams come true, they win big prizes and what the club stands for means a lot to me as well so it feels like I'm at home and this is a big factor in my choice to come here because it's a family club and you know people are comfortable here and it's a good place for good players to showcase their skills.' Copy link Copied By Hall to play for... Fulham? Fulham are keen on Chelsea's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The Cottagers are preparing an approach to take the midfielder on loan with a view to a permanent move. Dewsbury-Hall, 26, has struggled for Premier League minutes following a £30million move from Leicester last summer. Fulham also remain in talks with Arsenal over a move for Reiss Nelson, who came off the bench against AC Milan in the Gunners' Singapore friendly. Copy link Copied By Oh Mo! Bryan Mbeumo's £71m move to United may actually give City a boost. That is because the Etihad giants reportedly bank £6.5m from the sale by Brentford. Mbeumo previously played at French side Troyes, who are owned by City's parent company the City Football Group (CFG). Brentford paid £5.8m to sign Mbeumo in 2019, while also including a ten per cent sell-on fee. It means that CFG have banked £6.5m from his move to Old Trafford. Copy link Copied By Out of the Blues Atletico Madrid are closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea defender Renato Veiga. The Blues are ready to sell the Portuguese, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Juventus. Chelsea want around £35million for the man who arrived from Basel for £11.7m last summer. Atletico, however, are trying to negotiate the Blues down to £25m. Veiga, who made 18 Chelsea appearances last season, has made it clear he wants to make the move to Madrid. Copy link Copied By Going to go Fer Evan Ferguson wants to take Roma into the Champions League after joining from Brighton. The Irish striker, 20, has joined the Italian side on loan for a season with a view to a £33million move next summer. Ferguson has struggled for form and fitness in recent years and failed to score after joining West Ham on loan for the second half of last season. He said: 'When you have a club like Roma, one of the biggest in Europe, interested, it's hard to turn down, and especially when you feel like they want you to come here and explain how good it could be for you, your career and the club. 'For me it's a good opportunity. Obviously it's a big club and we want to finish as high as we can. 'When I came in we were talking about sort of Champions League targets and getting back up there so I think that's the expectation for this season.' Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinian is also in Italy ahead of a £17.5m move to join Serie A giants AC Milan. The 27-year-old joined the Seagulls from Villarreal in 2022 and will sign a five-year deal in Milan. Copy link Copied By Digging for Doug SunSport can exclusively reveal Everton and West Ham are set to battle it out for Douglas Luiz. The midfielder wants to return to the Premier League. The ex-Aston Villa star, 27, is top of David Moyes' list as he aims to land a marquee name ahead of the Toffees' move to their new stadium. But Graham Potter is also tracking the Juventus player, who has failed to settle in Italy and wants to quit the Serie A giants. Villa are believed to have an option to re-sign the player but aren't interested in sanctioning a fairytale return, while talks on a swap which would see Jadon Sancho join Juve and Luiz head to Manchester United appear to have cooled. Everton and West Ham to fight it out for Douglas Luiz Copy link Copied By Liverpool land Ekitike Another big deal is DONE. Liverpool have confirmed they have agreed a deal with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign Hugo Ekitike. The striker arrives at Anfield having completed a medical and agreed personal terms - and will link up with his new team-mates in Hong Kong once he gets international clearance. The Frenchman, 23, costs Liverpool £79m. Copy link Copied By Xhak attack Erik ten Hag may block Granit Xhaka's move to Sunderland. The ex-Arsenal captain looked set to make a Premier League return to the Stadium of Light. But the new Bayer Leverkusen boss might scupper the deal. Ten Hag said: 'His agent can say whatever he wants, but this club has already let three important players go, and we won't let any more go. 'Granit is a leader and still has three years left on his contract here. 'It's clear – Granit is a key player, he signed here for five years and still has three years left on his contract. He's too important to us to let him go.' Copy link Copied By BREAKING - Liverpool confirm Hugo Ekitike signing Arne Slot finally has his man with the Reds confirming the signing of the Frankfurt forward. Ekitike, 23, has successfully completed a medical and agreed personal terms - he arrives on a deal worth £79million. He will fly out to Hong Kong to join his new team-mates on their pre-season tour of Asia later this week. Ekitike - who will find out his squad number later this summer - scored 26 goals in 64 appearances in his two seasons in Germany. He was also named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season last year. Copy link Copied By More from Lineker Lineker added: "He's going to a place with brilliant players where it would be difficult to play regularly, but there are a lot of games, and even though Barça has three forwards like Raphinha, Lewandowski and Yamal, you can't expect to play every game from start to finish. "It's a good signing for Barcelona. If Marcus arrives at his best, it's incredible. He was already fantastic at Aston Villa and he can do so at Barcelona. I hope that's the case." Copy link Copied By Marc his words Gary Lineker backed Marcus Rashford to be a "success" at Barcelona. And part of that is due to the troublesome culture at Old Trafford. Barcelona will cover 100 per cent of Rashford's massive £325,000-a-week wages in the 2025-26 campaign. He will be the first England international to wear Barcelona colours since Lineker, who played there between for three years between 1986 and 1989. Lineker told : "I suspect Marcus will do well. "What's happened to the players who have left Manchester? The players who have left are pushing hard, they've done incredibly well everywhere. "So there's something wrong with United at the moment, and the players who have left have generally been successful. "Rashford seems to be arriving in the right frame of mind, this is a great challenge for him." Copy link Copied By Gyokeres on his way to London Viktor Gyokeres is said to be on his way to London for a medical. Personal terms are agreed for his transfer from Sporting to Arsenal. Flek finalizes 26 man Asia tour squad with surprising omissions ahead of 2025 /26 season Big Names at Risk: Barcelona's Preseason Squad Exclusions Revealed! Barcelona boss Hansi Flick's made some tough decisions ahead of the club's preseason tour of Asia as several senior players are expected to miss out. Asia Tour Plans Underway Barca're set to travel to Japan & South Korea this week for series of friendlies in preparation for the 2025 /26 campaign which they hope will bring more silverware after last season's domestic treble: La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super cup. Ter Stegen Could Miss Out Top of the list's goalkeeper ter Stegen who's still struggling with back injury and may require another surgery putting his tour participation in serious doubt. Other Players Facing the Axe Oriol Romeu & Pau Victor are reportedly not part of Flick's vision with the club seeking loan or permanent exits this summer. Andreas Christensen remains uncertain. While he wishes to stay, the board may opt to cash in potentially ruling him out of the trip. Backup keeper Inaki Pena, alongside Dani Rodriguez & Toni Fernandez are also expected to be left out despite decent preseason showings.
