"Assam's 15 districts have become Muslim-majority": Deputy Speaker Numal Momin
Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 15 (ANI): Amidst discussions on demographic changes in many Hindu-populated constituencies in the state, Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin has claimed that 15 districts of the state have become Muslim-majority. He alleged that the Congress's motto, motive and vision were to make Assam an Islamic state. 'As of now, 15 districts have become Muslim majority. At the time of independence, there was not a single district with a Muslim majority. It is a very alarming situation in Assam,' Momin told ANI in an interview. 'Very scientifically and tactically, infiltration is going on from Lower Assam to Middle Assam and Upper Assam. When I was a child, in that time, my neighbouring district, Golaghat, an area called Sarupathar, had only 60-70 Muslim houses. Now the figure has gone upto 6000-7000 households. This simple example is very much evidence that Muslims are migrating slowly from Lower Assam to Middle Assam and Upper Assam. It is not only demographic changes, but also a serious threat to the Indigenous Assamese people in Assam,' he added. He said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed his concern about the matter. Not only is it a matter of concern for the Chief Minister, but it is also a matter of concern for every Assamese and Indigenous people. Now it is high time to act against that conspiracy under which scientifically and tactically destroying the Assamese people, culture and its heritage, Momin said. He praised the chief minister for the eviction drive. However, he said that more eviction is required. 'The people who are living in that particular area they grabbed the lands, and tactically, they are buying the lands from Indigenous people. The Indigenous people don't want to sell, but because of the atrocities committed by those people. Out of fear, the Indigenous people sold their lands and ran away from that area,' he said. 'Now the BJP government is strongly advocating the protection of Indigenous people. The Indigenous people are getting security under this government. Further, we need to take more action so that Assam can be saved from the infiltrators, invaders, and Assam can be peaceful and prosper politically, economically, and educationally. The Assam Chief Minister has started the movement, and those who love Assam should support this. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is the answer to the burning issues of Assam,' the Deputy Speaker added. Criticising the Congress party, he said that, during the Congress period, not a single eviction drive was carried out. 'The Satras land, religious places, lands which doubtful citizens occupied. At that time, the Congress government was there, but they never took action against them. That directly indicates that the Congress is involved in and encouraging these activities by doubtful citizens. We have the evidence that the Congress is supporting the fundamental groups like Jamiyat and AAMSU. Because one of the MLAs of Congress openly said that, if Congress don't do these activities directly, they will give financial help to do those activities through AAMSU and Jamiyat,' he said. 'That means the Congress is directly involved. They are doing this for what, to kill the Indigenous people, destroy our culture and heritage, to grab the lands of Satras, religious places. I have enough evidence of what the Congress MLA said; they are financially helping AAMSU and Jamiyat. AAMSU is vocal against the Indigenous people of Assam, and they want to infiltrate more and more Bangladeshis, so that one day they can become the majority and have their own Chief Minister. But their dream will never come true. We, the Assamese people, will fight and protect the Indigenous people,' Momin added. He also said that, actually, earlier, the future of Indigenous people was totally bleak, and they were in a very dark position. After the BJP government come, they understand who is the enemy of Indigenous people. 'After 2016, under the BJP government, more than 12 lakh Indigenous people got land pattas, land rights. But during the Congress time, they didn't provide land pattas to the Indigenous people so that immigrant people would come and grab their lands. Now we have provided the land pattas to the Indigenous people. Their (Congress's) motto, motive and vision were to destroy Assam and make Assam an Islamic state. Now the BJP government has foiled their dream. The Indigenous people are very much comfortable in Assam,' Momin said. (ANI)

"Nothing wrong": Assam LoP Saikia on Congress distributing sanitary pad packets with pictures of Rahul Gandhi
Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 5 (ANI): The Leader of Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Saturday justified the move to put pictures of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the packets of sanitary pads, which they are distributing as a part of a welfare scheme. Speaking to ANI, Saikia mentioned that there is nothing wrong with putting pictures on such good initiatives. 'Distributing 5 lakh sanitary pads is just the beginning, and such welfare schemes should be taken up. We have placed the picture of Rahul Gandhi, but there is no reason for the BJP to get angry. Even on tobacco, there are images of celebrities in advertisements. And if, for such a good thing, we are putting up the picture of our leader, then what is the problem?' Saikia asked. Congress had earlier announced the launch of a sanitary pad distribution drive in Bihar. The box has pictures of Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Speaking on the initiative, All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba claimed that a survey was carried out by her party, in which it was revealed that women in Bihar are still using cloth during menstruation. 'We conducted a survey in Bihar, and shocking figures came out that in today's modern India, women and daughters of Bihar are using cloth during menstruation and are falling prey to serious diseases. Mahila Congress has taken the initiative to give free sanitary vending machines to our mothers, sisters, daughters of Bihar who are using cloth due to unemployment, inflation, poverty and are unable to buy it,' Lamba said. 'We installed machines, gave free training, free machines, free raw material to make 30,000 pads. And today, I am happy to say that the women of Bihar are making these pads; they are getting work and earning a living. We are going to distribute free sanitary pad boxes in the next 2 days,' she added. Earlier, Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Monday said that if the INDIA bloc comes to power in Bihar after the upcoming assembly elections, it will implement Rajasthan's health model in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Patna, Gehlot said, 'The health model we have created in Rajasthan cannot be compared to any other in the entire country. We have also enacted the 'Right to Health' law in Rajasthan, under which every family has been provided with insurance coverage. The Government of India's Ayushman Bharat scheme benefits only a select few, whereas Rajasthan is the only state where we have provided coverage to the entire population of the state.' Bihar elections are expected to be held later this year, in October or November; however, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not announced an official date. (ANI)

Assam mulls giving District Commissioners power to approve Aadhaar for applicants over 18
Assam is considering a policy that would give District Commissioners the power to approve or reject Aadhaar applications from individuals over 18, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said following a state Cabinet meeting on Friday. 'We are pushing 15, 20, 30 people back from Assam every day. But it is not like the police are able to catch all of them (alleged illegal immigrants). Today, we had a discussion in the Cabinet that Aadhaar has been in Assam for many years. There is hardly any need for adults to apply for Aadhaar cards now because most of them have already been issued. Now, only children and newborns have to be given Aadhaar cards. We will discuss further and come up with a law for Assam that if adults seek Aadhaar, only District Commissioners will be able to give it to them; no one else will be able to give. As a result, fresh people coming from Bangladesh will not be able to take them,' he said. The development comes against the backdrop of a renewed push against alleged illegal immigration from Bangladesh. This has included the detention and 'pushbacks' into Bangladesh of hundreds of people declared to be foreigners by the state's Foreigners' Tribunals. In a special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly earlier this month, Sarma stated that over 300 people had been 'pushed back' in this manner. On Friday, he confirmed that this process remains underway, noting that another 20 people were 'pushed back' on Thursday night. 'Earlier, Aadhaar was given in Aadhaar centres or SDC offices. Now, till the DC himself does not look, the path to getting Aadhaar will be closed,' he said. Sarma said this issue is still under discussion and that a formal decision will be taken at a future cabinet meeting. He said that the state government is also looking to 'tighten' the process of obtaining delayed birth registration. In a reference to the directions for the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, he said, 'Even to be included in voter lists this time, gradually, birth certificates will be required. That's why we want to make the issuing of birth certificates also tighter… Even cases of availing backdated birth certificates will also go to DCs.' Sarma has frequently expressed concerns over 'suspected foreigners' availing Aadhaar cards in the state. Last year, the Assam cabinet issued a standard operating procedure to link Aadhaar cards to the National Register of Citizens, making it mandatory for one to furnish their NRC application number, which had been provided to them while applying in 2015.

Halt Goalpara eviction, give land to affected: Cong to CM
1 2 3 4 5 6 Guwahati: Senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia, wrote to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma , urging him to stay the eviction in Goalpara and to provide alternate land to those evicted and those yet to be evicted. A total of 667 families were evicted for allegedly encroaching over 600 bighas of land at Hasilabeel village under Balijana revenue circle in lower Assam's Goalpara district. The families mostly belong to the Bengali-speaking Muslim community, officials said. Saikia urged the CM to direct the Goalpara district commissioner not to evict the people until the CM meets with the people of the village on June 18. "We have already stated that we will cooperate with the govt to free the land from encroachers, subject to compliance with various guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, and also laws and rules enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly for eviction of landless people and rehabilitation, in case they are evicted from govt land, Khas land, reserve land, etc," he added. He said it was apparent that the people occupying the land in question were living there as they had no alternative land to build their houses and provide shelter to their families. He also directed a Congress delegation, led by chief whip of the party in the Assembly Wazed Ali Choudhury, to visit the eviction site at the earliest and submit a memorandum to the governor, urging him to ensure fair practice and extend all help for rehabilitation, in case eviction of citizens is carried out from the presently occupied land by the govt as per rules. On the other hand, an eight-member Congress delegation was stopped by Assam Police and local authorities from visiting the eviction site. Police put up barricades at Hashila Beel in Goalpara to stop the Congress MLAs from proceeding.
