Atascadero reveals its brand-new downtown. ‘This is what we've been waiting for'

After a year of construction on the city's main drag, downtown Atascadero has a whole new look. Just in time for summer, residents can now enjoy a fully renovated El Camino Real with added car and bike parking, lush greenery and trees, hanging street lights, a center road divider, pedestrian cross walks and other safe and sustainable features. The renovations span the main drag of El Camino Real from Rosario Avenue to Highway 41. 'This isn't a thoroughfare anymore,' city manager Jim Lewis told reporters. 'This is the center of downtown.' The city celebrated the completion of its downtown safety, parking and beautification efforts on Friday with a city-wide block party. The event kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. followed by an evening of live music, disco ball scavenger hunts and dance performances in the streets. Local businesses kept their doors open later than usual to accommodate customers into the night. 'Atascadero really is the genuine, authentic community in our county,' Lewis said. 'Atascadero is the living room for our county. We're not pretentious, we're not overrun by visitors, and we have free parking. And so this is just the icing on the cake of why we want local people to hang out here in Atascadero. And I think this is what we've been waiting for.' Atascadero is in middle of massive downtown renovation. But is construction slowing business? With construction on the El Camino Real Downtown Safety and Parking Enhancement Project commencing last June, the $12 million public works project clocked in on time and on budget. Much of the project's funding came from state and federal grants, as well as contributions from the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments. The project added nearly 130 new free parking spots to downtown and safe crosswalks at the city's most risky intersections on El Camino Real. The bulk of the work was completed by Friday, with only some landscaping, sidewalk paving and streetlamp installation still to be done in downtown north of Traffic Way in the coming weeks. Two grand entry arches resembling the original city sign, which was blue with neon white letters, will be installed on either end of the new downtown center in the fall.

After 70 years, Charles Paddock Zoo has a new name. What to know

After 70 years, the Charles Paddock Zoo has unveiled a new name, logo and brand identity. To mark the zoo's birthday, the Charles Paddock Zoo has been renamed to the Central Coast Zoo, according to a Friday news release. The rebranding effort included discussion by the City Council, city staff, the Friends of the Charles Paddock Zoo, TJA Advertising Agency, local tourism agencies and community members, the release said. After deliberation the 'Central Coast Zoo' was the fan-favorite. The zoo's updated logo keeps the iconic oak tree, but has a new font and color palette. A children's activity book is included in the brand refresh, for the zoo to enhance its education efforts at camps, local schools and other academic pursuits, according to the release. To honor its origins, the zoo's entrance will be named Charles Paddock Plaza, with a bronze statue of founder Charles Paddock and his beloved opposum, Cosmo Topper, the first animal he cared for, the release said. The Central Coast Zoo recently earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for another five years, an honor held by only 10% of zoos worldwide, the release said. The zoo is also launching 'Zoo 2.0,' a marketing initiative to promote environmental awareness, sustainable practices and enhance the zoo's visibility in Atascadero. The Central Coast Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, and is located at 9100 Morro Road in Atascadero.

SloDoCo is closing shop in one local city — but opening in another

Popular San Luis Obispo County doughnut chain SloDoCo is closing the doors of its Atascadero location, but North County fans won't be without their sweet treats for long. According to a notice posted on the door at 6917 El Camino Real, the Atascadero shop's last day in business will be Sunday. 'We are deeply grateful for your support and loyalty over the years,' the notice read. 'It has been a pleasure serving you, and we hope to continue doing so at all of our other locations.' The Atascadero spot, which opened in 2019, was the popular local chain's first expansion from its original location in San Luis Obispo. The doughnut chain is known for its eclectic offering of unique flavors and colorful, cheeky designs that made the shop a viral sensation way back in 2017. It has since grown to encompass two locations in San Luis Obispo — one, its flagship on Foothill Boulevard, the other, the converted former Sunshine Donuts on Higuera Street — and its newest shop in Goleta. The Santa Barbara County spot, the first SloDoCo outside of SLO County, opened in November 2024. The sign posted in the window of the closing shop also alluded to the chain's new location, expected to open at 2110 Spring St. in Paso Robles. When reached for comment by The Tribune, a SloDoCo representative said the business did not yet have a set opening day for the new location, but it was 'in the finishing stages of renovation of the building, so it will be very soon!' 'Hopefully within the next few weeks,' the spokesperson said. They did not provide a reason for the Atascadero's store's closing.
