SloDoCo is closing shop in one local city — but opening in another

Yahoo09-05-2025
Popular San Luis Obispo County doughnut chain SloDoCo is closing the doors of its Atascadero location, but North County fans won't be without their sweet treats for long.
According to a notice posted on the door at 6917 El Camino Real, the Atascadero shop's last day in business will be Sunday.
'We are deeply grateful for your support and loyalty over the years,' the notice read. 'It has been a pleasure serving you, and we hope to continue doing so at all of our other locations.'
The Atascadero spot, which opened in 2019, was the popular local chain's first expansion from its original location in San Luis Obispo.
The doughnut chain is known for its eclectic offering of unique flavors and colorful, cheeky designs that made the shop a viral sensation way back in 2017.
It has since grown to encompass two locations in San Luis Obispo — one, its flagship on Foothill Boulevard, the other, the converted former Sunshine Donuts on Higuera Street — and its newest shop in Goleta.
The Santa Barbara County spot, the first SloDoCo outside of SLO County, opened in November 2024.
The sign posted in the window of the closing shop also alluded to the chain's new location, expected to open at 2110 Spring St. in Paso Robles.
When reached for comment by The Tribune, a SloDoCo representative said the business did not yet have a set opening day for the new location, but it was 'in the finishing stages of renovation of the building, so it will be very soon!'
'Hopefully within the next few weeks,' the spokesperson said.
They did not provide a reason for the Atascadero's store's closing.

Apple Reportedly Working on a ChatGPT-Like Search Experience

Apple is internally working on a "ChatGPT-like search experience" to instantly generate answers for users, according to a report from Bloomberg on Sunday. The Answers, Knowledge and Information team, or AKI, is a team within Apple looking to make internal AI products for its devices. The company is reportedly building an "answer engine" -- an AI-powered service that pulls from information online to answer general queries. It's also possible that a separate app might be developed. This AI search could power Siri, Spotlight and Safari. A representative for Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. With companies like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI all investing billions in AI development, Apple has notably been absent from the race. Instead of rushing to build AI models that could power the next generation of Siri, Apple opted to partner with OpenAI and leverage its technology. With the launch of the iPhone 16, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, AI on the iPhone that could assist in text generation, photo editing and summarization. The implementation, however, felt half-baked to many, and the rollout was slow. Apple's place in the AI race Reports surfaced earlier this year that Apple was looking to purchase Perplexity, an AI company that's taking on Google with an AI-powered search engine. Adding Perplexity to Apple's portfolio would certainly help propel the company in the AI race. It would also lessen its reliance on Google. Currently, Apple has a lucrative $20 billion per year deal with Google to allow it to be the default search engine on Apple devices. That's also why Apple hasn't built its own competing search engine -- although, Apple argues that even if the deal didn't exist, we can't assume it'd have made a competing search engine. That deal is now on shaky ground after the Department of Justice's antitrust division sued Google and won, declaring the company is maintaining an illegal monopoly in online search. As a judge weighs remedies in this case, Apple has been barred from participating in the case, meaning Apple could lose $12.5 billion in annual revenue if the DOJ forces how Google makes these deals. Creating a new AI-powered search engine within Apple might unwind the strands between Google and the iPhone maker, but could lead to more competition in the online search and AI markets.

OpenAI says ChatGPT shouldn't tell you to break up with someone

OpenAI said it rolled back an earlier update of ChatGPT, which made it "too agreeable." The company also said it has worked with health professionals to ensure ChatGPT is responding appropriately. OpenAI said it won't measure success "by time spent or clicks." OpenAI wants ChatGPT to help you solve life's problems — just not your relationship status. On Monday, OpenAI announced a series of changes it's rolling out to ChatGPT to better support users during difficult times and to reflect medical expertise. "When you ask something like 'Should I break up with my boyfriend?' ChatGPT shouldn't give you an answer," the company said in a statement about the changes. "It should help you think it through—asking questions, weighing pros and cons. New behavior for high-stakes personal decisions is rolling out soon." Among the changes, OpenAI said it rolled back an earlier update that made ChatGPT "too agreeable." Starting on Monday, ChatGPT will also begin to prompt users with "gentle reminders" during long sessions. "We'll keep tuning when and how they show up so they feel natural and helpful," the company said. OpenAI said it will form an advisory group comprised of experts in mental health, youth development, and human-computer interaction. The company said it also worked with over 90 physicians across over 30 to ensure ChatGPT responds appropriately when a user shows signs of emotional distress. OpenAI says it wants its flagship model, which the company said earlier on Monday is on track to reach 700 million weekly active users, to ensure it "genuinely" helps users rather than just holding their attention. "Instead of measuring success by time spent or clicks, we care more about whether you leave the product having done what you came for," it said.
