Georgia baseball's final ranking after disappointing end to year

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team ended the 2025 season with their lowest ranking all season in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll. Georgia dropped nine spots to No. 15 in the poll after being eliminated following losses to Duke and Oklahoma State in the Athens Regional. For a second straight season, Georgia earned a top eight national seed, but was unable to make it to the College World Series. The Bulldogs undoubtedly had an impressive season in the SEC, but they went 0-2 against Power Four competition in the NCAA Tournament and are now looking to rebuild ahead of the 2026 season. Just two SEC teams advanced to the College World Series, but the LSU Tigers, who are ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll took home the national championship. The last six national champions dating back to 2019 have all been SEC teams (no national champion was named in 2020). Georgia figures to bounce back in 2026. The Bulldogs finished the 2025 season with a 43-17 record, but disappointed in the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Georgia pitcher Kolten Smith recently became the latest Dawg to enter the transfer portal. Georgia currently has On3's No. 43 ranked transfer class. One day after losing to Murray State in the Durham Super Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament, Duke baseball is losing its coach to an ACC rival. Virginia announced the hiring of Chris Pollard on Tuesday, stealing the coach away from their ACC rival. Pollard coached Duke for the last 12 seasons and guided the program to four NCAA super regional appearances. Pollard led the Blue Devils to a 41-21 record during the 2025 season. While they did not earn a national seed, Duke went into the Athens Regional and knocked out No. 7 Georgia to earn a home super regional after Murray State upset No. 10 Ole Miss in the Oxford Regional. However, Murray State pulled off 19-9 and 5-4 wins on June 8 and 9, respectively, to advance instead. With 357 career wins with Duke, Pollard departs as the all-time wins leader with the Blue Devils. He led the program to seven regionals and four super regionals. Pollard helped guide the program to its first regional since 1961 in 2016. The program won its first-ever regional in 2018. Virginia's coaching job came open when 22-year coach Brian O'Connor left for the coaching position with Mississippi State on June 1. O'Connor led the Cavaliers to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven CWS trips. Virginia won the 2015 CWS national championship. The Cavaliers went 32-18 overall and 16-11 in ACC play in 2025. Longtime Duke assistant Josh Jordan is viewed as the favorite to replace Pollard, according to D1 Baseball's Kendall Rogers.

Murray State etched its name in the college baseball record books on Monday. The Racers, who fell in Game 1 of the Durham Super Regional to Duke on Saturday, June 7, rallied to win Games 2 and 3 on June 8 and June 9 respectively, to advance to the College World Series, becoming the fourth No. 4 seed to ever punch a ticket to Omaha. Murray State won the Oxford Regional over No. 10 Ole Miss before taking on Duke, which won the Athens Regional vs. No. 7 Georgia. Here's a look at the other No. 4 seeds to reach the College World Series, and how they fared in the tournament: No. 4 seeds to reach CWS Murray State became the fourth No. 4 seed to ever reach the College World Series on June 9. No. 4 seeds were added to the NCAA tournament when the field expanded to 64 teams in 1999. The Racers join Oral Roberts (2023), Stony Brook (2012) and Fresno State (2008) as No. 4 seeds to reach Omaha, Nebraska. Fresno State is the lone No. 4 seed to ever win the national championship. Here's a look at how each No. 4 seed fared at the CWS: No. 4 seed records at CWS Oral Roberts Oral Roberts went 52-14 in 2023, winning the Summit League tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament. It defeated Oklahoma State in the Stillwater Regional and Oregon in the Eugene Super Regional to reach the CWS. The Golden Eagles won their opening game of the CWS against TCU, advancing to the winner's bracket. However, Oral Roberts then dropped its next two games, falling to Florida and then TCU in a loser's bracket grudge match. Stony Brook Stony Brook had quite the run in 2012, defeating Miami in the Coral Gables Regional before upsetting No. 7 LSU in the Baton Rouge Super Regional to reach the College World Series. Like Murray State, Stony Brook dropped Game 1 of the super regional series before winning back-to-back games to take the series. The Seawolves ran out of gas in Omaha, however, falling to UCLA 9-1 in the first round before losing again to Florida State 12-2 in an elimination game. Fresno State Fresno State started the season ranked No. 21 in the preseason polls, but quickly didn't live up to expectations before winning the WAC tournament to earn an NCAA tournament bid. The Bulldogs faced adversity in the Long Beach Regional, reaching the winner's bracket before losing to San Diego 15-1 in Game 1 of the regional final. Fresno State then won the if-necessary game of the regional 5-1 to advance. Fresno State lost Game 1 of the Tempe Super Regional to Arizona State, before winning back-to-back games against the Sun Devils on the road to reach the CWS. It later took Fresno State three games to win the national championship series, as well, as the Bulldogs faced elimination four times in the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs beat Rice 17-5 and North Carolina 5-3 to reach the semifinals, where they lost to North Carolina 4-3 before winning 6-1 to make the national championship series. They then lost Game 1 of the series 7-6 before beating Georgia 19-10 and 6-1 in back-to-back games to win their first and only national title in program history. Murray State enters the College World Series having played three games facing elimination, including back-to-back super regional games against Duke. The Racers will try to duplicate Fresno State's historic 2008 run in their first CWS appearance this season.

Murray State jumps on Ole Miss, holds on to win Oxford Regional 12-11 for 1st super regional berth

Associated Press OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Luke Mistone and Will Vierling had four hits apiece in Murray State's 19-hit attack and the Racers won the Oxford Regional by holding off 15th-seeded Ole Miss 12-11 on Monday night to make their first super regional. The Racers (42-14) advance to the Durham Super Regional against unseeded Duke, which won the Athens Regional. Murray State is the third straight Missouri Valley Conference team to make the second weekend after Indiana State (2023) and Evansville (2024). Mistone and Vierling both went 4 for 5 and Carson Garner and Dom Decker both had three hits as the Racers shocked the team that pounded them 19-8 on Sunday night by opening a 12-3 lead in the seventh inning. Ole Miss (43-21) used a single, a hit batter and three straight walks to turn the game around. Luke Hill had a two-run single and Will Furniss another single to make it 12-8. Graham Kelham got two strikeouts to end the inning. A video review was used to overturn a hit batter that would have loaded the bases with one out. Brayden Randle hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the eighth to make it a one-run game. Kelham allowed two more singles before getting out of the inning and then had a perfect ninth. He gave up six hits in 2 2/3 innings but struck out six to get his seventh save. Nic Schutte (8-3), who started in the Racers' 9-6 win over the Rebels on Friday, got the win in relief. Walker Hooks (1-2), the first of six Ole Miss pitchers, gave up eight hits and five runs in 2 1/3 innings in the loss. recommended in this topic
