SOCCER ROUNDUP: Cavalry continue hot run; Wild lose in Ottawa
Article content Cavalry FC is now 10 straight games without a loss and counting. Article content The reschedule match — postponed from a day earlier when a storm ravaged Calgary — saw continued dominance by the home side to push it further up the table in the 2025 Canadian Premier League campaign. Article content 'Confidence was high — we're a good squad,' said Cavalry forward Ali Musse, in the moments after Sunday's victory. 'We came prepared for this game, and I thought we did what we wanted to do. Article content Article content The decision lifts Cavalry closer to top spot in the CPL. Article content Its 6W-2L-3D record is good enough for third place with 21 points, four back of league-leading Atlético Ottawa (7-1-4) and two behind of second-runner Forge FC (6-0-5). Article content 'We're still hungry — I think we're still building,' Musse said. 'Obviously, it's good that we haven't lost (in 10 games). We're in good form right now, but we're still hungry.' Article content It was clean-sheet by superstar goalkeeper Marco Carducci and an early goal from Musse that decided the match on the scoreboard. Article content Musse's 13th-minute marker was a beauty, as he took a long-range pass into the penalty area from teammate Sergio Camargo off his chest and chipped the ball in on the half-volley with the outside of his left foot. Article content Deft, to be sure. Article content 'I made the run (into the box), and Sergio played an amazing ball in,' Musse said. 'The rest of it … I just went for it.' Article content Article content 'What we've got to do is to dislodge their block is move them from one side to the other and to other, so that the pieces start coming out,' added Cavalry gaffer Tommy Wheeldon Jr., recalling the goal. 'And what Sergio did quite well once we moved the ball to his side is recognized a gap between (defenders) for Musse coming in the other side. Article content 'It was a great pass, and Musse did brilliant to control it and finish it.' Article content It was his fifth goal of the CPL season, tied for the team-high with Tobias Warschewski. Article content At the other end, Carducci wasn't busy but was sharp when called upon, jumping high to grab a couple of would-be goals by the visitors on a few occasions. For the Cavalry captain, it was his fourth clean-sheet in 11 contests.

Calgary's Elva scores his first goal for hometown club, but Cavalry fall to Ottawa
Calgary's own Caniggia Elva counted his first goal ever for his home-town soccer side in Canadian Premier League action. Article content That was the good Saturday at ATCO Field. Article content The rest, however, was bad for Cavalry FC — a 3-1 loss to visiting Atlético Ottawa in disappointing fashion to keep the local footie heroes winless to start the 2025 CPL season. Article content Good, bad and … yeah … a continued ugly opining to the campaign, for sure. Article content Article content 'It might take a little bit of time,' said frustrated GM/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., when asked to dissect the decision that dropped his Cavalry to 0W-2L-1D. Article content Article content 'We're not used to losing at home. That's only our third loss in three seasons at Spruce Meadows.' Article content This one came because of early missed chances that weren't converted, although give credit to Ottawa goalkeeper Nathan Ingham for an outstanding afternoon. Article content But it didn't stay that way for long, as in the second half, Cavalry defender Bradley Kamdem Fewo factored into the bottom line — and not in a good way. First, a ball hit by Gabriel Mendes Antinoro glanced off his shoulder to fool Cavalry goalie Marco Carducci in the 59th minute. Article content Article content Then Kamdem put an elbow into Atleti foe Sergei Kozlowvkiy and was shown a red card, and shortly after, the visitors notched another goal — Ballou Tabla in the 66th minute on another ball that easily evaded Carducci. Article content 'I think it's one that got away,' Wheeldon said. 'They scored on their chances, and we didn't score on ours.'
