SpaceX launches Axiom Space crew from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida
A rocket launch lit up the night sky on the Space Coast as it sent a crew of four astronauts to orbit aboard a brand new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. After multiple delays ranging from rocket issues to a leak on the International Space Station, the Axiom Space Mission 4 was finally off the ground. The crew had been in quarantine ahead of launch since May 25. The liftoff finally came at 2:31 a.m. June 25 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center pad 39A. The Falcon 9 rocket's first stage, also known as the booster, came in for a landing at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, creating a sonic boom heard throughout Brevard. Commanding this mission is former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, a record-breaking space flier. She called the launch in the new spacecraft an "incredible ride uphill." This mission is Whitson's second with Axiom Space. Upon reaching orbit, the name of the latest SpaceX Dragon capsule, the final addition to the fleet, was revealed to be Grace. During a media briefing earlier this month, the crew had teased that the name would be related to their zero-gravity indicator — a plush swan. "Grace is more than a name. It reflects the elegance at which we move through space against the backdrop of Earth," Whitson said. "Grace reminds us that spaceflight is not just a feat of engineering, but an act of goodwill." Joining Whitson are first-time fliers Shubhanshu Shukla from India, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. The mission brings a return to human spaceflight for these three countries, as in over 40 years the countries have not seen a government-sponsored astronaut. When is the next Florida launch? Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, Axiom, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral It was the fourth astronaut mission for Axiom Space, which is working to build one of the many private space stations planned in the next decade after the ISS is deorbited. The crew is expected to reach the ISS no earlier than 7 a.m. June 26. The four will spend two weeks onboard the space station where they will oversee 60 science experiments. These experiments include a project which will investigate glucose monitoring and insulin onboard the ISS. Depending on results, findings could make it possible for individuals with diabetes to fly in space. Currently, those with diabetes are disqualified due to medical unknowns. Another test by Booz Allen Hamilton, a technology company, will oversee biometric readings on a crew member using the Oura Ring. This project looks at analyzing and storing readings such as sleep quality and heart rate. Other experiments will look at cancer growth, how the space environment impacts human perception, as well as plant nutrition and growth in space. Once the mission is complete, the crew will splash down off the coast of California, where SpaceX recently moved its Dragon recovery operations. The Axiom launch was the first of a planned doubleheader on the Space Coast, with a SpaceX Starlink launch set for Wednesday afternoon. Brooke Edwards is a Space Reporter for Florida Today. Shubhanshu Shukla's Axiom-4 Mission Launch Live Updates: The countdown has begun! Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is all set to lift off into space today, June 25, as part of the highly anticipated Axiom Space Mission 4. The historic launch, scheduled for 12 noon IST (2:31 a.m. EDT), marks India's major leap in human spaceflight efforts. The crew will take off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, aboard SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, launched by the Falcon 9 rocket. This is a joint mission led by NASA, Axiom Space, SpaceX, ISRO, and the European Space Agency (ESA). Shukla, representing ISRO and the Indian Air Force, will serve as the mission's pilot, making him the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma's landmark journey in 1984. He will be accompanied by mission commander and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, and specialists from Poland and Hungary, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu. The Axiom-4 mission, also dubbed Mission Akash Ganga, was delayed multiple times due to weather and technical setbacks. Initially set for May 29, today's launch follows rigorous checks by SpaceX and ISRO for maximum safety. The Indian space agency acquired Shukla's seat on the mission for a reported ₹550 crore, making this India's first participation in a private international spaceflight mission. The crew will spend about two weeks aboard the International Space Station conducting research and outreach. Docking is expected to take place tomorrow, June 26, at 4:30 PM IST. After the SpaceX rocket launch, here's how to see the booster land at Cape Canaveral SFS
With the crew of Axiom Space Mission 4 set to lift off at 8 a.m. June 11 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center pad 39A, those watching from the Space Coast are in for a treat as SpaceX plans to return its booster on land. Common in missions traveling to the International Space Station, just more than eight minutes after launch, the Falcon 9's booster will come barreling back to Cape Canaveral Landing Zone 1, triggering a sonic boom. With the remaining booster fuel enough to allow a land return, it eliminates the need for SpaceX to land the booster on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. It's a win for all, as it brings the booster back to SpaceX right away, and gives viewers a glimpse of an event that was science fiction just a decade ago. What to know about the Ax-4 mission: Doubleheader launch: Ax-4 astronauts to launch on SpaceX rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center So how can you watch the SpaceX booster return? Afterall, it's easy to hear the resulting sonic boom but where do you look to see the rocket descend toward Cape Canaveral. The SpaceX Falcon 9 booster (first stage) will return to Cape Canaveral Landing Zone 1, which is located just southeast of NASA's Kennedy Space Center pad 39A. For reference, the landing zones are in the area just north of the Cape Canaveral lighthouse. No matter your location, keep your eyes more to the east after liftoff. Local beaches: A great place to see the booster return is from either Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach, where there is a clear view of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on the northern horizon. Jetty Park: Jetty Park is also a great place to watch the booster return, as well as the launch. From the jetty, a clear view to the north is provided. This is also the closet the public can get to the booster return site. Take note that Jetty Park requires either a pass or daily fee to enter. The return of the booster will be not instantaneous after the launch, so do not leave or look away. Keep in mind that weather conditions play a part in exactly what will be visible. In total, it takes just over eight minutes to see the booster return. Stage separation, which is where the rocket's upper stage and booster separate, is visible a bit after liftoff. However, while the upper stage may remain viable, the booster can vanish for a bit as it begins descending to Earth. While the booster descends, a short burn working to slow the booster may be visible to spectators. After this, the booster will vanish again for a bit. As the booster comes in for a landing, the glowing and consistent landing burn will be visible to those watching. This landing burn does not last long, but is unmistakable. At this point, there will be a view of the booster as it slowly descends vertically toward Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. When is the next Florida launch? Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, Axiom, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral The booster will descend out of view as it lands, but the show is not over. Shortly afterward, a loud sonic boom will sound throughout the area. This thunderous sound is created due to the booster's return speed being faster than sound. As light travels faster than sound, those on the ground see the booster come back first before the sound travels to their location.
