‘F1' Sequel Should Reunite Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in a ‘Days of Thunder' Crossover, Says Joseph Kosinski: ‘Who Wouldn't Pay to See Those Two on the Track?'
'F1' director Joseph Kosinski spoke to GQ Magazine UK and said his dream for a sequel to his Brad Pitt-racing drama is to actually bring in Tom Cruise for a 'Days of Thunder' crossover. Kosinski previously directed Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick,' which earned $1.4 billion at the box office, and the duo are currently developing a third 'Top Gun' movie together. 'Well, right now, it'd be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise's] 'Days of Thunder' character, we find out that he and [Brad Pitt's] Sonny Hayes have a past,' Kosinski said about his dream pitch. 'They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on 'Interview With a Vampire' that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?' More from Variety New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week Micheal Cera Says Tom Cruise Called Him Out on Set for 'Talking During a F‑‑‑ing Take,' Trolled Him While in Character as Les Grossman From 'Tropic Thunder' Brad Pitt's 'F1' to Top the Box Office but Projections for Apple's Big-Budget Racing Drama Are All Over the Place Kosinski originally planned to bring Pitt and Cruise together on the big screen in his own version of 'Ford v Ferrari.' The actors were going to do all of their own racing in the movie, but the studio would not approve Kosinski's desired budget. James Mangold ended up directing 'Ford v Ferrari' with Christian Bale and Matt Damon instead. 'Yeah, I got close with that,' Kosinski told GQ UK. 'But yeah, you know, everything worked out for the best. I got to do 'F1.' But anything's possible.' Pitt and Cruise haven't starred together in a movie since 1994's horror classic 'Interview With the Vampire,' although they have remained friends. Pitt recently showed up at the 'F1' London premiere and posed for photos with Pitt, who told E! News earlier this month that he's interested in acting with Cruise again on one condition: 'I'm not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and shit like that.' Cruise said on Today Show Australia in May while promoting 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' that he's 'thinking and talking about what could we do and what's possible' when it comes to a proper 'Days of Thunder' sequel. News broke last November that Cruise was developing a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR drama. As for the 'Top Gun: Maverick' sequel, Kosinski told GQ: 'I think we've found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we're proposing, but the idea itself of the story we're telling. We're thinking much bigger than… It's a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it's much bigger than himself. It's an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small, I think, as a movie, compared to what we're talking about.' 'Yeah, there's still more story to tell for him,' he added. 'There's one last ride. So we're working on it now… we'll only do it if we feel like we've got a strong enough story.' Swedish House Mafia teases NYC return with cryptic Times Square billboard
Swedish House Mafia may be plotting a return to the Big Apple — and New Yorkers are already losing it. The iconic electronic dance music trio — Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso — sparked a frenzy Wednesday when the supergroup made a surprise announcement in Times Square: 'New York See You Soon. Swedish House Mafia.' 4 The Times Square billboard flashed during a livestream of the group's three-hour Stockholm set, where they debuted a new track, 'Wait So Long.' Getty Images for Atlantis The Royal Advertisement The message flashed on a billboard during a livestream of their three-hour set in Stockholm, where they debuted a new track, 'Wait So Long.' Just a week earlier, they'd wiped their Instagram clean and posted a shadowy photo of the three of them with the cryptic caption '3.0' — a move that racked up nearly 100,000 likes and marked what fans are calling a new era. A screenshot of the billboard's location — West 50th and Broadway — was then posted to the group's Instagram story, sending fans into a frenzy across TikTok, Reddit and EDM fan pages. 'I beg tell me when, I need to be there,' vowed one user on TikTok. Advertisement 4 The billboard's surprise debut during a Stockholm livestream lit up TikTok, where fans instantly began posting about their excitement — some even vowing to come out of 'retirement' if the group hits NYC. @dol1house/ X 'Pulling out of retirement just for them,' another added. Danielle Tourloukis, 24, a self-described 'huge fan' of Swedish House Mafia who lives in Murray Hill, told the Post that hearing the news gave her 'chills.' 'Can't wait to be dancing to this again,' she wrote in a TikTok from her account @itsdanitour, sharing a video of herself and two friends dancing in the streets of New York to Swedish House Mafia's 'One.' Getty Images Despite the tease, the group hasn't announced any U.S. dates on their current tour, which has them headlining festivals across Europe. Their last NYC appearance was a surprise April 2024 set at Brooklyn Mirage. Formed in Stockholm in the late 2000s, the group remains one of the most recognizable names in EDM, with smash hits like 'Don't You Worry Child,' 'Save The World' and 'Miami 2 Ibiza.' They have sold out stadiums around the world — including Madison Square Garden in 2011. 'F1' Movie Finishes With $10M in Early Showings Ahead of Opening Weekend
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a run of previews, the early results for "F1" at the box office are in and show some promise. The motorsport movie netted $10 million at the box office during early screenings. The movie opened on Friday, June 27, though certain theaters were holding early showings ahead of the official release. The projected box office is $115 million for the opening weekend, recouping more than half of the film's reported production cost. The movie reportedly cost a total of about $200 million to produce - without accounting for the marketing budget. Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon and Damson Idris attend the European Premiere of F1 ® The Movie at Cineworld, Leicester Square on June 23, 2025 in London, England. Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon and Damson Idris attend the European Premiere of F1 ® The Movie at Cineworld, Leicester Square on June 23, 2025 in London, England. Photo byJoseph Kosinski directed the film, which was produced by Apple Studios and features notable input from seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton was a producer on the film, giving his feedback on the accuracy of the movie to the sport itself. The Ferrari driver also added to the story of the movie, according to Kosinski. "Lewis also contributed to the story. I mean, there's a part in the film where Sonny Hayes talks about why he races, and almost the spiritual side of it," the director said. "And that also was inspired by a conversation with Lewis. His involvement has been amazing. We couldn't make the film without him." Kosinski also worked on "Top Gun: Maverick," making him the ideal leader of an action film featuring some of the fastest cars on the planet. Legendary composer Hans Zimmer worked on the music for the film. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris are the lead actors in the film, portraying two teammates who battle it out on the track. Ahead of the movie, both Pitt and Idris went through exhaustive training for the film, driving several race cars at different tracks. "F1" features real drivers and teams appearing and making cameos, adding to the film's realism and connecting the atmosphere to what happened in the 2023 season. The movie sees retired driver Sonny Hayes return to the paddock after his former teammate and friend, Ruben, asks him to come back. The fictional team APXGP is on the verge of being sold and needs a sharp upturn in form. Hayes, played by Pitt, needs to mentor the young hotshot Joshua Pierce (Idris) as the pair takes on a mentor-mentee relationship. The movie is set to be a summer blockbuster, pacing to beat out many of the summer movies, though it will likely fall short of Marvel's "Fantastic Four" and "Superman."
