Zamalek appoint Belgian Yannick Ferrera as new coach - Egyptian Football
Egyptian giants Zamalek have appointed Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera as their new manager on a one-year contract, replacing interim coach Ayman El-Ramady. The 44-year-old Ferrera arrived in Cairo late on Thursday to finalize the deal and begin preparations for the upcoming Egyptian Premier League season, which kicks off on 8 August. Ferrera, who has previously managed Standard Liege and Sint-Truiden in Belgium, brings valuable experience to the Cairo-based club. He won the Belgian Cup with Standard Liege in 2015-16 and led Sint-Truiden to promotion by claiming the Belgian Second Division title in 2014. He later served as assistant coach to Michel Preud'homme at AA Gent and followed him to Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab. Ferrera took charge of Sint-Truiden in 2013, guiding them to top-flight promotion. He then managed Standard Liege starting in September 2015. More recently, he gained experience in the Saudi Professional League, leading Al-Fateh in 2019 and Al-Riyadh in 2023. In 2024, he joined Belgian side RWD Molenbeek in a relegation battle, but the club was ultimately demoted. Zamalek's search for a new coach Zamalek have been searching for a permanent coach since the departure of Portuguese manager José Peseiro last season. Peseiro was hired in February to replace Swiss coach Christian Gross, becoming the club's third coach that season. Under interim coach Ayman El-Ramady, Zamalek won the Egypt Cup but finished third in the Egyptian Premier League with 47 points, eleven behind champions Ahly. They have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup for the upcoming season. The Egyptian Premier League is scheduled to run from 8 August through late May next year. Preview: Zamalek aim high note in league finale against Pharco FC after poor season - Egyptian Football
Cairo giants Zamalek will be aiming to salvage pride from a disappointing Egyptian Premier League campaign when they face Pharco FC in the final matchday of the playoff stage at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday. The White Knights enter the match with renewed confidence after securing their first win under interim coach Ayman El-Ramady, defeating Petrojet 3-1 last Saturday. El-Ramady, 60, was appointed interim manager on 7 May becoming the fourth manager to take over the team this season after Jose Gomes, Christian Gross and Jose Peseiro. He had a shaky start at the Cairo-based side, drawing 2-2 with Ceramica Cleopatra and suffering a slim 1-0 defeat to Pyramids FC. Zamalek are currently third in the league standings with 44 points, 14 behind champions Ahly and 12 adrift of second-placed Pyramids FC. El-Ramady faces challenges with a growing injury list that includes Ahmed Jafeli, Ahmed Fatouh, and Hamza Mathouthi, and Moroccan left-back Mahmoud Bentayg all of whom will miss the game. Fortunately, he will receive a boost as several injured players are set to return. Midfield duo Nasser Maher and Mahmoud Gehad have recovered and will be available for selection. The team's top scorer Nasser Mansi has also resumed training but may not start the game. Mansi has a personal challenge as he will be hoping to score a double to match Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour's 13 goals at the top of the league's scoring chart. This match serves as valuable preparation for Zamalek ahead of their Egypt Cup final against Pyramids FC on 5 June. Pharco FC, meanwhile, arrive following a heavy 6-0 defeat to Ahly on Wednesday, in a match that marked the Red Devils' coronation ceremony for their record-extending 45th league title. Preview: No room for error against Zamalek as Pyramids FC look to keep title hopes alive - Egyptian Football
Pyramids FC will be in a must-win situation when they take on Zamalek on Tuesday as they seek to keep their Egyptian Premier League title hopes alive following two consecutive defeats. After dropping six points in their last two matches, Pyramids have slipped from the top of the table to second place on 47 points, two behind reigning champions Ahly. With three matches remaining, Zamalek sit third on 41 points and are chasing a CAF Champions League berth by finishing second. Both sides head into the match under pressure after poor results in the championship play-offs. Pyramids suffered shock defeats to Pharco FC (3-2) and NBE Club (4-2), while Zamalek were held to three consecutive draws. Tuesday's match will be the second in charge for Pyramids caretaker coach Ayman El-Ramady, who began his mission with a 2-2 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra on Friday. Mahmoud 'Shikabala' Abdel-Razek, full back Ahmed Fatouh and midfielder Mohamed Shehata will be available on Tuesday. Pyramids, meanwhile, will be without classy striker Fiston Mayele, who is suspended. The Congolese forward has scored seven goals this season and has been a focal point of their attack. In his absence, Pyramids will look to Ibrahim Adel, and Marawan Hamdi as attacking duo Ramadan Sobhi and Mostafa Fathi is doubtful for the game.
