Zamalek appoint Belgian Yannick Ferrera as new coach - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Egyptian giants Zamalek have appointed Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera as their new manager on a one-year contract, replacing interim coach Ayman El-Ramady.
The 44-year-old Ferrera arrived in Cairo late on Thursday to finalize the deal and begin preparations for the upcoming Egyptian Premier League season, which kicks off on 8 August.
Ferrera, who has previously managed Standard Liege and Sint-Truiden in Belgium, brings valuable experience to the Cairo-based club.
He won the Belgian Cup with Standard Liege in 2015-16 and led Sint-Truiden to promotion by claiming the Belgian Second Division title in 2014.
Managerial career highlights
His coaching career began in 2004 with Anderlecht's youth team, where he worked alongside future stars Romelu Lukaku and Adnan Januzaj.
He later served as assistant coach to Michel Preud'homme at AA Gent and followed him to Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab.
Ferrera took charge of Sint-Truiden in 2013, guiding them to top-flight promotion.
He then managed Standard Liege starting in September 2015.
More recently, he gained experience in the Saudi Professional League, leading Al-Fateh in 2019 and Al-Riyadh in 2023.
In 2024, he joined Belgian side RWD Molenbeek in a relegation battle, but the club was ultimately demoted.
Zamalek's search for a new coach
Zamalek have been searching for a permanent coach since the departure of Portuguese manager José Peseiro last season.
Peseiro was hired in February to replace Swiss coach Christian Gross, becoming the club's third coach that season.
Under interim coach Ayman El-Ramady, Zamalek won the Egypt Cup but finished third in the Egyptian Premier League with 47 points, eleven behind champions Ahly.
They have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup for the upcoming season.
The Egyptian Premier League is scheduled to run from 8 August through late May next year.

Arsenal signs Spain midfielder Zubimendi from Real Sociedad - World

Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad on Sunday, finally making the move to the Premier League after turning down Liverpool last year. The transfer fee wasn't disclosed but the BBC reported Arsenal has paid almost 60 million pounds ($82 million) for the 26-year-old Zubimendi. The holding midfielder made 236 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad after coming through the club's academy. He played there alongside Mikel Merino, who joined Arsenal last year. Zubimendi has played 19 games for Spain, including coming on as a half-time substitute in the 2-1 win over England in the 2024 European Championship final. 'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me,' Zubimendi said. 'They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.' Arsenal has finished second in the Premier League in each of the past three seasons. 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team,' said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, a fellow Spaniard. 'He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.' Zubimendi slots into the squad in place of Thomas Partey, whose contract expired this summer. On Friday, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, British police said. Messi returns to MLS with spectacular double in Inter victory - World

Lionel Messi scored two brilliant goals to lift Inter Miami to a 4-1 victory over Montreal in Miami's return to Major League Soccer action on Saturday in the wake of their elimination from the Club World Cup. Miami were playing their first MLS game in more than a month. They had advanced past the first phase of the Club World Cup but fell 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 last week. Messi made sure there was no lingering let-down for Javier Mascherano's side, who are aiming to improve on their curent sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 17 matches. "It is a great night, we took the three points that were very necessary to start thinking about the MLS again," Mascherano said. "It is never easy to reintegrate into the competition after the Club World Cup, and the players have done it perfectly." Messi was a key figure throughout, although it was his miscue that led to the first goal for Montreal. His backpass fell right in front of Montreal's Prince Owusu, who fired a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Oscar Ustari to make it 1-0 after two minutes. Messi more than atoned. In the 33rd minute, Messi found Tadeo Allende outside the area and Allende chipped a shot over Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirios. In the 40th minute Messi conjured his trademark magic, cutting in from the right corner of the box, eluding Fernando Alvarez and curling the ball in at the far post for a goal that gave Miami a 2-1 halftime lead. Telasco Segovia made it 3-1 in the 60th minute with a blast from outside the area that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net. Messi bagged his second goal two minutes later, evading four defenders and finishing an outstanding solo run with a shot into the heart of the goal. Messi now has seven goals in his last four MLS matches, bringing his total to 12 in 14 games. "Leo is happy playing football," Mascherano said. "Every time he is fit, he is going to play. Clearly we have an extra advantage when he plays and we want to use that advantage as much as possible." Miami now face a hectic MLS stretch, with five more matches before the end of the month.
