Woman arrested over alleged abuse of adopted son in Jelebu

SEREMBAN: Police have arrested a woman to assist in investigations into the alleged abuse of her 13-year-old adopted child in Kuala Klawang, Jelebu. Jelebu district police chief Supt Azizan Said said a Social Welfare Department (JKM) officer lodged a report on the incident involving the Form One student via Talian Kasih. He said the 35-year-old suspect, who has two biological children aged five years and seven months, respectively, was arrested on June 16. "Initial investigations revealed that the victim has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is categorised as a person with a disability, and has been under the suspect's care since he was six. "The boy said he would be beaten if he was late or failed to follow instructions. The victim also complained that he was frequently shouted at, cursed at, and hit with objects like clothes hangers," he said in a statement. Azizan said the victim also claimed he was beaten with the metal extension tube of a vacuum cleaner, resulting in bruises on several parts of his body, including the elbow, wrist and back, while getting ready for his school sports day on June 14. He said the boy was later rescued by the JKM after it received an email from a woman reporting a case of child abuse at the house. According to him, the victim was taken to Jelebu Hospital for examination, and a medical report confirmed that the injuries were caused by a blunt rod-shaped object and were believed to have been sustained within three days prior to the check-up. Azizan said police were still waiting for the full medical report and that further investigations were ongoing to determine whether the injuries were due to abuse or resulted from the victim's hyperactive behaviour. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children's Act 2001.–BERNAMA

Bursa Malaysia appoints Bank Islam's Azizan Abd Aziz as new CFO

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Bhd has appointed Azizan Abd Aziz as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective Aug 1, 2025, following the resignation of Rosidah Baharom last month. Azizan joins the exchange from Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd, where he has served as CFO since May 2019 and was later promoted to Group CFO following the Islamic bank's listing in October 2021. In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, Bank Islam confirmed that Azizan has stepped down to pursue other career opportunities, with his last working day set for July 31. Bursa Malaysia announced Azizan's appointment in a separate filing, highlighting his more than 20 years of experience in accounting, finance and advisory, including previous roles at Deloitte Malaysia and KPMG United Kingdom. "Azizan's extensive expertise in both conventional and Islamic finance makes him well-suited to steer Bursa Malaysia's financial strategy and governance," the exchange said. Azizan's entry into Bursa Malaysia follows the departure of Rosidah, who officially stepped down on May 17 to pursue personal interests, prompting a search for her replacement. During the interim, group finance and corporate services executive vice president Rasmona Abdul Rahman was appointed acting CFO to ensure continuity. Azizan is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and holds a chartered professional qualification in Islamic Finance. He earned his degree in accounting and finance from the University of Plymouth in the UK.

Isham Jalil awaits July 1 contempt ruling over judiciary remarks on Najib's SRC, 1MDB trials

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Former Umno information chief Isham Jalil will know on July 1 whether he will be held in contempt of court over remarks allegedly undermining public confidence in the judiciary. High Court judge K. Muniandy fixed the date after hearing submissions in the committal proceedings filed by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), according to New Straits Times. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam argued, 'The respondent has tarnished the judiciary's reputation when he questioned the actions and decision of the Federal Court and the High Court involving both 1MDB and SRC International criminal cases.' He said Isham's comments posed a real risk of eroding public trust in the justice system. Isham's lawyer Tan Sri Azizan Harun contended that the statements were not made with the intent to bring the court into disrepute. Azizan also said the AGC failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that his client's actions amounted to contempt. He added that the grounds raised during the hearing differed from those stated during the initial application, leaving Isham unclear on how to mount a proper defence. 'The courts must be strong enough to withstand criticism and should not overreact, especially in today's social media era where everyone is free to express their opinions,' Azizan said. He questioned why Isham could not express views similar to those raised by Datuk Seri Najib Razak's lawyers during court proceedings. The AGC filed the application on December 28, 2023, based on Isham's remarks in an interview titled 'Townhall For Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa? (Who is Justice Really For?)' The interview, which included criticism of Najib's corruption trial and appeal related to 1MDB and SRC International Sdn Bhd, was posted on the Facebook page of The Malaya Post on September 30, 2023.
