MindsEye dev warns staff about layoffs amid talk of saboteurs and 'relaunch'

Microsoft isn't the only gaming company talking about layoffs this week. MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy (BARB) notified around 300 employees that they risk losing their jobs. However, the drama doesn't end there. The studio has reportedly blamed saboteurs for its woes… again. BARB workers posted on LinkedIn this week about receiving "risk of redundancy" emails. (That followed confirmation last month that the company formally began a layoff process.) Unfortunately, layoffs are par for the course these days. As for the rest of BARB's story? That's where things get weird. IGN reported that BARB founder Leslie Benzies addressed staff in a video call this week. (He's a former Rockstar North president and GTA producer.) Benzies is said to have blamed BARB's and MindsEye 's problems on internal and external saboteurs. That echoes comments made by co-CEO Mark Gerhard ahead of MindsEye 's launch. He claimed pre-release negative feedback was "100 percent" financed by someone. Who did Gerhard blame? Well, he didn't say outright. But he seemed to hint that Rockstar was involved. "Doesn't take much to guess who," he said. (Benzies departed the GTA developer on rocky terms, legal disputes in tow.) In yesterday's call, Benzies also reportedly vowed to relaunch MindsEye . That's a tough trick to pull off. Just look at the industry's few success stories. Final Fantasy XIV is part of an established franchise that has been a gaming household name for decades. And then you have titles like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 that were gradually updated. They both arrived with considerably more interest from the gaming world than MindsEye . The latter's appeal largely came from Benzies' involvement. Will that even carry much weight after all the drama surrounding the launch? That isn't to say MindsEye couldn't improve dramatically and find a following. The single-player action-adventure game has a noticeable GTA influence, which will appeal to many. Criticism was aimed at its bugs (fixable), well-worn storyline (greedy humans and robot armies) and gameplay (drive, shoot, repeat). But it also has impressive cinematics and a tight linear arc. A tighter, bug-free version could scratch an itch for fans of Cyberpunk and Watch Dogs. MindsEye is also published by IO Interactive, which worked on Hitman: World of Assassination for years after launch. If BARB can hustle to regain players' trust, perhaps it could at least live to fight another day. Still, MindsEye 's list of ingredients doesn't exactly scream "gamers will come back." And with around 300 fewer employees working on it, that's an even taller order.

Doctor Who's 'risky' gamble paid off in the best way possible

Doctor Who is no stranger to risk. After all the tenacious Time Lord has spent the last six decades battling Daleks, Cybermen, and other terrors beyond our imagination. Yet the Doctor, or Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies to be more specific, has just pulled off an incredibly risky gamble. While plotting this year's series, Russell rather cleverly devised an episode that was essentially a love letter to the Eurovision Song Contest… or The Interstellar Song Contest, as the episode was called Even better, the 62-year-old pulled off a piece of scheduling wizardry that ensured the episode would air on BBC1 on the same day as the Song Contest. It was a marketing coup and one that earned the episode a lot of publicity. To make a sweet situation even sweeter, the FA Cup final was due to be shown before Doctor Who, offering the sci-fi series an impressive audience lead-in. In theory, then, The Interstellar Song Contest was set up for success, but here's where the risk comes in. Scheduling the episode around two live TV events had the potential to massively backfire. If the FA Cup went to extra time or penalties, then Doctor Who would have to move to a later timeslot, but because Eurovision is also live, it couldn't be pushed later. That meant Doctor's latest adventure was at risk of being bumped from the schedule entirely, a possibility that terrified fans online as at best it would have undone all Russell's carefully laid publicity plans and at worst thrown off later episodes of Doctor Who which have all been building to a cataclysmic event happening on May 24. Thankfully, the worst didn't come to pass. In fact, it seems like Russell's bet that this would get the show more attention has paid off splendidly. According to BARB – an organisation dedicated to measuring television ratings in the United Kingdom – The Interstellar Song Contest has been watched by 3,754,000 so far, including streaming. That makes it the most viewed episode of the season, not including the Christmas Special, and it was the ninth most watched show the week of May 12 to May 18. Of course, not everyone will have been watching the show right before Eurovision, but it's clear that the effort that went into promoting this episode has had a positive effect on audience numbers. More Trending Time will tell if the series can keep up these viewing figures. Ncuti Gatwa's second series has been a hit with fans and critics, who've praised the writing and performances, but sadly, this has failed to pull in viewers. Last we heard, the BBC hit back at claims that Ncuti had been axed from the show, but with rumours swirling of a possible regeneration during Sunday's episode, The Reality War, it's likely that the grand finale will attract a lot of attention, but not necessarily for the right reasons. Doctor Who: The Reality War will air on May 31 at 6:50pm on BBC1 Got a story? Netflix's 'Adolescence' sets new record in UK TV ratings

Netflix's critically acclaimed drama Adolescence has broken new ground in the U.K. television industry, becoming the first streaming series to top the country's weekly TV ratings. The show outperformed major traditional broadcasters, including BBC's The Apprentice and Death in Paradise, according to official data from the U.K.'s Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB). In its debut week, Adolescence attracted an impressive 6.45 million viewers, setting a new streaming record in the U.K. The previous record was 6.3 million, held by Netflix's Fool Me Once in January 2024. The second episode continued the series' success, drawing 5.94 million viewers, while The Apprentice and Death in Paradise secured third and fourth spots with 5.79 million and 5.75 million viewers, respectively. The show maintained strong viewership throughout its early episodes, with the third and fourth episodes attracting 5.14 million and 4.65 million viewers. Premiering on March 13, Adolescence quickly sparked global attention with its gripping story about a 13-year-old boy arrested for the suspected murder of a schoolmate. The series has been praised for its innovative single-shot filming technique, which adds intensity to the narrative. Critics have lauded the show for its dark, raw exploration of youth, masculinity, and the influence of social media. Aramide Tinubu, reviewing the series for Variety, called it 'gutting, raw and stunningly acted,' noting its powerful commentary on the rising 'manosphere' and its effects on young people. The cast includes Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Christine Tremarco, and Amelie Pease. While Adolescence has set a new milestone for streaming platforms, it still trails behind some of the year's top broadcast programs in terms of overall viewership. The Traitors, Call The Midwife, and Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell all garnered higher seven-day audience figures. Additionally, ITV's Mr Bates vs the Post Office reached 10 million viewers in its debut week last year. BARB began incorporating streaming data into its ratings in 2021, and Netflix joined in October 2022, marking the growing impact of digital platforms on the television landscape.
