Doctor Who's 'risky' gamble paid off in the best way possible
Yet the Doctor, or Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies to be more specific, has just pulled off an incredibly risky gamble.
While plotting this year's series, Russell rather cleverly devised an episode that was essentially a love letter to the Eurovision Song Contest… or The Interstellar Song Contest, as the episode was called
Even better, the 62-year-old pulled off a piece of scheduling wizardry that ensured the episode would air on BBC1 on the same day as the Song Contest. It was a marketing coup and one that earned the episode a lot of publicity.
To make a sweet situation even sweeter, the FA Cup final was due to be shown before Doctor Who, offering the sci-fi series an impressive audience lead-in.

In theory, then, The Interstellar Song Contest was set up for success, but here's where the risk comes in. Scheduling the episode around two live TV events had the potential to massively backfire.
If the FA Cup went to extra time or penalties, then Doctor Who would have to move to a later timeslot, but because Eurovision is also live, it couldn't be pushed later.
That meant Doctor's latest adventure was at risk of being bumped from the schedule entirely, a possibility that terrified fans online as at best it would have undone all Russell's carefully laid publicity plans and at worst thrown off later episodes of Doctor Who which have all been building to a cataclysmic event happening on May 24.
Thankfully, the worst didn't come to pass. In fact, it seems like Russell's bet that this would get the show more attention has paid off splendidly.
According to BARB – an organisation dedicated to measuring television ratings in the United Kingdom – The Interstellar Song Contest has been watched by 3,754,000 so far, including streaming.
That makes it the most viewed episode of the season, not including the Christmas Special, and it was the ninth most watched show the week of May 12 to May 18.
Of course, not everyone will have been watching the show right before Eurovision, but it's clear that the effort that went into promoting this episode has had a positive effect on audience numbers. More Trending
Time will tell if the series can keep up these viewing figures. Ncuti Gatwa's second series has been a hit with fans and critics, who've praised the writing and performances, but sadly, this has failed to pull in viewers.

The episode Lux has the ignominy of being the lowest viewed episode since the show's revival in 2005, and there has been endless press speculation that the show may be running out of road.
Last we heard, the BBC hit back at claims that Ncuti had been axed from the show, but with rumours swirling of a possible regeneration during Sunday's episode, The Reality War, it's likely that the grand finale will attract a lot of attention, but not necessarily for the right reasons.

'I'll die on that hill': WWE star reveals how she fought against bosses' plans

The 34-year-old wrestler is one of the big names showcased in Netflix's new WWE Unreal docu-series, and in one episode viewers will see the debate surrounding the crowing of the first ever Women's United States Champion at Saturday Night's Main Event. Chelsea was set to win the historic match in December 2024, but the documentary shows how producers – who help wrestlers plan their matches – wanted her to win with a top rope leg drop. However, she star pushed back, insisting she should get her big moment by using her signature Unprettier move. She exclusively told Metro: 'I literally did a leg drop and peed my pants while we were rehearsing it. Speaking up like that is out of character for Chelsea, as normally she's happy to 'run the play' and do whatever she's told. 'Honestly, no, I don't speak up that often. I usually just like to run the play. Whatever they want to do,' she admitted. 'However, there are certain moments in my career where I am willing to die on that hill, and that was one of them. 'This could quite possibly be the tippy top of my career, and I'm not going out doing someone else's finisher or doing a move I don't feel comfortable with!' It meant a lot to Chelsea, but the consummate professional insisted she would 'never' have gone off script if her bosses had decided otherwise. 'I've never been one of those people to call an audible because unless something goes wrong in the ring, I feel like it's taking advantage,' she explained. 'I never want to take advantage of my coworkers. I never want to take advantage of my producers. They trust me.' As Unreal shows, there are a lot of moving parts to WWE, and anything can go wrong. Recently, Chelsea was accidentally counted out during a match on SmackDown, and she's admitted it was her fault. 'If I do something wrong, I come back and I immediately put my hands up, 'I messed up', and that's what I did in that moment,' she recalled. 'I stayed in character, and the minute I got to [Gorilla Position, backstage], it's like, 'I am so sorry I messed up. That was on me. I was out there not paying attention.' The referee was doing his job. I cannot fault anyone for that!' Mistakes like that are part of wrestling, and it didn't hurt Chelsea's standing as weeks later she found herself facing Hall of Famer Nikki Bella in her first match since 2018. 'It's nerve wracking because we've been waiting for this for years,' she said. 'We have been dying to see Nikki Bella make this beautiful comeback after a neck surgery, and after being the longest reigning Divas Champion. There was just so much riding on it.' It was a lot for Chelsea too, who had been pitching to face Nikki at WrestleMania earlier this year, but ended up missing out on the show altogether. 'Maybe this is big headed of me to say, but I think most of us wanted to see the [Women's] US title at WrestleMania in a match,' she shrugged. 'I pushed a lot for that title to be on WrestleMania. But unfortunately, we have so much talent, we have so many titles, we only have a certain amount of hours [the roster] can wrestle.' Her moment with Nikki came after Liv Morgan's unfortunate injury forced WWE into a scramble for creative changes, the likes of which are seen playing out in WWE Unreal. 'I never wanted to see Liv go down the way she did, but when that happened, that did allow me to step in and fill that place,' she pointed out. 'I can hang with the best of them, and Nikki Bella is the best of them.' Chelsea feels like she's being listened to backstage, after years of 'constantly pitching absolutely ridiculous ideas'. 'They really have taken a lot of my suggestions to heart. And it may not go to TV exactly how I pitched it,' she admitted. 'But it goes to TV in one way or another.' Strictly Come Dancing confirms two new professionals after show scandals

Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon will waltz onto the Strictly dancefloor when the show returns this autumn. Warr is best known for winning the US dance series So You Think You Can Dance in 2022 and became the first female ballroom and Latin dancer to be crowned America's Favourite Dancer. It isn't her first shimmy with Strictly as the dancer appeared on the US version of the show as a guest professional dancer, and has also appeared on Dancing With The Stars, America's Got Talent, and World of Dance. Caillon appeared on three seasons of Australia's Dancing With The Stars and also starred in So You Think You Can Dance Australia. After a probe into the allegations, the BBC issued an apology to the Sherlock star – upholding a number of points, but clearing Pernice of the most serious claims. EastEnders star confirms different side to Oscar as things take a turn
Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier) is set to do something 'awful' to Peter Beale (Thomas Law) in EastEnders next week. The newcomer has made quite the impact on Albert Square and viewers alike ever since he arrived in the BBC One soap last week. Sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) was forced to take him in after being released from a three-month stretch in a young offenders institute, where he'd spent time for joyriding. Their mum Tanya (Jo Joyner) had made it clear that he wasn't welcome to return to her house as a result of the dodgy characters he was hanging around with. When Oscar tipped off the police about their involvement in the car robbery, they attempted to petrol bomb his property, mistakenly targeting the neighbours instead. Despite his attempts to escape his brutish mates, they've tracked him down to Walford and are seeking revenge. 'Oscar feels threatened as Mike (Tai Hilferink) is a serious guy who doesn't seem to care about getting caught or the consequences,' actor Pierre told us. 'Since he arrived in the Square, Oscar has been all fun and games, but you'll see another side of him this week because Mike wants to make him suffer for what he's done!' Lauren learns that the thug has been threatening Oscar, and has left a knife as a way of threatening him. She reckons that their their uncle Jack (Scott Maslen) should be alerted for protection. 'Oscar believes getting Jack involved will only make things worse because if Mike finds out that there's a policeman in his family, he'll be even more on [his] case,' Pierre explains. 'I think that because Oscar is a smooth talker and he's been getting himself out of tight spots all his life, he believes he can do it again…' Things soon kick off, and Jack's forced to intervene.
