B.C. man scores $1M lottery ticket tagging along on son's coffee run

The latest lottery millionaire from B.C.'s Lower Mainland scored his lucky ticket after tagging along on his son's coffee run. Burnaby resident Han Sim said he purchased the Lotto 6/49 ticket on whim while accompanying his son to Madison Centre, ultimately winning $1 million in the July 5 draw. Sim said he shared the exciting news with his wife before telling his two sons and his daughter-in-law. 'She was still sleeping,' he told the B.C. Lottery Corporation. 'She couldn't believe it!' With his sudden windfall, Sim said he can help both his sons with their mortgages. He's also planning to take the whole family on a trip to the Fraser Valley. 'We'll go to Harrison Hot Springs together and have a good dinner,' he said. The odds of winning the main Lotto 6/49 jackpot of $5 million – which requires matching all six numbers drawn without using the bonus number – are approximately one in 14 million, according to the BCLC. The odds of winning a guaranteed prize of $1 million or more in the Gold Ball draw depend on the number of tickets sold.

‘Forgetful' $40M lotto winner from Vancouver had winning ticket sitting in his bag for weeks

Daniel Chau, who won a $40 million LottoMax jackpot is shown in this photo provided by the B.C. Lottery Corporation. B.C.'s newest multimillionaire claimed his prize Thursday, describing the fateful moment last month when he purchased the winning ticket for the May 23 draw after a run in Burnaby's Central Park. 'Something really pushed me to buy that ticket without any planning,' he said. That ticket would sit in his bag for another three weeks until a tickle in his throat prompted him to reach for a cough drop earlier this week. 'I buy lots of tickets but I rarely check them. To be honest, I'm very forgetful,' he said, adding that he scanned one ticket that didn't win anything before scanning the second. 'I literally dropped my phone. I have never seen that many zeroes in my life.' Chau has since shared the news with his partner, who he says was incredulous when presented with a screenshot from the BC Lottery Corporation app. 'It took like an hour to convince them this was my ticket,' Chau said. 'We are, like, walking on cloud nine. We are so happy.' Amid the overwhelming emotion, Chau said he is also trying to be rational and practical – saying he will be hiring a financial planner to help him figure out how to manage the windfall responsibly. His plans for the money so far include buying a home for himself and his partner, and one for his parents. 'I want to contribute back to the community, because I know this might be a life-changing experience to me, and I want to use a part of it to change other people's life as well,' Chau said. Checking some destinations he's been saving up money to travel to off of his 'bucket list' is also something Chau says he looks forward to doing. For now, he said he's just trying to enjoy the ride. 'It's like a roller coaster. I love roller coasters,' Chau said. The odds of winning the LottoMax jackpot are one in 33,294,800 per $5 play, according to BCLC. Chau's win marks the second time in a month that someone in B.C. has taken home tens of millions of dollars. Surrey resident Justin Simporios claimed an $80-million prize in the May 9 draw, making him the winner of the largest jackpot ever claimed by a single Canadian.

Louise Kerr, who won $500,000, is shown in this photo provided by the BC Lottery Corporation. The first thing a woman in Prince George did after winning a $500,000 jackpot was order a new lawn tractor, according to the BC Lottery Corporation. Louise Kerr hit it big in the May 9 LottoMax draw, splitting the Maximillion prize with one other lucky player. 'I was at my kitchen table, checking my tickets,' Kerr told the BCLC, which shared the news of her win in a news release Tuesday. 'I just didn't believe it! I double checked the numbers.' After ordering the tractor, Kerr said she's still figuring out how to spend the rest of her money but plans to use some of it to get some repairs done around the house. 'I can hire people to do it. This just frees you up,' she told the BCLC. The odds of matching all seven numbers and winning the Maxmillions draw are three in 99,884,400.

$40 million lottery ticket sold in B.C., same month as record prize win

BURNABY — British Columbia has another multimillion-dollar lottery winner about a week after handing out a record-breaking $80 million win. The B.C. Lottery Corporation says a Lotto Max ticket purchased in Burnaby for Friday's draw matched all seven winning numbers to win the $40 million jackpot. The corporation says in a statement that lottery prize winners have 52 weeks from the draw date printed on their ticket to come forward to claim their prize. The corporation says the seven winning numbers were: 13, 19, 23, 26, 36, 39, and 47. The latest jackpot comes after a Surrey man was given his cheque for $80 million earlier this month after winning what the corporation said was the biggest jackpot ever awarded to a single person in Canada. The corporation says the odds of winning a Lotto Max jackpot are one in 33,294,800 per $5 play. B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $102 million in winnings from Lotto Max so far this year.
