BoS chairman opposes removal of Vedan's song

Kozhikode: It seems Calicut University is heading for a disagreement over the recommendation to remove rapper Vedan's (Hirandas Murali) song 'Bhumi Njan Vazhunnidam' from the third semester BA Malayalam syllabus. The expert committee, appointed by CU vice-chancellor P Raveendran, had suggested removing the song. However, Malayalam UG Board of Studies (BoS) chairman MS Ajith opposed the move, saying it violated academic rules. CU authorities had said they would send the expert panel recommendation to BoS, which has the authority to change the syllabus. But Ajith said it was wrong to rely on an outside expert's opinion on syllabus matters. "BoS had approved the syllabus after detailed discussions. We did not plan to remove the song," he added. Ajith said that if the syllabus must be changed, then it has to be decided by the board or higher academic bodies like the academic council. MM Basheer had submitted a report to Raveendran saying that comparing the musical aspects of Vedan's song with Michael Jackson's 'They Don't Care About Us' would be too demanding for students. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The VC had asked the panel to examine the inclusion of the song in the syllabus. The report submitted by former head of Malayalam department MM Basheer to Raveendran said the comparative study of the musical features of Vedan's and Jackson's songs should be removed and replaced with a more suitable topic. The song was part of the Introduction to Comparative Literature course, under the module Puthu Pravanathakal (new trends). BJP-affiliated member AK Anuraj had objected to including Vedan's song in the syllabus and filed a complaint with governor Rajendra Arlekar. The governor sought a report from the VC, who then instructed Basheer to examine the issue.

Restructure of sub-committees under Administrator's Advisory Council: Tewari seeks H S Lucky's appointment in his place as head of heritage sub-committee

Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament from Chandigarh (MP), Manish Tewari, has written to Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, requesting that Harmohinder Singh Lucky, president, Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC), be appointed as the chairperson of the Sub-Committee on Art, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Preservation in his place. In his letter, Tewari expressed concern over the 'political imbalance' in the composition of chairpersons for the newly constituted sub-committees under the Administrator's Advisory Council. He pointed out that while presidents of various political parties in Chandigarh have been appointed as chairpersons of different sub-committees, Lucky has only been made a member — not a chairperson — which he described as a 'serious anomaly.' The MP emphasised that ideally, such committees should be headed by domain experts with proven credentials in their respective fields. However, since political appointees are being made chairpersons, he argued that all major political parties in the city should be represented fairly. 'There is no dearth of experienced and talented people in Chandigarh who possess deep expertise in their fields. Ideally, such domain experts should be heading these committees,' Tewari wrote, adding that the current structure does not reflect equitable representation. Expressing concern, Tewari wrote 'seven out of ten chairpersons belong to one political dispensation only,' referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), raising questions about whether the appointments were 'inadvertent or deliberate.' The Chandigarh Administration on July 11 restructured its governance framework by forming 10 standing committees under the Administrator's Advisory Council. These committees include professionals, experts, and public figures from a variety of fields. However, the dominance of BJP-affiliated appointees in chairperson roles has drawn criticism from opposition leaders. Tewari urged Kataria to reflect on the matter in the spirit of fairness and to uphold propriety in the advisory structure, especially given his vast political and administrative experience.

Akhilesh Yadav alleges conspiracy behind school mergers, targets BJP over education policy

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government , alleging a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the recent move to merge government schools in rural areas. In a post on X in Hindi, Yadav claimed that the BJP is systematically undermining the education system to deprive future generations of their fundamental right to education. "Education is the truest measure of development. The continued neglect of education and educators under the BJP government raises serious concerns that this is part of a larger conspiracy," he said. Yadav further accused the ruling party of fostering a crowd of "uneducated, superstitious, and unscientific minds" that could be easily manipulated. Highlighting the symbolic importance of having schools within sight, he said, "It is well known that what disappears from sight disappears from the mind. Questioning the government's priorities, Yadav argued, "If a polling booth can be set up for a single voter, why can't a school be run for 30 children?" Calling it a part of a broader "conspiracy to further marginalise the already deprived PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) communities," Yadav urged for resistance against the move and demanded the protection and expansion of government-run schools across Uttar Pradesh. According to sources, the Yogi-Adityanath-led government decided to merge schools to rationalise educational resources and address issues such as low enrolment, teacher shortage, and duplication of infrastructure. The move, officials claim, aims to consolidate small and under-enrolled schools and merge them with nearby institutions. There are about 1.40 lakh primary and upper primary government schools in the state, out of which 29,000 have 50 or fewer students, an official said, adding that around 89,000 teachers are posted in these schools. Yadav also posted a news story from Kannauj, which alleges 38 schools in the districts are facing fear of merger.

Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into 3 BJP workers' murder in Sandeshkhali

Six years after three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were allegedly killed and their bodies mutilated in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, the Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Justice Joy Sengupta directed that the CBI's Joint Director lead the investigation, with progress monitored by the trial court. In June 2019, BJP workers Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal and Sukanta Mondal were found dead. Their families, Supriya Mondal and Padma Mondal, filed two FIRs, and the state CID initially handled the case. Sheikh Shahjahan, a prime accused, was later dropped from both charge sheets, according to the victims' relatives. On January 8 last year, backed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the families returned to the High Court, seeking a CBI probe. Shahjahan has been in judicial custody since his arrest on January 5, 2024, following an alleged assault on ED officers during a raid at his Sandeshkhali home. His bail plea is pending before the High Court. Locals, especially women, have long protested Shahjahan's influence, accusing him and his associates of land grabs, forced fish pond construction on occupied fields and harassment of residents. Opposition parties, including the BJP, staged demonstrations in response to these allegations. In June 2019, three BJP-affiliated workers were found murdered in Sandeshkhali (North 24 Parganas) amid violent street clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Investigators initially linked the killings to local TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, but the state CID later removed his name from the chargesheet. The families alleged police inaction on a 2019 FIR that named Shahjahan. They even sought court protection and a CBI probe. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said the victims' relatives feared reprisals and were placed in a police safe house for protection.
