Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into 3 BJP workers' murder in Sandeshkhali
Justice Joy Sengupta directed that the CBI's Joint Director lead the investigation, with progress monitored by the trial court.
In June 2019, BJP workers Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal and Sukanta Mondal were found dead. Their families, Supriya Mondal and Padma Mondal, filed two FIRs, and the state CID initially handled the case.
Sheikh Shahjahan, a prime accused, was later dropped from both charge sheets, according to the victims' relatives.
On January 8 last year, backed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the families returned to the High Court, seeking a CBI probe.
Shahjahan has been in judicial custody since his arrest on January 5, 2024, following an alleged assault on ED officers during a raid at his Sandeshkhali home. His bail plea is pending before the High Court.
Locals, especially women, have long protested Shahjahan's influence, accusing him and his associates of land grabs, forced fish pond construction on occupied fields and harassment of residents.
Opposition parties, including the BJP, staged demonstrations in response to these allegations.
In June 2019, three BJP-affiliated workers were found murdered in Sandeshkhali (North 24 Parganas) amid violent street clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP.
Investigators initially linked the killings to local TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, but the state CID later removed his name from the chargesheet.
The families alleged police inaction on a 2019 FIR that named Shahjahan. They even sought court protection and a CBI probe.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said the victims' relatives feared reprisals and were placed in a police safe house for protection.

UP man loses ₹1 crore in 'digital arrest' scam with fake court hearings
Shahjahanpur (UP), Jul 2 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested seven men who allegedly impersonated officials from the ED and the CBI to "digitally arrest" a Shahjahanpur resident and swindle more than ₹ one crore through a fabricated online court proceeding, an official said. The gang's modus operandi involved convincing the victim, 60-year-old Sharad Chand, that he was under investigation for an alleged illegal transaction of ₹ 2.8 crore, the officer said. The fraudsters allegedly first contacted him via phone on May 6, posing as ED and CBI officers. Then they escalated the deception by impersonating a judge and conducting fake virtual hearings through WhatsApp for almost a month, according to the police. Digital arrest is a term used in cyber frauds where victims are falsely told they are under surveillance or legal custody through digital means. They are often isolated via continuous video or call surveillance by fraudsters posing as officials, and manipulated into following instructions without alerting others - often leading to extortion or fraud. Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI that during these "virtual hearings", fake lawyers and judges allegedly intimidated Chand, ultimately coercing him into transferring ₹ 1.04 crore across 40 bank accounts belonging to nine alleged "advocates." The victim, associated with an NGO, did not inform anyone at the time of the "digital arrest" but reported the matter to the police once he realised that he had been conned. During the investigation, police discovered suspicious transactions of ₹ nine crore in a bank account linked to the case. That account is also under scrutiny, Dwivedi said. Those arrested have been identified as Sachin, Prashant, Gautam Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Syed Saif, Aryan Sharma, and Pawan Yadav - all aged between 20 and 28 years. They have been booked under sections 318 (cheating), 319 (cheating by impersonation), 204 (impersonating a government official) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and sections 66(c) and 66(d) of the IT Act. All have been sent to jail, the police added. Uttar Pradesh Police has cautioned citizens against cyber frauds like digital arrest and asked them to report any such experiences to their nearest police station or on the dedicated helpline number 1530.

According to Atishi, 60 lakh vehicles—40 lakh two-wheelers and 20 lakh large vehicles—will be removed from the national capital's roads because of the fuel ban. 'The common people of Delhi use two-wheelers to go to work. What will the owners of 40 lakh two-wheelers do? How will they go to work?' the former chief minister said. Calling the fuel ban 'archaic and baseless', Atishi said the BJP was causing trouble to the residents of the capital, 'There are many senior citizens in the city who use secondhand vehicles just to get groceries from the market and come back. What will they do now?' Atishi questioned the rationale behind the fuel ban. 'There is no proven relation between the age of the vehicle and the levels of pollution caused. If vehicles are maintained properly, they won't cause pollution,' she said. Alleging a nexus between the BJP and big vehicle manufacturers, Atishi said, 'Today I challenge the BJP to inform the people about the amount of donation they received from these companies.' On the first day of the fuel ban, 350 teams, including from Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the transport department, were stationed 24×7 across the 498 petrol pumps in the capital on Tuesday. While 80 vehicles were seized, 98 people whose vehicles could not be impounded were issued notices on Tuesday, an officer from the Delhi transport department stated. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed to scan number plates of vehicles and instantly cross-check their details against data registered in the Union government's VAHAN portal. If the vehicle is flagged as an ELV or lacks a valid pollution under control certificate, an audio alert is sent to the petrol pump operator.
