Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman among speculated names for BJP's top post
NEW DELHI: Amid growing speculation over the new BJP national president, the names of three women leaders — including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman — have suddenly emerged alongwith other prominent figures such as Bhupendra Yadav, Dharmendra Pradhan, Manohar Lal Khattar, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Pralhad Joshi, and others. Though many senior BJP leaders have not firmly backed the likelihood of any one of the three women being chosen for the top post, the names currently in circulation include former Andhra Pradesh BJP chief Daggubati Purandeswari — often referred to as the "second Sushma Swaraj"— Vanathi Srinivasan (currently the national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha), and Nirmala Sitharaman, the current Finance Minister. Sources have indicated that Purandeswari may not be eligible, as she has not yet completed 15 years in the party following her defection from the Congress — a requirement according to the BJP's constitution, which mandates that a candidate for the national president post must have been a primary member for at least 15 years. However, the party may make an exception in her case. Vanathi Srinivasan, widely recognised within the organisation for the numerous outreach programmes conducted by the Mahila Morcha across the country is another highly placed candidate. However, a key drawback in her case is the limited fluency in the Hindi language, which is considered essential for the role.

Haryana: Saini lauds women's contribution during Emergency
Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday said that women endured atrocities during the Emergency at par with Loktantra Senanis and bravely withstood that period, asserting that their contribution as 'guardians of democracy' will never be forgotten. Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini being felicitated during a women's mock parliament organised by BJP Mahila Morcha, in Gurugram on Saturday. (PTI) Saini made the remarks while addressing a women's mock parliament organised at Gurugram University to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. According to an official statement, the chief minister observed the proceedings of the mock parliament and paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of women during the Emergency. He also honoured several Loktantra Senanis, including state president of the Loktantra Senani Sangathan Mahavir Bhardwaj, SB Gupta, and Shrichand Gupta, for their role in standing up against the then government's actions. Saini said that the Emergency was imposed despite the absence of political instability or natural disaster, accusing the Congress government of enforcing it out of 'selfishness and a narrow mindset'. 'The Emergency not only violated political rights but also launched a brutal assault on the freedom, dignity, and rights of women. Many women were jailed, their voices silenced, and they were confined to their homes, simply for speaking out against government injustice. It was a period when both democracy and women's dignity were severely suppressed,' Saini said. He alleged that the Constitution was 'trampled' during the Emergency and the nation was turned into a prison to protect the interests of a single family. Saini credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising the sacrifices of those who resisted the Emergency, stating that the prime minister had made efforts to bring their stories into the public discourse. Calling for dignity in parliamentary proceedings, Saini urged the opposition to contribute constructively and ensure a smooth functioning of the House in the national interest. He also congratulated the BJP Mahila Morcha, Haryana, for organising the mock parliament and said that the platform empowered women to lead discussions, ask questions, and present solutions.

"Will they apologise to the country for emergency?": Haryana CM Saini targets Congress
Gurugram (Haryana) [India], June 28 (ANI): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly misleading the public during election campaigns. He further questioned the party for failing to apologise for the Emergency and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Chief Minister made these remarks while addressing a 'State-level Mock Parliament' organised by the BJP Mahila Morcha, Haryana's Gurugram. He exhorted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has been functioning according to the Constitution. Addressing the event in Gurugram, CM Saini said, 'During elections, Yuvraj (Rahul Gandhi) picks up the holy Constitution book and campaigns that if Modi Ji becomes the Prime Minister, the Constitution will be abolished. Under Modi Ji's leadership, this country is running according to the Constitution...' 'I want to ask the Congress people, will you apologise to the country for the Emergency? You have not apologised to date. In 1984, a particular community was massacred, and no apology was made for that either. According to this holy Constitution, if anyone has tried to get them justice, it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' the Chief Minister added. In a post on X, Saini alleged that during the Emergency, people faced atrocities 'worse' than those under British rule and paid respects to all those who endured such suffering. The social media post reads, 'Gratitude to the maternal forces present at the 'State-level Mock Parliament' organized by BJP Mahila Morcha, Haryana, in the vibrant city of Gurugram, led by Guru Dronacharya!' 'During the Emergency, people faced atrocities worse than those under British rule; I pay my respects to all those who endured such suffering. In that era, there was neither instability in the country, nor any natural disaster, nor any earthquake. Solely for their selfish motives, the Congress government trampled upon the Constitution,' it added. Between 25 June 1975 and 21 March 1977, India was placed under a state of Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution. On 25 June 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. This was the third Emergency in India's history, but the first one declared in peacetime. Earlier proclamations were during wars with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971). (ANI)
