‘Naxalite-like act': BJP slams Cong over CM convoy attack

Guwahati: BJP in Assam has condemned the alleged incident in which a water bottle was thrown at CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's convoy in Golaghat, reportedly by Congress workers. The party claimed the act reflected "Naxalite-like behaviour" and alleged that the Congress has resorted to "Naxalite-like behaviour" after being unable to counter the BJP govt's politics of liberation and development BJP workers staged statewide protests on Wednesday in response. BJP state spokesperson Kalyan Gogoi said the act of Congress workers throwing a water bottle at the CM's convoy is an attack on democratic values and an act of political frustration. BJP's state general secretary Rituparna Baruah said, "Unable to counter the CM and the BJP's politics of liberation and development, the Congress has now resorted to Naxalite-like behaviour. It is shocking that even in opposition, the party can act in such an undemocratic way. Imagine what may happen if Congress comes to power." The BJP Yuva Morcha (BJYM) staged protest in all district and sub-divisional headquarters on Tuesday and Wednesday. Indian fishermen nabbed by Sri Lanka because their rights given up during Emergency: Jaishankar

NEW DELHI: The issue of Sri Lanka arresting Indian fishermen stems from an agreement during the Emergency under which their rights for fishing in some specific areas were given up, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. The agreement with Sri Lanka would not have been possible if a genuine Parliament functioned at that time, Jaishankar said at an event organised by the BJP Yuva Morcha to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. Katchatheevu, an uninhabited island was ceded to Sri Lanka by then Indira Gandhi regime in the country under a maritime agreement in 1974. Further, another agreement signed in 1976 restricted the fishermen of both countries from fishing in the other's exclusive economic zones. Jaishankar said big decisions were sometimes taken without any parliamentary debate during the Emergency period. "We hear about our fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka. The reason is that an agreement was entered into during Emergency under which the rights of the fishermen for fishing in some sea waters of Sri Lanka was abandoned," Jaishankar said. Had a genuine Parliament functioned at the time, there would have been a debate and this decision would not be accepted, the minister said. The consequences of this decision are still visible in Tamil Nadu, he added. Jaishankar said the image of India as the oldest and largest democracy in the world took a beating when the Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975. He also recalled his own experiences of police raids at hostels of the Jawaharlal Nehru University and his family's links with leaders like George Fernandes. "I heard from my seniors in the foreign service how difficult it was to defend India after the murder of the Constitution and democracy by the imposition of Emergency," he said.

"Some people keep the copy of Constitution in their pockets but have other feelings in their hearts," he said in a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He said people should be empowered to avoid any situation in the future because an empowered public would never let it happen.

Builder booked under MCOCA for repeatedly cheating homebuyers

NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a builder accused of repeatedly cheating homebuyers, following a fresh complaint filed earlier this month. Builder booked under MCOCA for repeatedly cheating homebuyers The accused, Ranjit Bhalchandra Naik, proprietor of Samarth Krupa Developers, was arrested on June 19 after a 51-year-old woman, Ahmadi Abdurabh Mulla, alleged that he defrauded her of ₹ 3.5 lakh on the pretext of offering a discounted flat and shop in Nerul. According to the complaint registered at Nerul police station on June 9, Naik not only failed to deliver the promised property but also allegedly threatened her when she demanded a refund. Police said Naik had offered the complainant a 950 sq. ft. flat and a 450 sq. ft. shop in the 'Shivam Classic' building at Sector 23, Darave, Nerul, for ₹ 45 lakh — significantly below market price. Mulla claimed to have made payments via cheque, online transfers, and cash between May 2023 and early 2024. During the investigation, officers discovered that Naik was a repeat offender, with at least four similar cheating cases already registered against him at the same police station. 'His repeated involvement in such cases indicated a pattern of organised criminal activity,' said a senior officer from Nerul police station. 'We submitted a proposal to invoke MCOCA to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-1, which was approved.' Naik was produced in court on Friday and remanded to four days of police custody. Originally affiliated with the BJP Yuva Morcha as its Navi Mumbai general secretary, Naik is no longer associated with the party. 'He had switched to the NCP during the last assembly elections,' clarified BJP Navi Mumbai president Dr Rajesh Patil. 'The Yuva Morcha unit was disbanded, but since the alleged offence occurred during his tenure, the party will fully cooperate with investigators if approached.' Police said the use of MCOCA reflects the organised and serial nature of the offences, enabling them to pursue stricter legal measures and deeper financial scrutiny. Investigations into the builder's dealings and potential other victims are ongoing.

'Pashchimbanga Divas' Row: BJP Accuses Police Of Blocking Rally, TMC Calls Celebration Forced

Last Updated: TMC accused the BJP of undermining the secular spirit of the Constitution, calling the celebration "politically motivated" The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, and the opposition BJP engaged in a political slugfest on Friday over the celebration of 'Pashchimbanga Divas'. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar accused Kolkata Police of obstructing the party's efforts to observe the day. Majumdar alleged that police tried to stop his two-wheeler rally from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road in south Kolkata. The BJP, following a central government notification, marks June 20 — the date in 1947 when the undivided Bengal Assembly voted for the partition of the state — as 'Pashchimbanga Divas'. Earlier this morning, BJP Yuva Morcha members gathered at the Bhowanipore residence of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the Jan Sangh founder, before planning to cycle and walk to Netaji Bhavan, about a kilometre away. Majumdar alleged, 'we told the police that we will only carry the Tricolour and no party flags in this rally. Even then the police obstructed our movement and arrested our workers." A small group, including Majumdar and state BJP Yuva Morcha chief Indranil Khan, later managed to reach Netaji's house and garland his bust. 'We failed to understand the police's logic behind this obstruction. This wasn't a political rally and our destination was Netaji's house which lies in the same ward as that of the residence of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. It is evident that we will either walk or reach there on motorcycles," Khan added. West Bengal Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari led legislators on a colourful march from the assembly to Dr Mukherjee's statue on Red Road, where they garlanded it and chanted slogans calling for enduring recognition of June 20 as 'Pashchimbanga Divas'. 'This is a historic day which we must observe," Adhikari said. The row centres on which date should be officially recognised as West Bengal Statehood Day. The ruling TMC government has declared Poila Baisakh — the Bengali New Year — as the statehood day, passing a resolution in the assembly. In response to the allegations, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed the BJP's actions as contrived. Ghosh said: 'The people of Bengal have already chosen their statehood day on the first day of the Bengali calendar. It's a day close to the hearts of all Bengalis. The state assembly has already endorsed it. It doesn't matter where a motley band of BJP workers gather and try to force a celebration which lacks spontaneity and with which the people have no direct association." West Bengal's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chatterjee accused the BJP of undermining the secular spirit of the Constitution, calling the celebration 'politically motivated". He said the Poila Baisakh resolution had already been endorsed by the state assembly and criticised the BJP's sudden interest in June 20.
