Can you hail a Grab EV outside KLIA? It's luck of the draw, but here's how
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — As the Grab EV service is only meant for KLIA Terminal 1 rides at the moment, we were originally under the impression that the Grab EV drivers have to come back to KLIA empty-handed once they have their passengers to the destination. As it turns out, that is not the case, as Grab EV drivers can pick up KLIA-bound customers when they head back to the airport. 'So, we don't want them to come back empty,' said Rashid Shukor, Director of Country Operations and Mobility of Grab Malaysia. Rashid pointed out that customers who booked the Standard 6-seater service might be able to obtain Grab EV's BYD M6 electric MPV, as long as their destination is KLIA. However, the M6 will be assigned randomly to customers just like any other 7-seater vehicle in the service. This is unlike in KLIA Terminal 1, whereby you can specifically choose between the Grab EV or the usual Standard 6-seater service. Aside from getting the BYD M6 as their ride, Grab EV customers also get to enjoy several perks, including having their pick-up point at Level 3, which is the same floor as the airport's arrival hall. For the Standard 6-seater customers, the pick-up point is located at Level 1 instead. In addition to that, there is also a dedicated waiting area in the form of the Grab EV Lounge near the pick-up point. That being said, the Grab EV service does cost slightly more than the Standard 6-seater option, although the fare differences depend on the destination. As a comparison, the Grab EV service costs RM28 more than its Standard 6-seater counterpart when we set our Bukit Bintang office as the destination. However, when we set Ayer@8 in Presint 8 of Putrajaya as the destination which is much closer to KLIA, the difference was only RM5. — SoyaCincau

Grab Malaysia unveils EV ride to KLIA
GRAB Malaysia on Tuesday launched its first fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) dedicated to airport transportation. This marks a significant step forward in the company's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, promote EV adoption, and contribute to Malaysia's Green Economy. The launch took place at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and was officiated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Available for passengers travelling from KLIA, the new EV ride option can be booked through the Grab app. The service features the BYD M6, a seven-seater electric MPV offering passengers a quieter, smoother ride experience. Grab is collaborating with ecosystem partners, BYD Sime Motors, Yinson GreenTech and Power-Up Tech to accelerate EV adoption in Malaysia as part of its commitment to supporting national sustainability goals and contribute to building a cleaner, greener future for the country. "By prioritising routes with high visibility and demand such as KLIA, we aim to demonstrate the practicality and comfort of EVs while driving greater awareness among consumers," said Grab Malaysia director of country operations and mobility Rashid Shukor. "This launch marks an important milestone in reshaping the DNA of on-demand public transport toward low or zero emission modes, making sustainable mobility more accessible for both our driver-partners and passengers. This supports our broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040," he added. Meanwhile, Loke said the ministry continued to champion sustainable transport solutions across all sectors. This is in line with the government's commitment to advancing low-carbon mobility through frameworks such as the National Transport Policy 2019-2030 and the ministry's Strategic Plan 2021-2025. "The launch of this EV fleet, ride option, and airport lounge at KLIA is a timely initiative that supports our national sustainability goals while enhancing the travel experience at one of Malaysia's key transport hub," he added.

This is part of Malaysia's broader initiative to increase the number of electric vehicles on the road and reduce transportation-related pollution. The service is a collaboration between Grab, BYD Sime Motors, Yinson GreenTech, and Power-Up Tech, showing how the government is working with private companies to make electric vehicles more accessible to ordinary Malaysians. Grab's leadership emphasised that they chose KLIA specifically because it's a high-traffic route where many people can experience electric vehicles firsthand. They want to show travellers that EVs are practical and comfortable for everyday use, not just a novelty. Grab Malaysia's Director of Country Operations and Mobility, Rashid Shukor, said his company is proud to support Malaysia's green mobility push with the introduction of an EV-only ride option for airport travellers. By prioritising routes with high visibility and demand, such as KLIA, we aim to demonstrate the practicality and comfort of EVs, while driving greater awareness among consumers. How the New EV Service Works Loke welcomed these private sector initiatives, saying such partnerships between companies and government are crucial for building public confidence in electric vehicle technology. BYD Sime Motors partners with Transport Ministry to drive EV adoption in Malaysia
IN a concerted effort to bolster electric vehicle (EV) adoption and support Malaysia's transition to low-carbon mobility, BYD Sime Motors has entered into a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Transport (MOT). This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to reducing carbon emissions through the wider use of EVs in both public and private sectors. The 'Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT' initiative is a six-month programme designed to offer Ministry personnel an immersive EV driving experience. Backed by Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd—a subsidiary of Gentari Sdn Bhd—two EV chargers have been installed at the MOT headquarters in Putrajaya to support the campaign. At the official launch ceremony held at the Ministry's complex, the partnership was inaugurated by Transport Minister YB Loke Siew Fook and Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Sime Motors. They were joined by Deputy Transport Minister YB Datuk Haji Hasbi Bin Habibollah, MOT Secretary General YBhg. Dato' Jana Santhiran Muniayan, General Manager of BYD Sime Motors Adeline Lew, and Izuan Hafiz, Head of Green Mobility MY-SG at Gentari. Through this initiative, BYD Sime Motors is providing the Ministry with its entire lineup of EVs–including the BYD Sealion 7, BYD Seal, BYD Atto 3 Ultra, BYD M6, and BYD Dolphin–on a temporary loan basis. The test drive programme gives MOT staff hands-on experience with these electric models, allowing them to better understand their technological advancements, performance capabilities, and day-to-day practicality. Jeffrey Gan expressed confidence that the initiative would spur a deeper appreciation for electric mobility within government ranks. He affirmed that BYD Sime Motors is proud to lead the charge alongside the Ministry of Transport in advancing the national low-carbon agenda. The experience, he noted, is designed to inspire greater EV uptake not just among the public but also within government vehicle fleets. The collaboration represents more than a showcase of EV models–it signals a broader step towards embedding sustainable transport practices within public sector operations. By encouraging firsthand interaction with EVs, the programme aims to inform policy decisions and promote institutional readiness for the adoption of clean mobility solutions. In support of this push, two 22kW AC chargers have been installed at the Ministry, reinforcing the role of public-private partnerships in developing Malaysia's EV infrastructure. Gentari, which currently operates over 530 charging points nationwide, plays a central role in achieving the government's ambitious target of 10,000 public chargers by 2025 as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap. This collaboration between BYD Sime Motors, the Ministry of Transport, and Gentari sets a precedent for future efforts to integrate electric vehicles into Malaysia's transport ecosystem. As the country intensifies its sustainability efforts, initiatives like Jom Pandu BYD Bersama MOT pave the way for a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.
