Grab Malaysia EV service launch boosts green mobility at KLIA
SEPANG: Grab Malaysia has launched its electric vehicle (EV) service for e-hailing, marking a significant step toward sustainable mobility in the country. The initiative, supported by the Transport Ministry, aims to enhance transportation quality at key entry points like Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in accelerating EV adoption nationwide. 'This initiative aligns with Malaysia's decarbonization goals under the National Transport Policy 2019-2030,' he said at the launch event.
Grab's new 'EV-only ride' option is now available in its app, catering to travelers seeking eco-friendly transport. The company also unveiled an EV Lounge at KLIA, providing added convenience for premium service users.
Loke highlighted KLIA's strategic role, noting its high passenger traffic and visibility for both domestic and international users. 'Expanding EV services beyond the Klang Valley to cities like Johor Bahru and Penang will further drive green mobility,' he added.
The government's support includes tax incentives for EV purchases, expanded charging infrastructure, and low-carbon zones in urban areas. Grab Malaysia's Rashid Shukor said the BYD M6 electric MPVs will offer passengers a quieter, smoother ride while promoting EV awareness.

Consumer group seeks clear guidelines on reporting reckless driving safely
David Chan KOTA KINABALU (June 28): The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Sabah Chapter) appreciates the recent remarks by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, encouraging the public to record and report incidents of reckless driving involving buses and lorries. This proactive call to public participation is commendable and timely, said chairman of the consumer group, David Chan. However, he said many responsible motorists have voiced valid concerns: 1. How can ordinary drivers safely take photos or record videos of dangerous bus or lorry drivers while driving without risking a traffic offence themselves? The public is uncertain whether such actions, even when done with good intentions, may violate traffic laws. 2. Use of Mobile Phones While Driving: It is well known that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) strictly prohibits the use of handphones while driving, and such usage may result in a summons or compound fine, as it poses serious risks to road safety. 3. Risk of Road Accidents: Attempting to photograph or record reckless drivers while in motion may distract motorists, potentially causing accidents or putting lives in danger, especially on highways or narrow roads. In light of the above, the National Consumer Foundation calls upon Loke and the Ministry of Transport to issue a clear guideline on: When and how the public can legally and safely capture footage of reckless commercial vehicle drivers; Whether dashcams and passenger-recorded videos are the recommended method for gathering such evidence; Whether such evidence will be officially accepted by JPJ and APAD for enforcement actions. 'We support the Transport Minister's call for public engagement in enhancing road safety. However, it must be done without compromising legal compliance or public safety. 'We urge the ministry to consider launching a nationwide awareness campaign, encouraging the use of safe recording tools such as dashcams and providing proper reporting channels such as a mobile app or online platform,' said Chan in a statement on Saturday. 'We believe consumer safety on Malaysian roads is a shared responsibility. While enforcement authorities must act firmly against rogue drivers and negligent transport operators, the public should be empowered — not penalized — for doing the right thing,' he added.

Five Malaysians have chosen to remain in Iran, says Foreign Minister
REMBAU: Five Malaysians, comprising four students and a businessman, have opted to stay in Iran despite Wisma Putra's advice to leave the country, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said they had each signed a letter of undertaking to remain in Iran despite the government's earlier call for all Malaysians to leave the country amid escalating conflict. "The evacuation process for Malaysians in Iran has been completed, with all returned home on June 21. I have ordered all Malaysians in Iran – most of whom are in Tehran – to return. However, four students are still staying there, namely three in Qom and one in Esfahan, while the other is a businessman. "They have signed a letter of undertaking and expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra, stating that they have chosen to stay (in Iran)...there are not many Malaysians in Iran," he told reporters after officiating the 52nd General Meeting of the Kaum Ibu Penajes Cooperative here on Saturday (June 28). It was previously reported that 24 individuals, including Malaysians, who were in Iran, had safely arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens and one Singaporean national. Meanwhile, Mohamad said Malaysia would forge collaboration with Indonesia to explore economic development in the maritime border area between Malaysia and Indonesia in Ambalat. He said that although the area involved was still under negotiation between the two countries, Malaysia did not want this resource-rich region to become a liability or be neglected. "Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto came close to reaching an agreement. The technical committee is now tasked with promptly identifying ways to finalise the deal so both countries can benefit from the natural resources there. "The form of cooperation to be undertaken may be in the form of joint development, similar to that in the Gulf of Siam, Thailand. Although it is an overlapping area, we share common interests in developing the region," he said. On Friday (June 27), Anwar and Prabowo expressed the strong commitment of both countries to accelerate strategic cooperation in various fields, including joint development in the maritime border area of Malaysia and Indonesia in Ambalat in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner. – Bernama
