Panel of 7 to now draft Haryana Sikh gurdwara body's '25-'26FY budget

Kurukshetra: A newly formed seven-member subcommittee has now been given the responsibility of preparing the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) budget for 2025-26 financial year. The announcement was made by HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda at the Kurukshetra HQ of the state Sikh body Thursday. He said the decision to form this committee was taken unanimously by the General House after the proposed Rs 104 crore budget was rejected due to significant gaps and the omission of several key points. The new committee will include representatives from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), and the HSGMC's own auditor to ensure financial transparency. Jhinda said that audits will be conducted for the periods of 2014-2020, which was under his previous leadership, followed by the remaining years. To maintain accountability, all gurdwaras under HSGMC's jurisdiction have been directed to display their monthly expenditures and financial records publicly on notice boards, ensuring the Sikh congregation has access to all financial information. Meanwhile, Baljit Singh Daduwal, chairman of HSGMC's Dharam Prachar committee, expressed strong objection to a govt advertisement that referred to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as "Veer Banda Bairagi". Speaking on the martyrdom anniversary of the revered Sikh general, Daduwal emphasised that the correct name — Baba Banda Singh Bahadur — must always be used in official communications. A resolution demanding a correction has been passed by the General House, and a formal letter will be sent to the Haryana govt, he said. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Daduwal commended Jhinda for observing it as a "Black Day," highlighting the oppression faced by Sikh leaders during that period. He also congratulated Harmeet Singh Kalka on his re-election as president of DSGMC. On the arrest of Bikram Singh Majithia, he said if the current Punjab govt acts unlawfully, it will be opposed, and that justice must prevail based on facts.

‘Grave insult': Akal Takht head, SGPC object to Haryana govt ads referring to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as ‘Veer Banda Bairagi'

The acting Jathedar of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, on Wednesday issued a statement condemning the Haryana government for referring to Sikh warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as 'Veer Banda Bairagi' in its public advertisements issued to commemorate his martyrdom day. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was a Sikh commander of the Khalsa army who liberated a large part of North India from Mughal rule and established the Khalsa rule in Punjab. His martyrdom day is observed on June 25. 'The Sikh community must remain alert to anti-Sikh narratives. The Haryana government must be made aware of the facts through coordination by Sikhs in the state,' Gargaj said in his statement. He also asked the Sikh community to take serious note of what he termed a distortion of Sikh identity and urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to ensure coordination with Sikh representatives in Haryana on the matter. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami also expressed strong objection to the reference. 'This is not only a violation of Sikh principles, but also a grave insult to the life and martyrdom of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur,' Dhami said. 'Referring to him as 'Veer Banda Bairagi' deeply hurts Sikh sentiments. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur became an initiated Sikh under the guidance of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He renounced the Bairagi identity and led the Khalsa in battle against the Mughal Empire,' he added. Dhami also highlighted Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's role in establishing the first Sikh rule and abolishing the feudal land system. 'He granted land rights to farmers, which marked a significant step toward social equality,' Dhami stated. 'This appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine Sikh identity and misrepresent Sikh history,' he said, demanding that the Haryana government stop issuing such advertisements and take strict action against those responsible. The Haryana government is yet to respond.

Public pressure awakens AAP's Mann govt from deep slumber

After years of neglect and repeated pleas, it was ultimately the efforts of local residents and religious volunteers that spurred the Punjab government into action. The long-deteriorated road from Chhappar Chiri Khurd to Chhapar Chiri Kalan —leading to the historic Gurdwara Sri Fateh Jang Sahib, built in the memory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's legendary Chappar Chiri battle against the Mughal Empire— has finally seen the beginning of renovation. The restoration work began on Saturday, thanks to the initiative of village residents, social workers, and prominent Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parvinder Singh Sohana. Following their efforts, the Punjab government Sunday officially commenced work on the road from the Kharar side. Welcoming the government's delayed yet decisive action, Sohana said, 'The government has finally woken up from its deep slumber. It's a praiseworthy move to allocate Rs 3.77 crore for the upgradation of the road leading to such a significant historical and religious site. 'Better late than never.' He added that the government's response only came after community members themselves began road repair work from Chhapar Chiri Kalan side. 'Only after the sangat, with our support, started the work yesterday did the government take notice. They have now acknowledged the issue and taken responsibility,' he said. Highlighting the urgency, Sohana stated that the annual Fateh Diwas is celebrated every May, and this year, the nagar kirtan is scheduled to begin from this location on May 12, en route to Fatehgarh Sahib. 'Considering the heavy footfall during these events, we started the roadwork on our own yesterday with the support of local panchayats and sangat,' he said. He said that numerous appeals had been made to the government earlier, but no action was taken until now. The SAD leader criticised the poor condition of link roads throughout the Mohali constituency. 'The state of all link roads in the Mohali area is deplorable. The government must now pay serious attention to infrastructure development so the public can get much-needed relief — and the administration can begin to fulfil its promises,' he said.
