Egypt FM urges halt to Israeli aggression on Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty urged the international community on Thursday to assume its role in stopping the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, during a phone call with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot. Both ministers discussed the latest regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. They stressed the importance of resuming the ceasefire and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian and relief aid amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip. According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty highlighted the intensive efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the US to achieve a swift and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. He also stressed the need to achieve a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian cause through the implementation of the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Furthermore, the two sides addressed the postponed UN two-state solution conference in New York. The conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, was initially scheduled to be held on 17-20 June, but was delayed indefinitely due to the Israel-Iran war. During the call, both ministers agreed on the importance of Iran and Israel fully committing to the ceasefire. They emphasized the importance of taking practical and concrete steps that contribute to de-escalation and pave the way for political and diplomatic solutions. Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Tamim Khallaf, said that during a phone call on Thursday, the two ministers discussed recent developments in Gaza, following the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel. During the telephone conversation, they addressed key regional developments and explored avenues to further strengthen ties between Egypt and France. Abdelatty highlighted the genuine efforts spearheaded by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to swiftly secure a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring the critical role of the international community in halting Israeli aggression in both Gaza and the West Bank. The ministers also addressed the issue of Palestinian state recognition, Barrot updated his Egyptian counterpart on preparations for the upcoming high-level international conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, which aims to promote a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the implementation of the two-state solution. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's firm commitment to a just and sustainable solution, grounded in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital. They also followed up on the outcome of the Polish foreign minister's visit to Cairo in April that underscored the importance of continuing bilateral frameworks, such as the Joint Economic Committee. Abdelatty praised Poland's EU Council presidency and its support for Egypt within EU institutions. He also expressed Egypt's aspiration to advance bilateral ties to broader horizons, especially given the close relationship between the two presidents and peoples. The call comes two days after President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a phone conversation to discuss escalation in the region, enhancing bilateral relations, and regional issues of mutual concern. Israel-Iran war Moreover, both foreign ministers welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel announced by the US president on Tuesday. They also stressed the importance of both sides adhering to the agreement to contain the recent regional escalation and pave the way for political and diplomatic solutions. The US and Israel are still in the assessment phase of the damage inflicted upon Iranian nuclear sites resulting from the 12-day war between Israel and Iran. FM Abdelatty emphasized the importance of preserving security and stability in all Libyan territories, safeguarding state institutions, and respecting Libya's unity and territorial integrity. He also stressed the need to hold simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections and dismantle armed militias to help restore security and stability in the country. On Tuesday, Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa, the chief of staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, met with visiting Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar, the chief of staff of the Libyan Army's Ground Forces, and his accompanying delegation to discuss deepening military cooperation. During their meeting, they discussed several issues of mutual interest and explored ways to strengthen cooperation between the armed forces of both countries in various military and security fields. According to a statement from foreign ministry spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the call on June 24 involved an exchange of views on developments in Libya, Sudan, and the Great Lakes region. Regarding Libya, Abdelatty emphasised the need to preserve security and stability throughout all Libyan territories, safeguard the state's resources, and respect its unity and territorial integrity. He also stressed the importance of dismantling armed militias to help restore security and stability in the country. On the Sudanese crisis, the foreign minister affirmed Egypt's firm position in support of Sudan, stressing the importance of preserving its unity, stability, national institutions, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He noted Egypt's keenness to engage positively with regional and international efforts aimed at reaching an immediate ceasefire to end the humanitarian suffering faced by the Sudanese people. The spokesperson added that the call also addressed the situation in the Great Lakes region. Abdelatty welcomed US efforts that led to the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda signing a declaration of principles in Washington. The declaration aims to achieve peace, stability, and economic development in the eastern DRC. The minister stated that this step is an important development towards reaching a lasting peace agreement that enhances the chances for regional stability in the Great Lakes region and the African continent. He added that this is consistent with the efforts of President Trump to advance peace and the peaceful settlement of disputes in the Middle East and Africa.
