1 2 Berhampur: Authorities of MKCG Medical College and Hospital here have formed a five-member committee to inquire into accusations of referral of an accident victim to a private hospital by an assistant professor, where he succumbed to his injuries allegedly due to negligent treatment. The committee held its first meeting on Thursday to investigate the complaints of the family members of the deceased. "The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, where the panel wants to hear from both sides," said Durga Madhab Satapathy, MKCG superintendent. Balaram Gouda, 28, of Baghalati, was rushed to MKCG after he sustained injuries in a bike accident near Mahuda on July 10. He was first treated in the emergency ward, and then, on the advice of a senior doctor of the orthopaedic department, they admitted him to a private hospital. As the patient's condition worsened after surgery, he was referred to another private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He succumbed to his injuries on the way on July 13. Family members alleged that Balaram died due to the referral to a private hospital. Balaram's brother lodged an FIR at Baidyanathpur police station against the doctor and urged the medical college authorities to take action against him. Several villagers, including family members of Balaram, also staged a demonstration in front of the Berhampur SP's office and MKCG superintendent's office, demanding removal of touts and compensation of Rs 2 crore. "We will take action as per the recommendations of the committee," said Satapathy. Suchitra Parida, inspector in-charge, Baidyanathpur police station, said they have registered a case against the doctor and launched an inquiry.

1 2 Digha: A day after Rath Yatra, the festive fervour continues in Digha as the seaside town is now gearing up to host Ulta Rath or the return journey of the deities from the 'Masir Bari' or the old Jagannath temple. On July 5 — the Ulta Rath day — hotels are hoping for fresh tourist influx. Though the deities are currently in Masir Bari, a large queue of devotees visited the newly-constructed Jagannath temple on Saturday. They offered prayers to the stone idol permanently installed there. Bipradash Chakraborty, joint secretary of Digha Sankarpur Hoteliers Association, said booking for Ulta Rath had already started. "The hotels and guest houses near the temple are in high demand. We expect that about 70% odd bookings will be completed by Wednesday. Usually, summer and winter vacations are the peak seasons for the hotel industry in Digha. This year, Ratha Yatra has become a new boost for our industry, and we are preparing for an influx of devotees from different states during Ulta Rath." Radharaman Das, a trustee of Digha Jagannath Dham and vice-president of ISKCON Kolkata, said 'Chappanbhog' was being offered to the deities five times daily at the temple. "Additionally, regular rituals are being performed at Masir Bari around 750 metres from the main temple, where the wooden idols have been kept in chariots. We expect footfall of 70,000 to one lakh devotees at the temple daily until Ulta Rath." A local tour operator in Digha stated, "We have been running package tours covering Puri and Digha for a long time. This tour has gained momentum due to the chariot festival, as many people will travel to Digha from Puri for Ulta Rath." Sonia Das, a Garia resident, stated, "The maiden chariot festival of Digha has generated great excitement among people like us. Some of us formed a group in the neighbourhood and travelled to the seaside town. Another group of our neighbours is scheduled to arrive at Digha for Ulta Rath." Meanwhile, police are implementing a three-tier security system in the town keeping in mind the anticipated rush of devotees. Dibakar Das, SDPO of Contai, stated, "Additional security measures are being implemented throughout Digha for the return journey. Focus is also on the beach area." Some devotees have also planned to visit Puri on Ulta Rath.

HYDERABAD As part of its efforts to help aspirants preparing for the Civil Services Examination from Telangana, the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) has invited online applications from those who have cleared the Prelims recently, for the ₹1 lakh each financial assistance scheme introduced by the company last year with its Corporate Social Responsibility fund. Chairman and Managing Director of SCCL N. Balaram said on Friday that the Rajiv Gandhi Civils Abhaya Hastham scheme launched last year had achieved encouraging results. This year, children of SCCL workers who cleared Prelims would also receive ₹1 lakh each assistance. Last year, 140 candidates, not the children of SCCL workers, who cleared the Prelims were extended the ₹1 lakh each financial assistance. Of them, 20 went on to qualify for the Mains and were selected for the Interviews. An additional ₹1 lakh each was provided to those who were selected for the Interviews and among them, seven candidates had successfully cleared the Civil Services Examination, Mr. Balaram said. The SCCL is inviting applications in the hope that more candidates would succeed and go on to serve the State and the country, Mr. Balaram said, advising the aspirants to visit the SCCL website at to apply online for the financial assistance, starting from June 23.

1 2 Digha: Lord Jagannath will make his last public appearance on Wednesday during the royal bathing ceremony, 'Snan Yatra', ahead of his fortnight-long seclusion. The Jagannath Temple in Digha has erected a special pavilion, where idols of Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra will undergo ceremonial bath. The temple doors will next open on June 26, on the eve of Rath Yatra. Preparations are underway under the supervision of Iskcon Kolkata vice-president Radharamn Das. He said, "The ceremony will start at 9 am. The rituals will begin at 10.30 am and the bathing will take place at 11 am. If there is a large gathering, the temple doors will remain open for darshan even after the scheduled time," he said. — Suman Mandal
