Mobile phones, gold chains stolen during Hyderabad's Balkampet temple festival; 15 cases reported in 12 hours
Representative Image HYDERABAD: Miscreants took advantage of the large crowds at the Balkampet Yellamma temple festival and kalyanotsavam on Tuesday, with more than 15 thefts reported in under 12 hours. The stolen items included mobile phones, gold chains, and purses-most of them belonging to women. Despite police deploying 600 personnel and installing 100 CCTV cameras for round-the-clock surveillance, several thefts occurred during the event. Additional security measures included the deployment of officers from the task force, central crime station, Special Branch (in plain clothes), and Armed Reserve to ensure the safety of devotees. According to Hyderabad police, at least 10 women lost their mobile phones, while several others lost jewellery. A couple from Ameenpur reported the theft of a three-tola gold chain, a ride-sharing app employee lost his mobile phone, while a retired RTC employee reported the theft of his gold chain and purse. Thousands witness celestial wedding of Renuka Yellamma at Balkampet
Hyderabad: The celestial Kalyanotsavam of Sri Renuka Yellamma Ammavaru at Balkampet was grandly held on Tuesday. The Kalyanam was held at 11.55 am. The Endowments Minister Konda Surekha offered silk clothes to the goddesses. Kalyanam is orgainsed on the first Tuesday of Ashada Masam. The devotees were lined up before the temple from 5 am on Tuesday. The temple authorities organised queue lines and VIP entries. A large number of devotees and Shiva Sattulu thronged to the temple premises to witness the wedding. The rush was so huge that it took five hours for the devotees to have darshan. The Kalyanotsavam are taken up for three days. On the first day there will be 'Edurukolu', Kalyanam on second day and Rathotsavam on the third day. Minister Konda Surekha said that Balkampet Yellamma is the deity who relieves the sufferings of the people of Hyderabad. She reminded that there was a buzz of Bonalu in the areas around Hyderabad during the month of Ashadham. The minister said that the Bonalu culture came during a time when a pandemic was raging here in the past. It is the belief of the people here that when a disaster struck the great city of Hyderabad and hundreds of people were dying, Balkampet Yellamma saved the lives of many people by protecting them. She said that the Bonalu festival has become a great celebration for the people here. The Minister said that this time, the government led by CM A Revanth Reddy allocated Rs 20 crores and ensured that there was no problem anywhere. He reminded that lakhs of devotees come to see the goddess every year... All arrangements have been made for that. She said that she was very lucky to have the opportunity to offer silk clothes to the goddess on behalf of the state government. She prayed to the goddess for good rains and good health for the crops. The traffic police imposed traffic restricts on the Balkampet road. The city police commissioner CV Anand supervised the arrangements. He inspected the control room and cctv surveillance center and accessed overall preparedness to ensure effective crowd management and public safety. Hyderabad In-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Rajya Sabha member Anil Kumar Yadav, City Mayor Gadwala Vijayalakshmi, Hyderabad Collector Hari Chandana and others participated in this program.

PD Act will be invoked against encroachers, warns Surekha
HYDERABAD: Endowments Minister Konda Surekha on Thursday warned that the Preventive Detention Act (PD Act) will be invoked against those who encroach upon land belonging to temples and the Endowments department. The minister, on the request of local leaders, inspected the allegedly encroached lands in Chengicherla in Medchal-Malkajgiri district. Later speaking to reporters, the minister said that a total of 30.23 acres in three survey numbers in Chengicherla belonging to the Endowments department and a few individuals have been occupied since 2022. 'After conducting a survey, the authorities confirmed that this land belongs to the Endowments department. We have ordered an inquiry. After receiving the survey report, the government will take appropriate action,' she said while instructing the officials to erect a fence around the land to protect it. The officials informed her that out of a total of 91,827 acres of land belonging to the Endowments department, close to 6,000 acres of land is under encroachment. Later in the day, the Endowments minister made a surprise visit to the Balkampet Yellamma temple to inspect the arrangements being made for the upcoming annual kalyana mahotsavam of Goddess Yellamma.
