Ballito obstacle course racer ready for international challenge

Ballito's Aristo Nolan is heading to Sweden to represent South Africa at the 2025 Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) World Championships. Organised by Swedish Athletics in collaboration with Tough Viking, the championship will take place in Gothenburg from September 11 to 14, drawing elite athletes from 140 nations. Competitors will tackle challenging terrain and endurance-testing obstacles. Nolan (28), a seasoned athlete and founder of Taurus Performance, earned his place on the South African national team after three years of dedicated training and regular podium finishes at elite competitions. 'I've always loved trail and cross country running but needed something more challenging. So, OCR was right up my alley,' he said. The former amateur rugby player will take on two events: The 3km elite short course featuring roughly 20 obstacles and the 12km standard course with around 40 obstacles. 'This is more than a race,' said Nolan, who also serves as Head of Strength and Conditioning at Umhlali Preparatory School. 'It's a chance to make our country and community proud.' Beyond his athletic achievements, Nolan is a qualified sports scientist and mentor, known for his commitment to youth development through sport. He also coaches the Ballito Dolphins rugby teams and continues to inspire the next generation of athletes locally and beyond. Nolan credited his sponsors for making this journey possible, including Rewilding Southern Africa, Taurus Performance, Yowie Fitness and On The Move. 'These brands have gone above and beyond to support my journey. Their belief in me and in this sport means everything.' Training across Sugar Rush Park's rugged tracks, Holla Trails' varied terrain and The Training Ground at Linc has provided the ideal OCR preparation. 'These spaces are my training home,' said Nolan. 'Every sprint, every grip rep and every lift has been part of a bigger goal.' 'I am going to give it my all, physically, mentally and emotionally. Representing South Africa is an honour, and I will be leaving it all out there in Sweden.' Stay in the loop with The North Coast Courier on Facebook, X, Instagram & YouTube for the latest news. Junior cycling trio from Ballito dominate Amashova race

Young Ballito cyclists Josh Johnson and Madison Bateson led the charge at Sunday's Amashova National Classic, each taking top honours in their age categories over 106km. Daniel van der Watt (21), also from Ballito, cruised to the men's 132km title in 3:24:00 to give the North Coast three winners on the day. Johnson (17) claimed the U19 title in a fiercely contested field, while Bateson (15) powered to victory in the U17 division with an excellent time of 2:54:07 in Durban. Johnson clocked in his winning time at 02:18:10, earning the junior yellow jersey and R1 500 in prize money. Johnson also placed an impressive fifth overall out of 1 457 male riders. The Amashova, one of South Africa's most renowned road races, challenges cyclists with a demanding route inspired by the Comrades Marathon. This year, more than 3 500 riders competed across four distances – 38km, 65km, 106km and 132km – as part of the race's 39th edition. The race started at Pietermaritzburg City Hall, winding through the Midlands and Valley of a Thousand Hills before finishing under the Masabalala Yengwa Pedestrian Bridge in Durban. 'Winning the age group race is a good outcome,' said Johnson. This marked Johnson's first race against South Africa's elite riders since returning from Europe. Although he narrowly missed an overall podium finish, he was pleased with his performance. 'A strong pace was set early to test the rest of the field. I wanted to make a move but mistimed it, so I settled into the following bunch and aimed for a podium position.' Johnson, who also won the U17 Amashova title in 2023, recently became the first African rider to join the prestigious U19 development team of World Tour outfit Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. Home-schooled and regularly training in Europe, Johnson credits his family and friends for their unwavering support in helping him achieve his goals. 'Road racing has given me the opportunity to turn my passion into a career, and I am determined to make it to the highest level,' he said. Errin Mackridge (18) – Another Ballito DriveTrain Academy rider – also impressed, finishing second in the women's U19 106km category in a time of 2:57:20. Ballito residents warned of indecent exposure by young man

Ballito residents have been warned to be on the lookout for a young man who has been indecently exposing himself to women in the popular KwaZulu-Natal north coast town. Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW), on its Facebook page on Monday, issued an alert about 'unfortunate incidents of indecent exposure' in the town. The body said it had received two reports about a white male, believed to be in his early 20s, who has been exposing himself to women. 'In the first incident a female jogger had passed the Boathouse when the driver of a white Toyota Aygo with GP plates stopped and asked for directions. He then exposed himself to her before driving away.' In a separate incident two holidaymakers aged about 16 and 20, were walking on the boardwalk on Saturday when they were confronted by the man. 'When they got close to Clarke Bay, a young, clean-cut white male exposed himself to the women.' BNW appealed to women to 'report immediately if you fall prey to this person'. The body also posted an image of the man from behind walking on the boardwalk. 'If you happen to know who this man is, please contact the authorities immediately. The lack of respect for females in our town is definitely not something that will be tolerated.' BNW did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Public indecency can lead to a fine of up to R4,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, according to the Sexual Offences Act. Public indecency is a common law crime, not always specified by legislation but rather determined by court rulings. The severity of the act and circumstances influence the sentence. According to Psychology Today, a publication that focuses on psychology matters and human behaviour, 'exhibitionistic disorder is a condition marked by the urge, fantasy or act of exposing one's genitals to non-consenting people, particularly strangers. 'People with exhibitionistic disorder may have a preference to show their genitals to prepubescent children, adults or both. Some people may deny they show their genitals to unsuspecting others or deny the act causes them distress. If they have exposed themselves repeatedly to non-consenting people, they may receive a diagnosis of exhibitionistic disorder.' TimesLIVE
