4 Malaysian immigration officers at JB-Singapore checkpoint arrested over 'flying passport' scheme, Malaysia News

Four enforcement officers at Malaysia's Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex were nabbed for allegedly accepting bribes in what authorities call a "flying passport" scheme. The term refers to when a person's passport is carried across the border by a third party and stamped without the holder being physically present. The passports are later returned to the owners, who had entered Malaysia illegally. This allows them to bypass immigration processes, reported The Star. The officers are suspected of receiving RM3,000 (S$910) in bribes, according to the New Straits Times (NST). The two main suspects were detained during an unannounced inspection at the checkpoint on Friday (July 25). Another two were arrested for allegedly abetting the scheme on Saturday. BSI CIQ Commander Roszita Dim said the two are a 31-year-old officer and a 49-year-old supervisor, reported Bernama. During the operation, authorities found suspicious data entries linked to the ID of an officer manning a car zone counter, including records of foreigners identified as problematic visitors that would need to be manually corrected. About RM2,800 in cash were found at the car clearance counter, and 14 foreign passports stashed in a bag hidden in the ceiling of another counter. Two mobile phones were reportedly seized from the officer at the car counter, and another two from the motorcycle zone supervisor. "Initial investigations suggest that the cash and mobile phones are linked to bribery transactions involving the 'flying passport' scheme," NST quoted a source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission as saying. The suspects allegedly received around RM200 for each passport stamped. [[nid:720102]]

Find out what's new on ST website and app. The strike involved drivers from a Malaysian bus company and took place at around 6.30am. JOHOR BAHRU - An early morning strike by bus drivers ferrying passengers across the Causeway led to disruptions at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) on July 21. State works, transportation, infrastructure, and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed that the strike involved drivers from a local bus company and took place around 6.30am. The drivers refused to transport passengers into Singapore, but the strike concluded by 8am. 'During the strike, to ensure that travellers could continue their journey into the island republic, we arranged for other buses to transport passengers,' Mr Fazli said. However, he acknowledged that some travellers opted to walk across the Causeway into Singapore. The exact number of people walking or drivers involved in the strike remains unknown. Mr Fazli, who is also the Bukit Pasir assemblyman, stated that the bus company and driver representatives have been urged to resolve their issues. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'God willing, there will not be any disruption to the bus service operation within BSI,' he added. It is understood that the drivers' protest was allegedly due to a wage cut imposed by the company, causing dissatisfaction among employees. The bus company serves thousands of daily commuters using public transport to travel between Malaysia and Singapore across the Causeway. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Partial autogate operations restored at Johor CIQs after nationwide glitch

JOHOR BARU: Several autogates at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) have resumed operations following a nationwide system disruption affecting entry and exit points. Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said as of 6pm today, 26 out of 68 autogates at BSI and three out of 12 at KSAB were back in service. "Traffic congestion at both CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine) complexes is currently under control, based on monitoring conducted this evening," he said. Manual counters were activated to ease the congestion after the system malfunction, which began around 1pm yesterday, he added. "The disruption is a nationwide issue, and relevant agencies are actively working to resolve it at both BSI and KSAB," he said. He also confirmed that ongoing monitoring is being carried out to ensure smooth traffic flow at both complexes. The automated gate system outage affecting foreign visitors at key national entry points was reportedly caused by a data integration issue that slowed down cross-verification processes within the MyIMMS immigration system. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) said the disruption led to long queues and congestion at several major locations, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2, as well as at BSI and KSAB CIQs. The agency clarified that Malaysian passport holders were not affected by the disruption and that the Immigration Department has taken immediate action to address the issue. – BERNAMA
