Greens candidate Hannah Thomas suffers facial injuries after wild Belmore Palestine protest
A former Greens candidate who took on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come away with graphic injuries after a pro-Palestine protest descended into chaos. The unauthorised protest took place on Friday morning outside SEC Plating in Belmore, Sydney. Protesters claim the company provides components used in a class of jets operated by the Israeli Defence Force. NSW Police attempted to disperse the group, stating the protest was not authorised. 'Five people have been arrested following an unauthorised protest in Sydney's west this morning,' a police statement read. 'About 5.35am Friday, officers attached to Campsie Police Area Command attended Lakemba Street, Belmore. 'Police issued a move on direction to a group of about 60 protesters, who allegedly attempted to block pedestrian access to the business. 'A 26-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were subsequently arrested after allegedly failing to comply with the direction. 'During the 35-year-old woman's arrest, she sustained facial injuries and was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment.' The injured woman has been identified as Hannah Thomas, who challenged Mr Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler at the election earlier this year. A video recorded by one of the protesters captures a confrontation between police officers and several attendees. In the footage, some protesters can be heard shouting, 'let go of her.' A woman wearing a black coat is from the group and at one moment she appears to fall to the ground alongside a police officer. An officer is heard instructing, 'Get up now,' to which the woman responds, 'I'm trying.' It is not clear if the woman who is taken away in the video is Ms Thomas. A photo taken after the incident appears to show Ms Thomas standing next to an officer with visible swelling around her eye. A source has confirmed with NewsWire that Ms Thomas has undergone initial surgery and her vision may be impacted. A joint statement from the Greens said NSW Police had 'violently attacked and assaulted protesters' at the 'peaceful picket … leaving one woman with serious facial injuries and arresting multiple demonstrators'. 'SEC Plating reportedly is involved in providing plating services for various parts used in F-35 jets,' the statement reads. 'The State of Israel's fleet of around 40F-35 rely on the global supply chain and supplement supply from countries like Australia to continue the genocide against the Palestinian people.' The statement says Peter O'Brien Lawyers has been engaged to represent Ms Thomas along with other protesters. Ms Thomas has not been charged with a crime, the police said. The police have charged a 29-year-old woman with refuse or fail to comply with direction, a 24-year-old man with larceny and goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, a 41-year-old man with using offensive language in or near public place or school and a 26-year-old man with refuse or fail to comply with directions and hinder or resist a police officer in the execution of duty. They were all granted conditional bail and will appear before Bankstown Local Court on July 15. Inquiries into the matter are ongoing, the police added. Rising Tide organiser Zack Schofield was arrested in the tussle and claimed the protest constituted 'legitimate political expression against genocide'. 'I witnessed the brutal assault against a community member this morning, someone who was lawfully expressing themselves in public, and it was sickening,' he said.

A former Greens candidate may lose sight in one eye after an incident at an anti-Israel protest in Sydney 's west. Hannah Thomas, 35, who recently ran against Anthony Albanese in the Sydney electorate of Grayndler, was photographed with a bruised and bloodied eye in Belmore on Friday morning. She had gathered with about 50 other protesters outside a Lakemba business accused by the Greens of supplying materials used by the Israeli military. The NSW Greens accused the business of 'reportedly [being] involved in providing plating services for various parts used in F-35 jets. 'The State of Israel's fleet of around 40 F-35 rely on the global supply chain and supplement supply from countries like Australia to continue the genocide against the Palestinian people,' it said in a statement on Friday morning. Police issued a move-on direction to the group at about 5.35am on Friday to disrupt the alleged unauthorised protest. Ms Thomas allegedly refused to comply with the order and sustained facial injuries during her arrest before being taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment. It is not clear exactly what caused Ms Thomas' injuries. Doctors are worried she may never regain sight in her injured eye, the Daily Telegraph reported. The NSW Greens said the extent of her injuries meant she may require facial reconstruction surgery. It said lawyers had been engaged to represent Ms Thomas and the other protesters who were arrested during the incident. Ms Thomas has attended anti-Israel protests in the past, having called on Australia to impose sanctions on Israel, whose government she accused of genocide. She was among dozens of demonstrators who descended on Albanese's electorate office to demand action after Greta Thunberg's 'Freedom Flotilla' was seized by Israeli defence forces earlier this month. A spokesperson for NSW Police told Daily Mail Australia Ms Thomas had not been charged following the incident. 'She sustained facial injuries while being arrested for allegedly failing to comply with a police direction and the arrest was discontinued and (she) was taken to Bankstown hospital for treatment,' they said. Four others were arrested and charged during the protest, including a 24-year-old man who was allegedly found in possession of a stolen police body-worn camera. Police said the camera was stolen by an unknown protester during a scuffle and was tracked to the 24-year-old's location. Greens MP Sue Higginson described the actions of police as 'brutal and excessive', before calling on NSW Premier Chris Minns to take accountability. Three men and a 29-year-old woman were taken to Campsie Police Station following their arrests. The 29-year-old woman was charged with refuse/fail to comply with direction under part 14 while the 24-year-old man was charged with larceny and goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not m/v). The 41-year-old man was charged with use offensive language in/near public place/school and the 26-year-old man was charged with refuse/fail to comply with direction under part 14 and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty. All four were granted conditional bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday July 15. Police said inquiries were ongoing.

Jubilant Bulldogs NRL fans who were caught in wild celebrations on social media have been accused of blocking traffic and harassing motorists as they partied after their win over arch-rivals Parramatta on Monday night. Coach Cameron Ciraldo's men continue to be the yardstick of the competition after 14 rounds - and their loyal supporters were in the mood to celebrate after they outclassed the Eels 30-12 at Accor Stadium. The fans are seen packing onto the street at Belmore in Sydney 's south-west in vision uploaded to TikTok and X. A motorbike and then a ute can be seen struggling to move through the sea of fans, the majority decked out in Canterbury's iconic blue and white colours. Daily Mail Australia understands the footage was taken from Burwood Rd in Belmore just before 7pm on Monday. A page on X known as NRL Silverback posted: 'Bulldogs fans are currently blocking traffic, harassing and assaulting motorists trying to drive through the streets. 'All this for beating the team in 2nd last?' It provoked an animated response on social media, with Bulldogs fans feeling the words were provocative. 'They are celebrating a win, nothing wrong with that. You can only beat who the NRL have you to play every week,' said one. A second asked: 'Where's the riot police? A third weighed in with: 'Loving the hate from (other) jealous supporters.' In a statement, NSW Police confirmed to Daily Mail Australia they were at the scene. 'Police were in attendance for crowd control but no issues occurred, there was no damage to property and zero assaults,' the statement read. At Accor Stadium, Lachlan Galvin made his long awaited debut for the Bulldogs, and the teenager became an instant cult hero after scoring a second half try. Galvin warmed the bench for nearly an hour, but once he was thrown into the fray he showed why he is likely to play in the halves for the remainder of 2025. 'When we looked at bringing him in immediately we probably thought he could fill a number of positions and he might be able to do that,' Ciraldo said post game. 'But he is predominantly a half and I thought he did a great job. 'The learning is not over, he has been here a week. He still has a lot to learn. 'But this has been a great start for him, we're really proud of him and he has fitted in great.'

Hey, Lachlan Galvin, here's the recipe for success to be an elite Canterbury half, from a premiership-winning one. 'When you're a Bulldog, it's a team first mentality … care about each other and prioritise the guy next to you more so than yourself. You'd do anything for the guy next to you.' That's the advice from Braith Anasta, who played five-eighth in Canterbury's last premiership-winning team in 2004, to former Tiger-turned-Bulldog Galvin. It was the mantra an 18-year-old Anasta adopted when he arrived in Belmore in 2000, which led him to a drought breaking grand final in the halves for the Dogs four years later. Now the fresh faced 19-year-old Galvin has the chance to do the same. 'For Lachie, if he buys into the culture and buys into the systematic way in which they're playing, doesn't try and overcomplicate things and really believes in the process and the coach, who's doing incredible things, then he won't have a problem,' he said. 'He'll fit in like a glove.' Anasta is glad Ciraldo has chosen to 'rip the band-aid off' and name Galvin straight for the King's Birthday clash on Fox League and Kayo against the Eels, the side the youngster ironically almost signed for. Parramatta will be out to show Galvin what he missed out on, the chance to play with one of the game's best playmakers in Mitchell Moses. But at Canterbury Anasta says Galvin will have the opportunity to make the No.7 jersey his own. 'They'd see him moving into the seven and Burton six, less disruption, and then kind of teaching Lachie the ways, the systems, the defensive patterns and getting his style more and getting it wrapped around his head,' Anasta said. But as much as the ex-Canterbury playmaker is thrilled by Galvin's arrival, the NRL 360 host can't help but put himself in the shoes of current halfback Toby Sexton who would feel been hard done by. 'He doesn't really deserve to be in this situation given how well he's played this year and where the dogs are coming. 'I feel sorry for him, but it's also a good opportunity and challenge for him at the same time.' Anasta, also a player agent to several halfbacks, says the highs for Galvin and lows of Sexton is just the reality of the rollercoaster that is rugby league. 'I've got Cameron Munster who's flying and playing Origin and playing great for Melbourne, and then I've got poor Lachie (Ilias) who's in a tough situation there with the Dragons trying to fight his way back in the first grade,' Anasta said. 'I know how emotionally tough it can be and the challenge that does present to these guys, so that's why I can really relate to Toby but at the same time I can relate to Lachie (Galvin) as well, a great opportunity, he's a young gun, he burst onto the scene, got all the clubs after him. He can go wherever he wants and he deserves that because he's put himself in that position.' Despite the Bulldogs and the Eels sitting at complete opposite ends of the ladder and Parramatta desperate for a win, Anasta says there's more riding on the game for the competition leaders. 'If the Dogs do come out now and lose one, two in a row, then the drums will start beating and we've all seen the external pressures of the media and fans and they don't want that,' he said. 'They want to come out, put a good performance in, get the win and they can move on from everything even quicker. It'd be probably a relief for them given the attention that this has received.'

Braith Anasta has warned that the Lachlan Galvin signing could disrupt the Bulldogs' momentum and will likely result in a major backline reshuffle. The 19-year-old's contract saga has dominated the rugby league news cycle for several weeks before it finally came to a head last week when he signed with the Bulldogs on around $750,000 a season. Many expected Galvin to make his debut in the Easter Monday clash against the Eels, but the teen phenom has instead been named outside the 17. Although a late change could be on the cards. But Anasta told that he believes Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has other ideas and instead representative centre and current Dogs five-eighth Matt Burton will shift to fullback, with Galvin handed the No. 6 jersey and fullback Connor Tracey playing off the bench or dropped to reserve grade. 'I think Galvin is a 5/8 not a halfback,' Anasta told 'I know many are saying he will play seven but the Galvin signing isn't a short-term play. Where he fits their system right now is tricky. 'I'm sure the Dogs would have spoken to him openly about where he could potentially play but there isn't an obvious spot for him to come into. I would think they will most likely give Sexton the next few weeks to see if he continues to knock it out of the park. 'If he does they have two options, play him (Galvin) off the bench for the year or if not I don't mind the idea of playing Burton at fullback. Image: Getty 'It doesn't mess up the team chemistry, Burton's kicking game isn't taken away by being at fullback, and of course that is tough for Tracey, but Burton fits the mould of the modern fullback arguably better. 'Fullbacks these days are runners, who are real ball players and it (playing fullback) would allow him to inject himself into the game as he likes. If it was up to me I'd be doing that before anything else so as to not interrupt the team as much. 'I could see them really having success with Burton at fullback along with Sexton and Galvin in that spine but again a lot of it really rides on Sexton.' If Galvin is to be a late inclusion, he will likely be met with a mixed reception from fans, coming up against the team he turned down, the Eels. While Tigers fans also feel aggrieved by his decision to exit the club and his return to the joint venture will almost certainly result in him being booed and jeered every time he touches the ball. That reaction is nothing new to Anasta, who in his playing career had a mixed reaction after he joined the Roosters, due to the fact he was a Rabbitohs junior. So ahead of Galvin's possible debut, the player-turned-Fox League pundit passed on some words of wisdom to the teenager. 'My words of wisdom with anything like this is you've made your decision now and have to just back yourself,' Anasta told Canterbury Bulldogs signing Lachlan Galvin. Lachlan Galvin is pushing to be a late inclusion. 'He (Galvin) sounds like a really switched-on kid with a high footy IQ. All I'd say is block out the noise as it's really irrelevant. 'What people think, feel all their opinions about you are irrelevant unless they're the ones closest to you like your family, friends your boss and your coach. 'Because everyone's always going have an opinion and not everyone's always going to agree with the decisions that you're making in life but it doesn't matter. It really doesn't matter as long as you know you're confident in your own ability, confident in the decision you make and you work hard. 'For Galvin, the sky is the limit, the decision to leave has been made, he can put all that behind him and look forward to playing footy.'
