Greens candidate Hannah Thomas suffers facial injuries after wild Belmore Palestine protest

A former Greens candidate who took on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come away with graphic injuries after a pro-Palestine protest descended into chaos.
The unauthorised protest took place on Friday morning outside SEC Plating in Belmore, Sydney.
Protesters claim the company provides components used in a class of jets operated by the Israeli Defence Force.
NSW Police attempted to disperse the group, stating the protest was not authorised.
'Five people have been arrested following an unauthorised protest in Sydney's west this morning,' a police statement read.
'About 5.35am Friday, officers attached to Campsie Police Area Command attended Lakemba Street, Belmore.
'Police issued a move on direction to a group of about 60 protesters, who allegedly attempted to block pedestrian access to the business.
'A 26-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were subsequently arrested after allegedly failing to comply with the direction.
'During the 35-year-old woman's arrest, she sustained facial injuries and was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment.'
The injured woman has been identified as Hannah Thomas, who challenged Mr Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler at the election earlier this year.
A video recorded by one of the protesters captures a confrontation between police officers and several attendees.
In the footage, some protesters can be heard shouting, 'let go of her.'
A woman wearing a black coat is from the group and at one moment she appears to fall to the ground alongside a police officer.
An officer is heard instructing, 'Get up now,' to which the woman responds, 'I'm trying.'
It is not clear if the woman who is taken away in the video is Ms Thomas.
A photo taken after the incident appears to show Ms Thomas standing next to an officer with visible swelling around her eye.
A source has confirmed with NewsWire that Ms Thomas has undergone initial surgery and her vision may be impacted.
A joint statement from the Greens said NSW Police had 'violently attacked and assaulted protesters' at the 'peaceful picket … leaving one woman with serious facial injuries and arresting multiple demonstrators'.
'SEC Plating reportedly is involved in providing plating services for various parts used in F-35 jets,' the statement reads.
'The State of Israel's fleet of around 40F-35 rely on the global supply chain and supplement supply from countries like Australia to continue the genocide against the Palestinian people.'
The statement says Peter O'Brien Lawyers has been engaged to represent Ms Thomas along with other protesters.
Ms Thomas has not been charged with a crime, the police said.
The police have charged a 29-year-old woman with refuse or fail to comply with direction, a 24-year-old man with larceny and goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, a 41-year-old man with using offensive language in or near public place or school and a 26-year-old man with refuse or fail to comply with directions and hinder or resist a police officer in the execution of duty.
They were all granted conditional bail and will appear before Bankstown Local Court on July 15.
Inquiries into the matter are ongoing, the police added.
Rising Tide organiser Zack Schofield was arrested in the tussle and claimed the protest constituted 'legitimate political expression against genocide'.
'I witnessed the brutal assault against a community member this morning, someone who was lawfully expressing themselves in public, and it was sickening,' he said.

Townsville remembers Jennifer Board, four years on from tragic death

When Jennifer Board was killed by a driver chasing a stolen car in Townsville in 2021, it sent shock waves through the community. What followed was an immediate and public outpouring of anger and grief. "I think the community could feel it," her sister, Siana Board, said. Jennifer was an innocent casualty of a car chase involving vigilante Christopher Hughes and car thief Gregory Clubb on February 5, 2021. Both vehicles hit 160kph on Ross River Road before Hughes lost control of his car, which struck Jennifer on her motorbike. Four years later, the two drivers involved in the crash have both been sentenced. Clubb was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 13-and-a-half years' jail in the Supreme Court this month. Justice David North told the Townsville courtroom that Clubb's offending had tragic consequences. "[The conviction] condemns you as the unlawful killer of a young woman," Justice North said. "[She] was innocent, had a bright future and played no role in the circumstances that led to her death." Justice North said Clubb "baited" Christopher Hughes into the chase by seeking him out and throwing items at his car. Hughes pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years' jail in 2023. While legal arguments dragged on, Jennifer's loved ones created events to keep her memory alive. Jennifer's love of football, animals and the colour orange is celebrated each year at a football carnival in her honour. Next weekend will be the fourth Jennifer Board Memorial Football Carnival, arranged by close friend and police officer Luke Southgate. He never expected the event to become as popular as it has, with thousands of attendees and dozens of sponsors. "I don't think that has anything to do with the organisers," he said. This year, the event will be on July 5 rather than the February anniversary of Jennifer's death. "We can solely focus on who she was as a person," Sergeant Southgate said. "We try to spread that vibe and that passion and that joy that she had, to everyone." Jennifer was a gym trainer with a bubbly personality who found friends easily. She was embarking on a new phase of her life, sitting an entry exam to join the Queensland Police Service three days before she died. In her final months, Jennifer splurged for the first time in her adult life on her dream motorbike. Members of Townsville's motorcycling community were the first to attend a rally the day after the fatal collision. They've since raised more than $10,000 in an annual charity ride for children at Townsville University Hospital. Hospital foundation CEO Stephanie Naunton said she was touched by the community's generosity in Jennifer's name. "That's an amazing contribution of the community, coming together to turn pain into purpose," Ms Naunton said. "It makes a huge difference to a lot of the children." The annual carnival, charity ride, and a soon-to-be unveiled memorial bench in Jennifer's name keeps her alive, Siana Board said. "When you lose somebody, it can feel like they cease to exist," she said. "Just to talk about her is one of the best gifts that you can give.

Former Greens candidate, bruised and bloodied, undergoes facial surgery after police arrest

The Greens candidate who ran against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in his inner west seat at last month's election has undergone surgery for serious facial injuries after being arrested at a protest in western Sydney on Friday. Hannah Thomas, a lawyer and activist, was photographed with a bloodied face and bruised, swollen shut, right eye in the back of an ambulance after her arrest during a picketing outside a business that reportedly supplies plating services for F-35 jets used by the Israeli Defence Force. Thomas, 35, ran as the Greens candidate for Grayndler against Albanese in the May federal election. NSW Police arrested five people following what it said was an unauthorised protest of about 60 people outside SEC Plating on Lakemba Street, Belmore, at 5.35am on Friday. 'As police attempted to arrest the protesters who were not complying with the directions, a scuffle ensued between police and protesters,' NSW Police said in a statement. A 35-year-old woman sustained facial injuries during her arrest after she allegedly failed to comply with a move-on direction and was taken to Bankstown Hospital, NSW Police said. Four other protesters were arrested and charged. Video footage shared on social media shows police officers and protesters in a physical struggle around a person being pulled and pushed by the crowd. A woman can be heard repeatedly yelling 'help me'. Another individual yelled: 'Let go of her … Please let go of her'. The footage appears to show two police officers pulling an individual from the scrimmage and moving the individual a few metres along the footpath before tripping them to the ground.
