Iowa basketball recruiting target seemingly trending in different direction

Iowa basketball has been on a recruiting tear recently. But you can't win them all. Ben McCollum has already had a huge impact on the way the Hawkeyes recruit top talent, whether through the transfer portal or traditional recruiting. From bringing in Bennett Stirtz and Brendan Hausen via the portal or getting four-star prospect Trey Thompson to commit and re-classify, McCollum has been able to bring top talent to Iowa City consistently. But in recruiting, sometimes you don't win the battle. And after some recent comments from a top target in the 2026 class, it seems Iowa may be falling behind other schools to land the talents of Quinn Costello. Costello is a four-star power forward prospect from Boston, Massachusetts, in the class of 2026. The 6-foot-10, 195-pound forward is currently the 72nd best prospect in the entire class according to 247Sports and has offers from Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, and Syracuse, among others. After strong showings on the summer circuits, he's seen his ranking rise from an unranked prospect to a top 75 player in the class. Costello recently opened up to 247Sports about his recruitment and his failure to mention Iowa could be pretty telling on the Hawkeyes' standing in his recruitment. "Everyone is recruiting me hard," Costello said. "But I've heard from new schools like Florida State and Villanova , and then there are the ones who've been showing up for me the most like Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, and other schools." While Iowa is still in the mix for Costello, it's not a great sign that he didn't mention them as one of the teams recruiting him hard and he hasn't scheduled a visit to Iowa City yet. While those signs aren't great for the Hawkeyes, you'd be a fool to count McCollum out of a recruiting battle. McCollum has shown that he can bring top-tier talent to Iowa, and he'll look to do it again with Costello. Until then, the focus is all on 2025 and seeing if Iowa can finally make a run in March. Iowa basketball offers five-star PG Cayden Daughtry in 2027 class

Iowa basketball is already starting their recruiting for the class of 2027. And they're swinging for the fences. On Saturday, Ben McCollum sent an offer to one of the best players in the entire 2027 class in five-star point guard Cayden Daughtry. The 6-foot 155-pound guard from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Calvary Christian Academy is the 17th best prospect in the entire country according to 247Sports. Daughtry took to X to announce the offer from the Hawkeyes. Daughtry is a highly sought after prospect, already receiving offers from 19 schools including Iowa, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers and Villanova among others. And by taking a look at his stats from this past season, it's easy to see why so many schools are interested in Daughtry's talents. He averaged 16.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game last season as a sophomore at Calvary Christian Academy. He led the team in assists and steals and was second in scoring on a team that went 22-1 and was ranked as the fifth best high school team in the nation last season according to MaxPreps. And he still has two years left in high school to keep getting better and better. Daughtry is the seventh player that Iowa has offered in the 2027 class and is the highest ranked player in that pool. If Iowa can get him to commit, he'll be one of the highest ranked recruits in the history of the Iowa basketball program. It's clear that Ben McCollum is changing the culture of the program and Hawkeye fans should be excited about the future of the team under his watch. Iowa men's basketball to play in in 20-team invitational in 2025

The anticipation surrounding the 2025-26 Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball team is palpable. The new head coach, Ben McCollum, is a proven winner at every stop he has been to. The roster is revamped with transfer portal talent littered up and down everywhere you look. The fans are eager to see what is in store. That wait may not be too long as the Iowa Hawkeyes will be one of 20 teams taking part in the largest multi-team event in college basketball in 2025, The Acrisure Series. The event is set for November 25-28 and will be at the Acrsure Arena in Palm Desert, California. The rest of the field features other Big Ten members, Washington and Minnesota, as well as in-state program Northern Iowa. It remains unknown who the Hawkeyes will be drawing in their matchups, but the field gives Iowa an early-season look at how they could fare against potential NCAA-tournament caliber programs. Per the official Hawkeye Sports website, the Hawkeyes have a game on Tuesday, November 25, and Wednesday, November 26. Last year's Acrisure Series featured just four teams, consisting of TCU, Santa Clara, Washington, and Colorado State, with Washington winning the invitational. This year's field, along with Iowa, includes Utah, Grand Canyon, Stanford, Washington, Nevada, San Jose State, Northern Iowa, San Diego, Pepperdine, Ole Miss, Saint Louis, Minnesota, Santa Clara, Colorado, San Francisco, Loyola Chicago, Tulsa, Cal Baptist, and Fresno State. Iowa basketball lands Trey Thompson, will reclassify to 2025 class

With Iowa basketball in its first offseason under new head coach Ben McCollum, the Hawkeyes received a significant impact to the team's immediate future on Saturday afternoon as 2026 four-star power forward recruit Trey Thompson announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes. The towering 6-foot-8, 220-pound native of Greeneville, Tenn., is listed as the No. 2 prospect in the state, No. 9 power forward, and No. 59 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class according to 247Sports. Advertisement Adding to the excitement, Thompson will also be reclassifying to the 2025 class, making him eligible for the 2025-26 campaign. In his three seasons on the varsity squad at Greeneville High School, Thompson has averaged 21.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game on 56% shooting from the field, 45% from 3-point territory, and 81% from the free-throw line, per his MaxPreps profile. Thompson chose Iowa over a list of other premier college basketball programs, which included Tennessee, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Clemson. The commitment is a major step in the right direction for the program, as recruits are now viewing the Hawkeyes' program as a much more desirable destination under the new leadership and infusion of talent to the roster.
