Mercedes-Benz profit drops 56 pct amid weak sales and tariffs
STUTTGART: Mercedes-Benz has announced a steep 56 percent decline in half-year profits, attributing the drop to weak sales, rising tariffs, and restructuring costs. The German automaker's net income fell to €2.7 billion from €6.1 billion in the same period last year. The company highlighted multiple challenges, including lower vehicle sales and increased expenses tied to efficiency programs. 'The adjusted operating margin for our passenger car division is now projected between 4 and 6 percent, down from 8.1 percent last year,' a spokesperson said. Revenue for the first half of 2025 dropped 8.6 percent to €66.4 billion, while operating profit (EBIT) plummeted by 55 percent to €3.6 billion. Mercedes-Benz now anticipates full-year revenue to fall significantly below 2024 levels, with sales volumes also expected to decline. - Bernama-dpa

Trump urges more aid for starving Gaza children, calls situation terrible
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has called for urgent food aid to civilians in Gaza, highlighting the dire situation faced by children in the region. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the severity of the crisis, stating, 'Whether they talk starvation or not, those are kids that are starving.' The president expressed deep concern over the suffering of families in Gaza, adding, 'You see, the mothers love them so much. There's just nothing they seem to be able to do.' When questioned about discussions with First Lady Melania Trump, he noted, 'She sees the same pictures that you see, that we all see. And I think everybody, unless they're pretty cold-hearted - or worse than that, nuts - there's nothing you can say other than it's terrible when you see the kids.' Trump reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the crisis, declaring, 'They've got to get that food. And we're going to get them food.' His remarks signal a stronger stance on the issue, following earlier appeals to Israel to increase aid deliveries to Gaza. Since March, Israel has restricted aid access to Gaza, leading to severe shortages of food, water, and medicine. Humanitarian organizations and UN agencies have repeatedly warned of 'catastrophic hunger,' with children bearing the brunt of the crisis. - Bernama-dpa

"If they agree to open up the union to American businesses, then we will let them pay a lower tariff," Trump said at an AI-focused event, referring to the ongoing negotiations with the EU. He added that serious talks were currently under way. The US has been negotiating with the EU for weeks on a trade deal to prevent US tariffs of 30 per cent on imports from the bloc from taking effect on August 1.

Singapore open water swim races to proceed as water quality improves
The pontoon used for the open water venue at the World Aquatics Championships in Sentosa on July 7. - ST SINGAPORE: The men's and women's 10-kilometre open water swim races at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore will go ahead on Wednesday (July 16), German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing the organisers. The women's race was postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday due to the dirty sea at Palawan Beach. Both events were pushed back while water monitoring continued. A statement from the organisers of Singapore 2025 said water quality samples collected during Tuesday afternoon met the standards outlined in the World Aquatics competition regulations. The three samples taken along the course had shown "a significant improvement, with levels of E. coli falling between the ranges of 'good' to 'excellent'," the organisers said. "Regular water quality monitoring and testing continues throughout the competition period to ensure athlete safety, with the health and safety of all participants continuing to guide all competition-related decisions," the statement said. "World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 organisers extend our appreciation to all athletes, officials, and supporters for their patience and cooperation." The men's 10-kilometre race is scheduled to start at 0500 GMT, followed by the women later in the day. - Bernama-dpa
