Sarawak to upgrade traffic parks to boost road safety education
SIBU: The Sarawak Transport Ministry will upgrade traffic parks across the state as part of efforts to strengthen practical road safety education among school students. State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the six existing traffic parks located in Sibu, Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Bintulu and Miri have received special allocations to ensure these facilities continue to serve as safe and impactful learning spaces. He said the Rejang Park Traffic Garden here, built over 30 years ago, has been allocated RM350,000 for upgrading works, in line with the ministry's broader effort to restore and strengthen road safety education. "Upgrading these facilities is important so that students can learn and understand traffic rules through real-life experiences that simulate actual road situations," he said when opening the Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) here today. Lee also announced that the ministry plans to increase the number of traffic parks under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), to ensure that every division in Sarawak has at least one fully equipped and functioning traffic park. "We are committed to expanding access to road safety education for more students and rural communities, so that no group is left behind in the effort to nurture responsible road users," he said. Tracing the programme's history, Lee said the Shell Traffic Games, introduced in 1963 through a collaboration between the Sarawak government and Shell Malaysia, had once made a significant impact on public awareness of road safety before being discontinued in 2015. He said the programme was revived and rebranded as the Sarawak Traffic Games last year, beginning in Miri, and has since become an annual event benefiting students throughout the state. He said that the next editions of STG are scheduled to be held in Sri Aman and Bintulu by the end of this year, while today's programme in Sibu involved students from nine primary and secondary schools in the district. – Bernama

Norris wins Hungarian Grand Prix in another McLaren 1-2
BUDAPEST: Lando Norris fended off teammate Oscar Piastri to win the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday and maintain McLaren's relentless march through the season. Mercedes' George Russell took third as McLaren celebrated their 200th F1 win over half a century since their first and fourth consecutive 1-2 this year. Norris, on a one-stop strategy, held off a charging Piastri on fresher tyres to take the chequered flag by only seven tenths of a second. Norris moved to within nine points of Piastri in the drivers' championship ahead of F1's mid-season break. "I'm dead, it was tough!" said Norris. "I wasn't planning the one-stop strategy. "It was tough in the final stint with Oscar catching I was pushing flat out you know so my voice has gone a little bit. "It feels good and rewarding a little more because of that but a good result today." "I pushed as hard as I could, looking forward to a few weeks off," said Piastri. "I saw Lando going for a one (stop) so I knew I was going to have to overtake on track, which is easier said then done around here" added the Australian about a circuit dubbed 'Monaco without the walls' for the lack of overtaking opportunities. "Everyone's going to sleep well tonight, great way to go into the summer break. The drivers were awesome," said McLaren CEO Zak Brown. Polesitter Charles Leclerc was furious with his Ferrari team's strategy as he came in fourth leaving the Scuderia still waiting for their first win of the season. Fernando Alonso, nursing a bad back, was right in the thick of things to finish fifth for Aston Martin, ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Lance Stroll in the other Aston, and Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls). King's historic state visit to Russia underscores deepening bilateral ties, says Ambassador
MOSCOW: The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia from Aug 5-10 has been described as the highlight of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, said Malaysia's Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. He said the visit is the highest-level ever made and the first by a Malaysian head of state to Russia since diplomatic relations were established in April 1967. "His Majesty's state visit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, is a recognition of the five decades of diplomatic ties with Malaysia, which was among the earliest Asean countries to establish ties with the then Soviet Union. "This visit also reflects the crucial role of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the context of international relations,' he told Bernama here on Sunday (Aug 1) in conjunction with Sultan Ibrahim's state visit. Cheong said the visit will begin in Moscow, where His Majesty is scheduled to hold an official meeting with Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace. Both leaders are expected to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, higher education, technology and innovation, people-to-people ties, digital transformation, agriculture and food security, as well as regional and international issues. "This highest-level visit will certainly have a high impact in increasing the momentum and positive trend of bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia. "It sends the message that Malaysia is serious and committed to efforts to strengthen and improve bilateral relations with Russia in all fields, particularly strategic cooperation and people-to-people ties,' he said. Sultan Ibrahim is scheduled to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday (Aug 5) and will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Kremlin on Wednesday (Aug 6), before holding an official meeting with Putin and attending a state banquet hosted by the Russian President. His Majesty is also scheduled to receive an audience from the Russian Automotive Technology Development Company as well as the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub. On Friday (Aug 8), Sultan Ibrahim will travel to Kazan, the fifth largest city in Russia, to receive an audience from the Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, at the Kazan Kremlin. Both parties are expected to discuss potential collaboration in the trade, investment, halal industry sectors and agricultural technology. His Majesty is also scheduled to attend a reception ceremony hosted by Minnikhanov and visit the Kazan Helicopter Plant to observe the manufacturing operations of civilian, defence and rescue helicopters. Russia is currently Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European countries and 28th globally, with bilateral trade valued at RM11.46bil (US$2.48bil) in 2024.
