Superfish has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Chippy 2025' award. The popular and traditional fish and chips shop is located at 20 Pow Street in the centre of Workington. With over 200 reviews online, Google has rated the town chippy 4.6 stars and Superfish has also built a strong reputation amongst locals and visitors. Recent online customer reviews include: 'Cumberland sausage was stunning, texture and taste was off the charts and the chips were cooked to perfection too… crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside just how they should be! 'Would definitely recommend to anyone who hesitates coming here it's a gem. 'The best chippy in town always to a very high standard my husband and myself have a takeaway once a week and I have to say the fish and chips are gorgeous and the staff are very friendly as well.' Superfish is open for takeaways from 11am until 8pm, Monday to Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. WE'RE highlighting the shortlisted chip shops in our competition in the . Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. CJ's Chip Shop has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Chippy 2025' award. The busy shop is located at 17 High Street in Wigton and has only been in business since March last year. It is run by father and son duo, Craig and Jason Thomason, who picked up the top prize during last year's awards. Jason told the News & Star last year that he believed the chip shop's success was down to how the staff engage with customers. He said: "It might be because we know all of the local people and a lot of people come in just for the banter and the craic that they get off me and my staff in the shop." As well as serving chip shop favourites, the team also serves homemade lasagne, chilli con carne and mac 'n' cheese pies, all which are part of their specials board. Google reviews of CJ's include: 'Food is delicious, prices really good, staff are very friendly. Best fish and chip shop in the area. 'Very tasty, fresh (fish was cooked fresh to order) and good value fish and chips - will definitely be back!' 'We must be doing something right': Carlisle chippy 'proud' to be in final

WE'RE highlighting the shortlisted chip shops in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. Morton Fryer has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Chippy 2025' award. The family-run shop has been a staple in Stonegarth for 15 years and it is owned by Serkan Topuz who has been in the chippy industry for over two decades. This is the shop's fifth year running making the top ten list and Serkan said he feels proud to be nominated once again. He said: 'It's great to be nominated for the fifth year – we must be doing something right! I feel so proud. 'I think there's three reasons for our nomination. We pride ourselves on the quality of our food, our good service, and our hygiene, and we are a very clean shop.' Being in the industry for over half of his life, Serkan told the News & Star his favourite thing about it is the people. Their famous fish and chips. 'Seeing our regulars every day is a great feeling, for us it's not like serving customers, it's like serving someone we know. We take good care of them. Fish and chips are the top seller at the Morton Fryer, with the busiest months running from March through to New Year. Although rising prices of ingredients are a growing challenge, Serkan remains committed to maintaining the team's high quality takeaway food. He added: 'Thank you to all our customers for the nomination, our regulars and new ones. I've been working in Carlisle for 15 years now and I'm proud to serve you all.' Paolo's Fish and Chips has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Chippy 2025' award. The family-run shop, which just celebrated its twelfth birthday last week, has been part of the Denton Holme community in Carlisle since 2013. Gemma Ellwood runs the shop with the help of her brother, Paul Fontana and her dad, also called Paul Fontana. She told the News & Star it was an 'honour' to be nominated. Gemma said: 'It's an honour. There's a lot of great chippy's in Cumbria and Carlisle so it's lovely to be thought of.' Gemma has been involved in running the chip shop since the very beginning and believes their fresh products set them apart. Chips and sausages at Paolo's. 'We're also a bit different too – we have specials, serve gluten free products 24/7 and even have battered mars bars and cream eggs which go down well! The most popular item is probably sausage chips and curry, but cheesy chips are a big one now.' Paolo's is open all day with the help of around 15 staff, both front of house and behind the scenes. Gemma says they see a lot of regular customers. She added: 'We're busy all year round but between autumn and winter we see a lot of people, it's the ultimate comfort food! 'We see regulars, some every day, some two to three days a week. Our staff recognise people and are good at remembering their orders.' Paolo's chips. MARYPORT'S own Graham Eyes High Class Butchers has been crowned by News & Star readers as the region's Best Butchers, Deli or Farm Shops 2025. Graham Eyes was set up four years ago in Cumbria and has 22 shops across the north of England, however, its Maryport shop has taken away the first prize. Dominic Hinsley, the area manager across Cumbria, was 'elated' to be informed about the win while enjoying a relaxing day off. He said: 'Oh, that's amazing! I'm elated. 'We've had great support. Anthony, Susan, Shirley and I would like to thank all our customers. 'The customers have been really positive, wishing us luck and saying it was well deserved. They were chuffed for us to even reach the final. This will definitely put us on the map. 'As I said in the previous interview, we're a real community hub here. People come in for a crack and to see what's going on – it's somewhere for people to go.' The voting display at Graham Eyes. Not only did Dominic want to thank the customers, but he also commended everyone else who reached the final. 'Everyone in retail knows it's a tough but rewarding job. Congratulations to all the other finalists and nominees too!' Graham Eyes High Class Butcher's in Maryport is located on Curzon Street. It is open 365 days a year. They also have locations in Whitehaven, Alston and Bowness.
