Maruti Suzuki Baleno got dual scores in Bharat NCAP crash test. Here's why

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno, one of India's popular premium hatchbacks, has secured two distinct safety ratings in the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) crash tests, reflecting differences in safety features across its variants. The results, released recently, highlight the impact of additional airbags on the vehicle's safety Baleno was tested in two configurations: one equipped with 2 airbags and another with 6 airbags. The key difference in the BNCAP scores stems from the enhanced safety features in the 6-airbag variant, particularly in adult occupant Occupant Protection (AOP) The 6-airbag variant scored 26.52 out of 32 points (82.88%), earning a 4-star 2-airbag variant scored 24.04 out of 32 points (74.13%), also securing a 4-star higher score for the 6-airbag variant is attributed to the inclusion of side and curtain airbags, which provide superior protection in side-impact and pole tests. Despite the improved score, the 6-airbag variant fell just short of the 27-point threshold required for a 5-star Occupant Protection (COP)Both variants performed identically in child occupant protection, scoring 34.81 out of 49 points, resulting in a 3-star rating. The additional airbags in the 6-airbag variant primarily enhance adult safety and have little impact on child protection metrics, which focus on child seat compatibility and restraint number of airbags in the Baleno varies depending on the variant, but essential safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a pedestrian protection system, and seatbelt reminders are offered as standard across the contrast, Maruti Suzuki's Dzire has made history by becoming the first sedan in India to earn a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP).The Dzire achieved an impressive 29.46 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 41.57 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection (COP).Both the All-New Dzire and the New Age Baleno—which received a 4-star rating under Bharat NCAP—are based on Suzuki's 5th-generation HEARTECT platform. They come equipped with advanced safety features, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Program+ (ESP), ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Assist, a 360-degree camera, and Isofix mounts for child to Auto Today Magazine

Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday said its Dzire has become the first sedan in the country to receive a 5-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP), which was launched in 2023. BNCAP has so far tested at least 16 vehicles — all sport utility vehicles (SUVs) — under its crash safety evaluation programme, making the Dzire the first non-SUV to earn the top rating. Bharat NCAP follows globally benchmarked protocols and aims to raise safety awareness among Indian car buyers. The certification was presented by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. He said: 'It gives me immense pride to see made-in-India, high-volume mainstream cars achieve exemplary safety ratings under BNCAP. I congratulate Maruti Suzuki on securing a 5-star safety rating for the all-new Dzire.' In the same round of testing, Maruti's New Age Baleno received a 4-star rating. Gadkari lauded Maruti Suzuki's move to equip all its models with six airbags, calling it a 'significant stride' towards improving vehicle safety across segments. Maruti said it plans to equip all its passenger vehicles with six airbags as standard by the end of this year. Currently, 10 models — including the Alto K10, Swift, Brezza, and Grand Vitara — already offer six airbags across variants. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India, said: 'BNCAP brings to India stringent vehicle testing protocols that will help customers make informed decisions. We are honoured to receive this certification.' Takeuchi added that all 18 Maruti models are already equipped with the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as a standard feature — well ahead of regulatory requirements.
