Not Just A Crematorium: This Gujarat Village Built A Space Of Peace & Dignity

Last Updated: A Gujarat village turns its crematorium into a modern, serene space for dignified final farewells. In a heartening example of community-driven transformation, Chikhli village in Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district, Gujarat, has turned its local crematorium, once a neglected and sombre space, into a modern, serene, and respectful place for final farewells. Now known as Shivdham, this cremation ground has become a model for the entire district, thanks to a remarkable renovation project that cost around Rs 60 lakh. What was once a traditional, bare-bones cremation site has now been reimagined with modern amenities, all made possible through the contributions and dedication of the village's generous donors and residents. From Fearful To Peaceful Bhaveshbhai Dollar, a local resident, explains that the space has been entirely redesigned with paved walkways using paver blocks, lush tree plantations, and a calm, green environment. Comfortable seating areas and shaded sheds offer a peaceful place for mourning families, while a continuous 24/7 water supply ensures cleanliness and convenience. Special platforms have been built for bathing rituals, and ample lighting has been installed for night-time use, transforming what was once seen as a grim, fearful location into a place of dignity, serenity, and respect. Thanks to the community's vision and commitment, Shivdham is now considered the second-best modern cremation facility in Amreli district. What sets it apart is not just the infrastructure but the intention behind it, to treat the final journey of a human being with grace, hygiene, and humaneness. Chikhli's Shivdham stands as a shining example of how even villages can lead the way in creating respectful, well-maintained, and spiritually uplifting spaces for last rites. It's more than just a cremation ground, it is a symbol of progress, humanity, and community spirit.
