A Gujarat village turns its crematorium into a modern, serene space for dignified final farewells.
In a heartening example of community-driven transformation, Chikhli village in Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district, Gujarat, has turned its local crematorium, once a neglected and sombre space, into a modern, serene, and respectful place for final farewells.
Now known as Shivdham, this cremation ground has become a model for the entire district, thanks to a remarkable renovation project that cost around Rs 60 lakh.
What was once a traditional, bare-bones cremation site has now been reimagined with modern amenities, all made possible through the contributions and dedication of the village's generous donors and residents.
From Fearful To Peaceful
Bhaveshbhai Dollar, a local resident, explains that the space has been entirely redesigned with paved walkways using paver blocks, lush tree plantations, and a calm, green environment.
Comfortable seating areas and shaded sheds offer a peaceful place for mourning families, while a continuous 24/7 water supply ensures cleanliness and convenience.
Special platforms have been built for bathing rituals, and ample lighting has been installed for night-time use, transforming what was once seen as a grim, fearful location into a place of dignity, serenity, and respect.
Thanks to the community's vision and commitment, Shivdham is now considered the second-best modern cremation facility in Amreli district. What sets it apart is not just the infrastructure but the intention behind it, to treat the final journey of a human being with grace, hygiene, and humaneness.
Chikhli's Shivdham stands as a shining example of how even villages can lead the way in creating respectful, well-maintained, and spiritually uplifting spaces for last rites. It's more than just a cremation ground, it is a symbol of progress, humanity, and community spirit.

AFP/File Photo It is aimed at people in liberal professions, such as journalists, researchers, artists, and those in regulated fields like engineering, law, and medicine, who are looking to live and work in one of Europe's strongest economies. Who is eligible? As per the German Missions in India, Section 18 of the German Income Tax Act recognises the following professions as freelance employment: Independent researchers and scientists Artists, musicians, and teachers Lawyers, notaries, and tax advisers Patent lawyers Engineers and architects Journalists and photojournalists Interpreters and translators Physiotherapists and medical workers Economists and business consultants Dentists and veterinarians Commercial chemists Accountants Pilots Some professions may have additional rules or conditions. Below is the complete list: A valid passport with at least two blank pages, issued within the past 10 years Proof of freelance work and educational qualifications, such as a university degree or other recognised higher education certificate Evidence of financial stability for one year, showing a minimum monthly income of approximately 1,280.06 euros (around Rs 1.27 lakh) A clear and detailed outline of your freelance plans, along with your curriculum vitae (CV) Proof of contacts or commitments from potential clients in Germany or Europe Valid health insurance coverage For applicants over 45, documents related to pension plans, savings, or retirement benefits Confirmation of accommodation or address in Germany Payment receipt for the visa fee (75 euros or around Rs 7,500) The visa lets individuals work independently in the country without needing a full-time employer. AFP/File Photo How can Indians apply for the visa? For Indian applicants, the process generally starts with applying for a National D Visa before entering Germany. Here is a step-by-step guide: Step 1: Fill out and print the National D Visa application form. Types of Freelancer Visas in Germany Your eligibility for a freelancer visa in Germany depends on the kind of work you do. There are two main categories: Freelancer (Freiberufler) This category includes professionals who offer their services independently, often within the liberal professions. Tee Time? Trump Swings Into Scotland With Snipers, Golf Clubs And A Personal Chef

Last Updated: Donald Trump arrived in Scotland for a four-day visit, including stops at his golf resorts. US President Donald Trump arrived in Scotland for a four-day visit that includes stops at both of his golf resorts in the country. The trip is not classified as an official state visit but includes meetings with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney. Scotland also has a personal connection with Donald Trump as his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. During his visit, Donald Trump will travel to his property at Menie in Aberdeenshire, where he will open a new 18-hole golf course. He will also spend time at Turnberry in South Ayrshire, a resort he purchased in 2014. Turnberry is considered one of the premier golf destinations in the UK, though it has not hosted the Open Championship since being acquired by Donald Trump. Donald Trump's visit comes with unprecedented security precautions following last year's assassination attempt on the US President during a campaign rally. A 10-foot-high perimeter fence has been erected around Turnberry and local roads have been closed. US Secret Service agents, military transport vehicles and sniper teams have been deployed in both Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire. Marine One helicopters and the US President's armoured limousine, known as 'The Beast," have also been brought in. The US President's meals are being prepared by a personal chef and hotel rooms are subject to additional security sweeps. Trade Talks And Political Tensions Though the trip includes ceremonial and business elements, political meetings are also scheduled. Donald Trump is expected to discuss trade relations and tariffs with UK PM Keir Starmer. However, tensions remain as Scottish First Minister John Swinney has previously criticised Donald Trump's leadership and Scottish Secretary Ian Murray has backed past motions condemning the US President's rhetoric. Protests are expected in cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tripura CM urges Centre to increase upper loan cap in externally aided projects

Agartala, Jul 25 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the state has urged the Centre to increase the upper cap of loans under externally aided development projects. According to existing guidelines, the northeastern state can take a maximum loan amounting to Rs 4,000 crore under externally aided projects in a financial year. While speaking at a government programme in Kashba in Sepahijala district, the chief minister said that with the state spending a huge amount of money on infrastructure building, the upper limit of loans under externally aided schemes often falls short for undertaking new projects. 'At present, we are allowed to receive loans amounting to Rs 4,000 crore under externally aided projects in a financial year, which is not sufficient for the state. I have already written to the Centre to increase the upper cap of receiving loans to speed up development," he said. Asserting that tourism can boost the state's socio-economic condition, the chief minister said the government has increased the annual budget substantially to develop infrastructure as much as possible. 'The state's budget has increased from Rs 27,000 crore in 2024-25 FY to Rs 32,000 crore during the fiscal 2025-26, and Rs 7,000 crore has been earmarked for capital expenditure. If we spend more on infrastructure, the GSDP will increase," he said. 'Despite being a small state, Sikkim, with a population of 7 lakh, has the highest gross state domestic product (GSDP) among the eight northeastern states, banking on tourism. If we develop tourism-related infrastructures, Tripura can surpass Sikkim," he said. Currently, Tripura has the second-highest said the Tourism department has taken several initiatives to promote the state's spiritual and eco tourism globally. 'Tata Group is set to convert the iconic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala into a five-star hotel. Once the project is completed, tourists from foreign nations will visit the northeastern state to see temples, iconic structures and eco tourism sites," he said. Taking a dig at the erstwhile government, the chief minister said the previous dispensation did not try to develop the royal family's historic buildings. 'We have begun to restore and develop the royal structures, including the Ujjayanta Palace, to present their creations before the world," he said.
