Vancouver harbour a buffet of seals and sea lions for Bigg's orcas
Sightings of Bigg's killer whales in the Vancouver and Victoria harbours have increased 'significantly' this year, say whale observers. A pod of Bigg's orcas in Vancouver's English Bay in 2025. The population of Bigg's killer whales — which is believed to be in the hundreds — has grown since the government stopped culling harbour seals and sea lions, the primary food source for Bigg's, in the 1970s, said Andrew Trites, director of the marine mammal research unit at the University of B.C. 'They travel the coastline, and the portion that stop in the Salish Sea are here for one big reason, and that is we have the world's highest density of harbour seals,' said Trites, adding harbour porpoises are also growing in numbers. All photographs taken by Wild Whales Vancouver and taken while abiding to all rules and regulations such as appropriate distances from whales using telephoto lenses. Photo by Sara Jenkins and Melanie Warren The recovery of the Bigg's killer whale population is in stark contrast to the endangered southern resident orcas, which now number only 73. Their decline is attributed to dwindling chinook salmon stocks, toxic chemicals and noise from freighters, which makes it hard for them to find food. An independent scientific panel released 26 recommendations Monday for governments to help save the species. Bigg's killer whales are also at risk from vessel noise and toxic chemicals, so the main difference is diet, said Trites. 'The southern residents rely on chinook salmon and chinook have been in trouble, not just in B.C. but all across their range down to California,' he said. Trites called the southern resident orcas 'fish specialists.' To assume they can adapt to eating seals, like other orca species, would be 'like asking a vegetarian to start eating meat,' he said. Nevertheless, the Orca Behaviour Institute reported 239 unique killer whale sightings last month in the Salish Sea, which is the most it says it has ever documented in a month. 'With Bigg's present every day of June, this also means we have confirmed their presence in the Salish Sea for the first 180 days of the year for the first time ever. We keep thinking that surely their numbers cannot continue to rise, yet they continue to do so,' the institute wrote in a post, adding there were no sightings of southern resident orcas. Photo by Sara Jenkins and Melanie Warren Trites said that while the number of Bigg's killer whales has been increasing over the years because of the seal and sea lion boom, the data may also be getting a boost from more people calling in sightings. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'What you're seeing here is an amazing sample of citizen science where the public is engaged,' he said. 'They're sending in the reports, in addition to the whale watching fleets sharing their information. And so we're getting a much more complete understanding of where the whales are and the distribution.' It's also pupping season for harbour seals and they're easy prey for the Bigg's, said Thomas Doniol-Valcroze, a whale research scientist and head of the cetacean program at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Thanks to First Nations conservation in the Indian Arm, herring, a food source for seals and sea lions, has returned in abundance, he said. Doniol-Valcroze said that while there is no census for the Bigg's orcas because of the vast distances they travel, scientists know they are returning to the Salish Sea to have their calves. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Gary Sutton, a research specialist for the Whales Initiative at Ocean Wise, said there are several families of Bigg's killer whales returning to familiar waters. 'We know that year-over-year the population is growing … As the population grows, these young families that have grown up here are starting to be seen more in the area,' he said. For example, one family is a mother and her three children — an adult son and two daughters — often seen near Stanley Park. 'The nickname of her adult son is Stanley,' he said. All photos provided by Wild Whales Vancouver and taken while abiding to all rules and regulations such as appropriate distances from whales using telephoto lenses. Photo by Sara Jenkins and Melanie Warren Both Trites and Sutton agree that while the Bigg's killer whales are doing well, they still face some of the same threats as the southern resident orcas, including toxic chemicals building up in the food chain, especially near heavily populated areas like Vancouver, and noise from vessels. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Sutton said the southern residents rely on echo locating fish, while Bigg's rely more on passively listening for a seal grunt underwater or a splashing seal on the surface, and then sneak up on their prey. They also appear fearless in populated harbours, he added, 'diving under docks' to catch a seal. 'So sound is equally as important to them, and certainly increased tanker traffic will impact them long-term, as will pleasure vessels running around in high-density areas, like the Vancouver harbour, up into Indian Arm,' said Sutton. Sara Jenkins, a captain with the whale-watching group Wild Whales Vancouver, said she's observed a rise in recreational boats driving over the whales, parking their boats in their path and approaching closer than 400 metres, which is the distance recreational boats are required by law to stay away. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. She urged boaters to use more caution this summer. Between April and July, Wild Whales reported 13 different Bigg's family pods in Howe Sound, Burrard Inlet and Vancouver harbour, Jenkins said. Up until about six years ago, the group rarely saw Bigg's orcas in the harbour, she said, noting the increase may also have to do with the decline in southern resident orcas as Bigg's used to stay out of their territory. Over the same time period, Jenkins reported sightings of two individual humpback whales, who stayed in the area for more than 12 days. A recent sighting of a humpback whale in Vancouver harbour. Photo provided by Wild Whales Vancouver and taken while abiding to all rules and regulations such as appropriate distances from whales using telephoto lenses. Photo by Sara Jenkins and Melanie Warren Jenkins said of the 13 Bigg's family pods that nine of them travelled under the Lions Gate Bridge during this time period. While it's 'pretty cool' to look at, she said, 'we do often also see orcas in Burrard Inlet who approach the Lions Gate Bridge and will do a dramatic U-turn and head back out towards the Georgia Strait. So maybe the busy harbour is not for every whale.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. On Wednesday, Ocean Wise released a new whale reporting app so that anyone can report a sighting in real time to protect whales from ship strikes and support marine conservation. The new app combines the widely used WhaleReport app and Whale Report Alert System app into one system for both citizens and commercial mariners. When a whale sighting is reported, it alerts large vessels in the area to slow down or change course to avoid collisions. ticrawford@ Read More Vancouver Canucks Vancouver Canucks Local News News Local News
