Atlanta Falcons Broadcaster Wes Durham Previews the Upcoming Season

Atlanta Falcons Broadcaster Wes Durham Previews the Upcoming Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Wes Durham has served as the Voice of the Atlanta Falcons since 2004. Additionally, he is a college football and basketball announcer for ESPN and the ACC Network. I recently had the chance to chat with Wes about his enthusiasm for the upcoming season and the training camp competitions to keep an eye on this summer. Advertisement Craig: Have you bought into the hype surrounding Michael Penix Jr.? Wes: You have to remind yourself that Michael is an 'older young player' in the NFL. One of the things that he brings to the table is a lot of experience from all different levels. I think he arrived a year ago as an accomplished college player who was clearly ready for the next step, but because of the things he had been through at both Indiana and Washington during his college career, he showed remarkable patience, and I think that will serve him well as this season unfolds. Craig: Are you confident he's the future 'face' of the organization? Wes: This might not be a popular opinion, but for me, Bijan Robinson is the face of the franchise right now. I think QB is a position where many fans think of that title, but in the case of the Falcons, I think Robinson has the potential to be one of the league's showstoppers for seasons to come. Craig: I've written pieces this summer stating that the opener vs. Tampa is a critical game to set the tone for the season. Maybe not a must-win but an important one. Would you agree? Advertisement Wes: I don't know that one game is more important than any other for Atlanta. The first four games before the 'bye week' all seem pretty important to me. Craig: On July 23rd the Falcons will officially open camp. What position battles are you most intrigued by? Wes: Two on defense will be interesting for me. The opposite corner from AJ Terrell is one I'll pay close attention to for sure. Mike Hughes, Clark Phillips, and who else might emerge there. The second one is at Linebacker, where I think Divine Deablo looked strong in mini-camp, and I think could end up being one of the most underrated signings of the off-season. Craig: I'm curious if you still get butterflies on gameday pulling into the stadium? Advertisement Wes: Not like you would think. The chemistry and friendship Dave Archer and I have built in the last 21 years doing the games actually gives us a lot of confidence, so it's a different kind of excitement than butterflies, but it's been a professional thrill to do these games with 'Arch' for so many years. We both are grateful to Mr. Blank and the organization for their long-term support of our broadcasts. Bijan Robinson Could Become the Falcons All-Time Best Running Back

Bijan Robinson Could Become the Falcons All-Time Best Running Back originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When Herschel Walker was dominating opponents in Athens, I dreamed as a child about the possibility of him bringing his skills about 70 miles south to join the Atlanta Falcons. The thought of forming a "dream backfield" with Walker and William Andrews was certainly just a fantasy. In 1983, when Walker was available, he chose to join the USFL and play for the New Jersey Generals. That year, Atlanta had the 16th overall pick and missed out on several Hall of Fame talents in that draft class, including Dan Marino, Darrell Green, and Richard Dent, who were all selected much later. As fate would have it, 1983 turned out to be the last complete season for William Andrews. He rushed the ball 331 times, contributing to 39% of the total offensive output, but a freak injury during training camp sidelined him for the next two years. He never fully bounced back and was never quite the same player again. Too often, promising careers and dreams are cut short. Jamal Anderson faced his own knee problems. Following the Super Bowl, Anderson was set for a huge game the next season at Texas Stadium on Monday Night Football. If he couldn't secure a Super Bowl win, dominating the Cowboys in front of a nationally televised audience would be the next best achievement. Sadly, Anderson suffered a knee injury, went through rehabilitation, and then re-injured his left ACL again. It was two significant injuries within three seasons, leading to an early retirement. Advertisement In looking at the Falcons' all-time rushing leaders, names like Anderson and Andrews don't rank higher due to their shortened careers. Currently, the top spot is held by Gerald Riggs with 6,631 yards. As Bijan Robinson gears up for his third season, he's already over a third of the way to surpassing that total. In fact, if Robinson simply matches his performance from last season, he will soar to number seven on the list, surpassing the rushing totals of Stanback, Hampton, and Michael Vick. The crucial factor for Robinson will be maintaining consistency each week, which was somewhat inconsistent last year. For instance, in games against the Broncos, Saints, and Chiefs, Bijan managed only 94 rushing yards combined. For those of you scoffing at an all-time total of just 6,631 to lead a franchise, there are even lower totals across the NFL. The Texans are slightly behind with Arian Foster's 6,472. The Bucs are actually below 6,000 yards with James Wilder, and the Patriots' all-time leader is the late Sam "Bam" Cunningham at 5,453. The only obstacles in Robinson's path to dominating the city, winning rushing titles, and shattering team records are an unfortunate injury or a fallout with management. Here's to you, Mr. Robinson; a city is waiting, and so are the record books. Falcons fail to crack top 10 in Pro Football Focus' receiving corps rankings

The Atlanta Falcons have committed considerable resources to their offense in recent years, spending four consecutive top-10 picks on skill position players. While the offense hasn't exactly taken off in recent years, there's reason to believe things will be different in 2025. Second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. appears to be set up for success in his first year starting. If Penix performs at the level many believe he's capable of, the Falcons offense should be among the NFL's top units this season. Advertisement One thing working to the young quarterback's advantage is the team's receiving corps. There's no shortage of options for Penix to throw to. Drake London and Darnell Mooney are one of the top wide receiver duos, combining for 2,263 yards last season. Atlanta's receiving corps just barely missed the top 10 in PFF's rankings, landing as the No. 11 ahead of the 2025 NFL season: Drake London came in at No. 11 in PFF's wide receiver rankings after garnering a 90.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024, which ranked fifth among wide receivers. Bijan Robinson's 82.2 PFF receiving grade placed fifth among running backs who played at least 100 receiving snaps, and Darnell Mooney's 74.6 mark was one of the more underrated performances from a WR2 this past year. If the Falcons can get anything at all from Kyle Pitts, this becomes a very diverse group. -- Trevor Sikkema, PFF While there's no shame in being ranked 11th, a case could be made that the Falcons have a top-five receiver group. London has shown a ton of growth over his first few seasons, and Mooney finished with 992 receiving yards despite missing the season finale in 2024. If you factor in the pass-catching ability of running back Bijan Robinson, the team's overall depth at wide receiver -- including Pro Bowl wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge -- and the potential of fifth-year tight end Kyle Pitts, there's only a handful of teams with more weapons. Advertisement Despite having essentially just one proven receiver in D.J. Moore, the Chicago Bears are ranked ahead of the Falcons at No. 9. The group obviously has some upside with first-round picks Colston Loveland and Rome Odunze, but it feels like the ranking is based more on potential than reality. At the end of the day, the Falcons have to feel good about their offense. With a solid offensive line and numerous weapons, Penix is set up for success in his first season starting for Atlanta.
