Bill Cowher Issues No 'Question' Judgment Of Aaron Rodgers Major Move
Bill Cowher Issues No 'Question' Judgment Of Aaron Rodgers Major Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When Bill Cowher speaks, Pittsburgh Steelers fans listen. And this week, the legendary coach has weighed in on his old team's move to sign Aaron Rodgers ... Advertisement And of course, when Rodgers is the topic, Steelers fans now listen as well. So with that "perfect storm'' setup arranged ... This week, TV host Dan Patrick asked Cowher about what level of autonomy he'd give he'd give the 41-year-old Rodgers and whether it might be similar to the power the coach once let Ben Roethlisberger have. The former Steelers head coach issued a clear judgment. "Absolutely. I don't think there's any question about it," Cowher told Patrick. "And I think Aaron's at a point where he knows, you don't want him to be throwing the ball 40 times a game at this point. Advertisement "You want Aaron Rodgers to be healthy going into the playoffs." That answer is both about Rodgers' ability ... and his vulnerability. So protecting the four-time NFL MVP by keeping him upright, in part the responsibility of a capable running game, will be key for the Steelers as they try to repeat as a playoff entrant .... And more. And when the game is on the line? Regular season, playoffs, whenever? "You can turn the ball over to him at the end of a half, at the end of a game and know he's been there before," Cowher said. "And I think he will operate that very, very efficiently. Again, I think it's going to be a matter of getting comfortable within this system with the players he has around him." Advertisement Cowher, 68, is a "Steelers for Life'' guy who led the team to a Super Bowl title during the 2005 season before going into broadcasting, where he remains a CBS studio fixture. Mike Tomlin took over then, and remains in place ... though for all of the relative success, the Steelers haven't won a playoff game in eight years. The franchise has spent this offseason making a big push with big changes that include adding veterans Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jonnu Smith, Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey. Cowher mentioned the idea of a "degree of urgency" to make this work .... but also warned of the need for patience. Advertisement "I think the biggest thing right now is going out there and try to bring this whole thing together," Cowher said. "A lot of change in terms of the faces of this team. That doesn't happen overnight. It takes time.'' Steelers Legend Joey Porter Sr. Reflects on Famous Incident with Ray Lewis: ‘I'm About to Wolverine Myself'
Former Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Joey Porter Sr. cleared the air on the famous 'bus incident' with Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis in Week 1 of the 2003 season. Porter did not play in the game, as he was recovering from a gun shot wound, which occurred outside of a night club in Denver. Porter nearly suited up, however. 'I had just got show in Denver. This is Week 1, I have to miss the game. I'm in pregame warm up, Ray Lewis is out there and getting ready for the game, he's looking at me and talking directly to me. 'This is my house, we about to do boom, boom, do this, X, Y and Z. I looked around like, 'Shit, who we talking, too? I looked, I said, 'Damn it's just me out here. I'm like, man, you talking to me?' Advertisement 'So I start stretching. I'm like, 'Shit, (Rodgers Freyvogel) go get my gear.' You think I can't go play, I'm about to play today. Mind you my ass just got shot. I'm about to Wolverine myself. This hole in my body is no longer there,' Porter said on Cam Heyward's Not Just Football podcast. 'Joey you're not playing,'' Porter added while imitating Bill Cowher's voice. 'So now I'm so damn angry because Ray got me so gassed up.' The Steelers defeated the Ravens, 34-15, but the animosity between the two teams continued after the game. 'Plax and Corey Fuller are going at it. They're talking having a conversation. Ray come out and he sees Corey. He's like Corey, 'You good over there?' And I'm like … 'Nah, he ain't good, come and check on him,' Porter explained. 'Then he said, 'Nah man, I'm (going to) pray for you.' And then he got on the bus, and that shit made me mad. That's why I started walking toward the bus. I'm like you talked all that shit. Now don't sent me a prayer. Don't pray for me mother******. Advertisement 'And then they see me walking toward (the bus), and that's when they start the story, 'Oh, Joey got on the bus trying to fight Ray Lewis!' People who know the story, they know.' So there you have it, Porter did not actually go on the Ravens' team bus and try to fight Ray Lewis. Nevertheless, it sure is an entertaining story. There was nothing like the Steelers-Ravens rivalry in the 2000s. Steelers' hilarious Bill Cowher and James Harrison story resurfaces
The hilarious back-and-forth between Steelers legendary HC Bill Cowher and DC Dick LeBeau in trying to get James Harrison off the field has resurfaced — and it's still just as funny almost four years later. The clip in question, from A Football Life: James Harrison, retells a 2004 story in which OLB Joey Porter was ejected during pre-game warmups against the Browns, giving Harrison his first starting opportunity — one that Cowher claims he refused to leave the field on: Advertisement "[LeBeau] goes, 'Coach, [Harrison] won't come out,'" Cowher said. "I go, 'Make him come out.' He goes, 'You make him come out. He won't come out.' I go, 'No, I'm not making him come out.' I said, 'He already told me he wasn't coming out either.' So I said, 'We both got the same dilemma.' I said, 'Just let him play. I've already cut the guy three times — I'm not going to tell him to come out of the game. I've already done that. I'm done cutting the guy.'" Harrison's drive and desire to be great — as evident in Cowher's hilarious retelling — is why the legendary defender will one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame, as the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year, four-time All-Pro, and two-time Super Bowl champion was nothing short of excellent. Steelers Shocker As 'Stale' Mike Tomlin Urged By Legend To Leave
Famously, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been a model of coaching consistency as they have engineered their way to a streak of incredible longevity in the head coach's office over the past 56 years. Consider ... Advertisement Dating back to 1969, when Chuck Noll took over for Bill Austin, who went 11-28-3 in three seasons from 1966 to 1968, Pittsburgh has had just three coaches. Noll marched along the sidelines for 21 seasons, winning four Super Bowls, with just seven losing seasons in that time. Bill Cowher took over in 1992 and stormed those same sidelines and won a Super Bowl with just 3 losing campaigns in 15 NFL seasons. Cowher retired after the 2006 season when Mike Tomlin took over. Tomlin is entering his 19th season for the Steelers with one Super Bowl under his watch, with an astonishing zero losing seasons. But ... one Steelers legend now says there is a "but.'' ... claiming that Tomlin's voice in the locker room has grown "stale.'' Advertisement "I believe Mike Tomlin should coach in another organization,'' Ryan Clark said. "Mike Tomlin should be a fresh voice somewhere else. ... I believe his voice has run stale there.'' Make no mistake; Clark, now an ESPN analyst, is a supporter of Tomlin's. Said Clark: "I believe he's allowed that team to reach the highest of heights they're going to reach unless they can get a top-tier quarterback. I've said time and time again, I do believe that should be the decision he makes.'' The "get a quarterback'' thing is ... a problem. And yet Tomlin isn't likely going anywhere in the immediate future. The coach signed a new deal back in 2024 that will take him through until the end of the 2027 campaign. Advertisement Entering his season 19, Tomlin might have his biggest challenge ahead of him since ... well, since last season. The team managed a 10-7 mark and made the playoffs without top-notch play quarterback, and split the season between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. They're both gone now, and Tomlin and the Steelers are in trouble under center. Unless the Aaron Rodgers saga turns out positively, with the four-time league MVP not only suiting up in the black and gold for the first week of the season but also playing at a high level ... Tomlin's streak might be up. And according to Clark, maybe his time should be up, too.
