So with that "perfect storm'' setup arranged ...
This week, TV host Dan Patrick asked Cowher about what level of autonomy he'd give he'd give the 41-year-old Rodgers and whether it might be similar to the power the coach once let Ben Roethlisberger have.
The former Steelers head coach issued a clear judgment.
"Absolutely. I don't think there's any question about it," Cowher told Patrick. "And I think Aaron's at a point where he knows, you don't want him to be throwing the ball 40 times a game at this point.

"You want Aaron Rodgers to be healthy going into the playoffs."
That answer is both about Rodgers' ability ... and his vulnerability. So protecting the four-time NFL MVP by keeping him upright, in part the responsibility of a capable running game, will be key for the Steelers as they try to repeat as a playoff entrant ....

"You can turn the ball over to him at the end of a half, at the end of a game and know he's been there before," Cowher said. "And I think he will operate that very, very efficiently. Again, I think it's going to be a matter of getting comfortable within this system with the players he has around him."

Cowher, 68, is a "Steelers for Life'' guy who led the team to a Super Bowl title during the 2005 season before going into broadcasting, where he remains a CBS studio fixture. Mike Tomlin took over then, and remains in place ... though for all of the relative success, the Steelers haven't won a playoff game in eight years.
The franchise has spent this offseason making a big push with big changes that include adding veterans Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jonnu Smith, Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey.
Cowher mentioned the idea of a "degree of urgency" to make this work .... but also warned of the need for patience.

"I think the biggest thing right now is going out there and try to bring this whole thing together," Cowher said. "A lot of change in terms of the faces of this team. That doesn't happen overnight. It takes time.''

This offseason, the UNC football team went big with its latest head coaching hire: 8-time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick. Despite never previously coaching at the college level, Belichick's NFL resumé speaks for itself. He turned the New England Patriots from a decent franchise into the NFL's most-feared dynasty, developing the greatest football player to walk this earth in Tom Brady. Belichick is no stranger to the Tar Heels, though. Belichick's dad, Steve, was an assistant coach in Chapel Hill from 1953-1955. At the ACC Kickoff event on Thursday afternoon in Charlotte, Belichick spoke about the opportunity to come back and coach college football, digging in on player development. 'I've always wanted to coach in college – and I'm glad to have the opportunity to be at a great school like Carolina," Belichick said in front of a packed media room. "The great thing about working with college players is the growth and development that I've seen with them. Developing players is really what coaching is. We take great pride in that. A Carolina player is a player who wants to be a good football player, who wants to work hard, who wants to make a commitment towards improving on a regular basis, both training and team execution on the field." UNC hired Belichick back in December 2024, so he's now going on month seven working with his new players. Several people are expecting a championship-caliber Tar Heels team in 2025, but it all depends on how Belichick develops his guys. Raiders releasing Christian Wilkins one year after signing him to $110 million contract amid injury drama
The Raiders are releasing standout defensive tackle Christian Wilkins in a shocking move after he completed just one year of the five-year, $110 million contract he signed in 2024, the team announced. The release is with the designation of terminated vested veteran, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, and the Raiders are voiding the remaining $35.2 million off the guaranteed money that he has left on his contract. Wilkins filed a grievance with the NFLPA on Thursday over the decision. The decision was made due to the way Wilkins was treating the rehab for the foot injury that cost him all but five games last season.
