Speaking at the the Ngelayakng Daunt Bonos 2025 programme in Kampung Pasir Tengah, Lundu on Saturday night, Billy pledged his full support for any initiative aimed at uplifting and preserving the identity and traditions of the Rara. 'At the recent Narakng Salako Rara programme in Lundu, the Rara community performed the distinctive Bari' Dance, which left a lasting impression on the attendees. 'The Bari' Dance will be featured at next year's state-level Gawai Dayak celebration in 2026 to showcase the Rara community's cultural richness,' he said. The Rara, along with the Salako community, are two Bidayuh sub-ethnic groups residing mainly in Lundu and Sematan districts. During the same event, Billy also officiated the opening of the newly upgraded 'Rumah Adat' (traditional house) of Kampung Pasir Tengah, which was fully restored and enhanced this year. Skills-based programmes key to tackling youth drug issues, says Opar rep
Billy (second right) presents the mock cheque for the MRP grant to Sim, as Albert (left) and Tan look on. MIRI (June 15): Constructive and skills-based programmes are crucial intervention tools in the rising youth involvement in drug-related issues. This was highlighted by Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang when met after a visit to the Domino Academy here recently, where he praised the academy for offering impactful initiatives in financial literacy, community service, entrepreneurship, and soft skills training. 'All these would further position the academy as a crucial force in building socially-conscious future leaders. 'Have faith in what you do, remain humble, and always serve with sincerity. Leadership begins with values and a sense of responsibility to the community. 'Real development is not just about running programmes, but about shaping a generation that leads with integrity, compassion and conviction,' he said in a brief remark. The visit underscored the state's commitment to youth development and showcased how collaboration between community leaders and local organisations such as Domino Academy could create impactful change at the grassroots level. During his visit, Billy handed over a Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation of RM31,311 to the Miri Domino Charity Association. The grant was meant to support the 'Experiential Leadership and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp' slated for this Aug 23-24 in Kuching. The programme would focus on practical learning and values-based leadership, and targets youths from the Opar constituency. Also present were the association's vice president Sim Poh Giap, secretary Zoel Tan, committee member Albert Lawrence as well as the academy's trainees and interns. Opar rep calls for increased monthly allowance for community leaders, village chiefs to RM1,700
Billy says this has been discussed in several recent House sittings, but no decision has been made by the government so far. – Ukas photo KUCHING (May 21): Billy Sujang (GPS-Opar) has proposed that the allowances for community leaders and village chiefs (KMKKs) be increased to at least RM1,700 per month, equivalent to the minimum wage in the public sector. He said the proposal is timely and necessary to recognise the vital role played by KMKKs in coordinating government programmes, maintaining village harmony, and helping vulnerable groups such as the elderly, persons with disabilities, and low-income families. 'With a more reasonable allowance, they would be more enthusiastic to carry out their duties, while producing more quality and dedicated grassroots leaders,' he said in his Motion of Appreciation to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today. According to Billy, the issue of allowances for KMKKs has been discussed in several recent House sittings, but no decision has been made by the government so far. 'KMKKs are an important link between the government and the current monthly allowance rates are RM1,300 for Pemanca, RM1,100 for Penghulu, and RM900 for Ketua Kaum. 'These amounts are no longer seen as commensurating with their responsibilities, workload, and time commitment,' he said. On another matter, Billy drew the attention of the august House to the condition of Lundu Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Sarawak. He noted that the building is now more than 60 years old, with the majority of its facilities outdated and no longer suitable for a functioning healthcare facility. 'This is unacceptable for a community that deserves better healthcare services. 'Given the new hospital site is already prepared, my fellow colleague from Tanjong Datu Azizul Adenan and I had brought up this issue in the august House last year, urging the federal government to approve and allocate funds for the construction of a new Lundu District Hospital. 'Modernising our healthcare facilities is not just an improvement; it is a necessity for providing quality healthcare to our residents,' he said.
