Rara culture deserves greater recognition, promotion, says Opar rep

KUCHING (June 30): The unique culture of the Rara community, a small Bidayuh sub-ethnic group, deserves greater recognition and promotion, despite their presence being concentrated in only three villages within the Lundu district, said Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang.
Speaking at the the Ngelayakng Daunt Bonos 2025 programme in Kampung Pasir Tengah, Lundu on Saturday night, Billy pledged his full support for any initiative aimed at uplifting and preserving the identity and traditions of the Rara.
'At the recent Narakng Salako Rara programme in Lundu, the Rara community performed the distinctive Bari' Dance, which left a lasting impression on the attendees.
'The Bari' Dance will be featured at next year's state-level Gawai Dayak celebration in 2026 to showcase the Rara community's cultural richness,' he said.
The Rara, along with the Salako community, are two Bidayuh sub-ethnic groups residing mainly in Lundu and Sematan districts.
During the same event, Billy also officiated the opening of the newly upgraded 'Rumah Adat' (traditional house) of Kampung Pasir Tengah, which was fully restored and enhanced this year.

In his speech, the Premier said the involvement of 55 villages under Gedong District in the celebration showed the community's high level of cooperation and commitment in making the event a success. He also called on all parties to continue fostering the spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and cooperation for the development of a prosperous and peaceful state. During the ceremony, guests also participated in prayers to pay respect for Abang Johari's wife, the late Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who passed away on June 23. Sikie: Longhouse safety bureaus essential to prevent fire tragedies

Sikie said that in light of recent incidents, such as the fire in Pekan Sangan and an earlier blaze this year at Rumah Radin Nyawai in Jalan Bukut, Balingian, proactive steps must be taken. 'Every longhouse must set up a dedicated safety bureau tasked with monitoring and promoting fire safety among its residents,' he said during the launch of the longhouse fire safety campaign, community firefighter programme and -Suri initiative at Rumah Jugah Injing, Tatau yesterday. The Kakus assemblyman commended the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for organising such a vital awareness programme. He outlined the key responsibilities of the proposed bureau, including reminding residents to switch off gas stoves and electrical appliances immediately after use. He also emphasised that new longhouse constructions should prioritise safety, such as using brick walls that extend up to the roof to help prevent the rapid spread of fire. Additionally, he urged residents to engage certified electricians for any electrical wiring work and to avoid overloading power sockets. 'Each electrical appliance should have its own socket. Overloading can be extremely dangerous and is a common cause of fire,' he said. Zone 5 Bintulu Bomba investigation officer Mohammad Asraf Ahmad, who was present at the event, said Bomba aims to establish community firefighter units in longhouses located far from fire stations, as longhouse fires account for the highest number of fire-related incidents in Sarawak. 'The goal of this programme is to educate longhouse residents about fire prevention and safety. Awareness is the first line of defence,' he said. A fire extinguisher demonstration was also conducted during the event by the Tatau fire station team.
