Bilt raised $250 million in a round led by General Catalyst and real estate investor GID, which were joined by home lender United Wholesale Mortgage, according to a letter to customers that was shared with Bloomberg.

Bilt to last? Inside the points-obsessed startup that rewards you for paying rent on time

The night is young when Bilt Rewards founder and CEO Ankur Jain steps inside Manhattan's ABC Cocina restaurant on a Monday in early spring. Vintage chandeliers glint overhead as the 35-year-old Jain, in jeans and sneakers, makes his way through the crowd, shaking hands, his winsome smile comfortably affixed. We're here for a recurring comedy show that's offered to members of Bilt, the loyalty program and payments platform for renters that Jain founded in 2019. As usual, the show sold out—through a combination of dollars and Bilt points—in minutes. As we find our seats, Jain disappears briefly, reemerging with martinis. Over the next hour, a half dozen comedians take the stage to deliver their takes on politics, parenting, dating, and more. Jain joins in on the biggest laughs, slapping the table in approval. And when the evening's final comedian takes a dig at Bilt itself, which has close to 5 million members and is valued at more than $3 billion, calling it a 'cult' and suggesting that the audience rob its founder of his 'billion dollars' that very night, Jain doesn't flinch. In a way, Bilt did start out as a cult—one aimed at credit card enthusiasts who collect points and miles with near-religious fervor. The startup first broke through with the Bilt Rewards Mastercard, which offers users rewards points for rent payments. The card launched to the public in March 2022 with a party at One Vanderbilt, Midtown Manhattan's tallest skyscraper. Mayor Eric Adams attended and A$AP Rocky performed. Credit cards are a cutthroat business, but no one had ever tried securing a place in the wallets of affluent young professionals by focusing on rent, the biggest financial burden for many. (In the U.S., residential tenants pay $750 billion in rent each year.) Eighteen months later, Bilt had activated more than a million accounts and won over the kind of reward maximizers who treat The Points Guy blog as gospel. Brian Kelly, the 'Points Guy' himself, is a Bilt investor.

The top 10 scoring players will be this month's rent winners, and the next top scoring 1,000 members will nab some extra Bilt Points. How Bilt Rent Day works Bilt Rewards aims to make paying rent, which typically falls on the first day of each month just a little bit more fun. Bilt Rent Day falls on the first of every month, and Bilt members who fire up the Bilt Rewards app can book complimentary SoulCycle classes, earn extra points by playing trivia games, and participate in various promotions with exciting rewards such as a free month's worth of rent. Earning rewards on rent payments Bilt Rent Day is part of the Bilt Mastercard® incentives program, which helps renters earn rewards on rent payments. Most credit cards charge a fee for paying rent by credit card, and many landlords refuse to accept rent payments by card because of the high fees associated with processing credit card transactions. The Bilt Mastercard® absorbs those fees, and throws in generous rewards to boot: Renters earn 1 point on rent payments without the transaction fee (up to 100,000 points each calendar year), 3 points on dining, 2 points on travel, and 1 point on other purchases (use the card 5 times each statement period to earn points). Special promotions and bonus points Bilt Mastercard® cardholders regularly get opportunities to earn bonus points. Cardholders earn 3 points per dollar on dining and 2 points on travel at all times, plus 1 point on everything else when you use the card five times during a statement period. On Bilt Rent Day, all rewards are doubled, except on rent payments, up to 1,000 points: Restaurant dining now earns 6 points per dollar, travel earns 4 points per dollar, and regular spending outside of rent earns 2 points per dollar. Bilt Dining The Bilt Dining program allows everyone — even non-Bilt card members — to earn bonus points on eating out. Participating restaurants in dozens of cities offer bonus points for every dollar spent at that location. Anyone who links a credit card to the Bilt Rewards app can earn these bonus points — this way, you can "double-dip" rewards if you prefer to pay for restaurant spend on a card that earns generous rewards on dining. Participating in Bilt Rent Day You can participate in Bilt Rent Day even if you don't pay rent. Here's how: Eligibility and signup process You'll need a Bilt Rewards account to participate in Bilt Rent Day activities. Sign up at Bilt Rewards, and link your Bilt Mastercard® to the account if you have one. Then download the Bilt Rewards app onto your mobile device to participate. Every month, bonus activities will be announced a few days ahead of time, so keep an eye out for free fitness class sign-ups or other time-sensitive activities. Then on the first of the month, log back in to look for restaurants offering elevated dining rewards, play games to earn extra Bilt points, and more. Making rent payments through Bilt Rent payments also take place within the Bilt Rewards app. Click on the "pay rent" button toward the bottom of the app, and follow the instructions on the screen. There are two options: "Pay rent online" or "pay by check." It's easiest to pay rent via the Bilt Mastercard®, since it doesn't charge transaction fees. Pay rent online If your building allows online rent payments, use the virtual routing number and account number provided within the app to send your transaction just like you would set up an online draft through your bank account. Pay by check If your landlord doesn't allow online payments, you can request a rent check via the Bilt app. Complete the setup process by sharing your landlord's contact and payment information, and your rent check will automatically be disbursed on your behalf each month. You may need to finesse the timing of your payments to ensure that your rent checks arrive on the required date each month to avoid late fees. Maximizing your rewards Strategies for increasing points on Bilt Rent Day Bilt Rent Day promotions change monthly, but these best practices can help you make the most of each bonus opportunity. Dine out on Bilt Rent Day Cardholders earn 6 points per dollar on dining on Bilt Rent Day, and can double up on extra rewards by visiting Bilt dining partners that earn additional points per dollar spent. Best practices for redeeming Bilt points The rewards earned from Bilt Rent Day can be substantial if you max out every opportunity. Bilt Points are most valuable when transferred to airline partners. Our guide to the value of Bilt Points can help you strategize the best travel opportunities and redemption rewards. You can also redeem your points toward rent payments or paying down your statement balance, or use them to pay for products through the Bilt Collection. Benefits beyond rent payments Travel and lifestyle partnerships Bilt has several travel and lifestyle partnerships with various brands, such as SoulCycle. Bilt members who book SoulCycle classes through the app often earn bonus points or class credits toward future workouts. Home ownership credits Renters interested in owning their own homes someday can benefit from Bilt Rewards as well. Bilt reports to major credit bureaus, so timely payments toward your credit card statement balance can help you raise your credit score, qualifying you for better mortgage interest rates and loan terms. Bilt Adds Two New Travel Partners In The Same Month

Bilt Rewards is on a roll this month by adding two new airline travel partners. Japan Airlines and Qatar Airways join the lineup to provide distinct award flights, first-class experiences, plus more ways to maximize your oneworld alliance membership. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 28: A Japan Airlines Boeing 878-9 Dreamliner airplane arrives at Los Angeles International Airport from Tokyo on March 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) Getty Images Starting May 13, 2025, Bilt Rewards members can transfer loyalty points at a 1:1 ratio to their Japan Airlines Mileage Bank account. This announcement marks a 'first' for both loyalty programs, with Bilt being Japan Airlines' first North American 1:1 point transfer partner. Further, the airline is Bilt's first Japan-based airline and its second East Asian collaboration. Ankur Jain, Founder and CEO at Bilt says, 'Now, your housing payment that was once just a monthly expense can unlock premium travel experiences with one of Asia's most respected airlines, giving our members access to Japan and beyond through JAL's extensive network and oneworld Alliance partnerships." Bilt members can also start redeeming their miles within seven days of opening a Mileage Bank account instead of the standard 60-day waiting period that Japan Airlines usually imposes on new members. However, be sure to transfer and book flights before June 1, 2025, when award rates increase. For example, one-way award flight rates from the U.S. West Coast to Tokyo Narita (NRD) or Tokyo Haneda (HND) currently start as low as 70,000 miles during the low season. Japan Airlines is a oneworld alliance member with a flexible stopover with up to three complimentary segments on partner airlines. Bilt members can also compare alliance itineraries and transfer to Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. Effective May 22, Qatar Airways becomes Bilt's 21st transfer partner. Members enjoy a 1:1 transfer ratio to convert Bilt Points into Privilege Club Avios for award flights. This international airline also has point transfer relationships with several credit card loyalty programs, making it easy to pool miles from various accounts to book an exciting trip. Qatar's Qsuite business class is one of the world's best cabin experiences in this ticket class. Your amenities can include a fully lie-flat seat, a privacy door, and premium pajamas. You can also book cross-country trips with domestic alliance partners, including Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. 'Our partnership with Bilt marks an exciting step forward in expanding our footprint in the U.S. market. Together, we are unlocking new opportunities for our Privilege Club members around the world – transforming everyday expenses into exceptional global travel experiences,' says Thierry Antinori, Chief Commercial Officer at Qatar Airways. Both travel partnerships offer exciting premium cabin experiences and flexible stopover policies that make traveling the globe easier. Transferring at a 1:1 ratio helps you secure the most competitive redemption values, especially with the ultra-exclusive Japan Airlines relationship. Related Articles:
