Broome County DA announces funding for 5 local police departments
Five Broome County police agencies will be receiving additional funding to expand community policing during the summer months. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti, joined by local officials, announced on June 17 that his office would be investing $52,500 from the Traffic Diversion Fund, which collects money from traffic tickets, into local law enforcement. The Binghamton Police Department, Endicott Police Department, Johnson City Police Department, Vestal Police Department and the Broome County Sheriff's Office will be receiving $10,500 each. Battisti said the awarded money will be used for existing community policing initiatives in any way that the departments deem necessary to continue the expansion of dedicated bike, foot and car patrols around neighborhoods, parks and other community spaces. "All law enforcement agencies in Broome County have strong, robust community policing initiatives and today's infusion will only enhance their productivity," Battisti said. The resolution to authorize the use of the funding garnered from the Traffic Diversion Program was approved by the Broome County Legislature on June 12. Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge said at the press conference the money his department receives will be going toward bike and foot patrols in the village's downtown area and at neighborhood parks. Endicott Police Chief Patrick Garey said the Village of Endicott Police Department plans to put bike and foot patrols in all business districts and neighborhoods in the village throughout the summer. BPD investigating non-fatal shooting of a Binghamton woman
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton woman is currently in recovery after being shot in the chest on Saturday. On June 7, at approximately 4:15 a.m., the Binghamton Police Department responded to the area of Oak Street and Gerard Avenue after receiving a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a 34-year-old woman with a small-caliber gunshot to her chest. Officers also located several shell casings in the area of 164 Oak Street. The female victim was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. There is no suspect description at this time. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Binghamton Police Detective Bureau at (607)772-7080. Stepped up patrols in Binghamton ahead of summer
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As we head into the summer months, community members can expect to see an increase in police presence in the City of Binghamton. On Tuesday, Mayor Jared Kraham announced that the Binghamton Police Department is increasing traffic patrols in order to reduce speeding and violations. Kraham released the following statement: 'I've heard from a growing number of residents concerned about drivers going too fast through their neighborhoods or running stop signs, putting others at risk. Binghamton Police will be cracking down on speeding and other traffic violations over the coming weeks, with extra patrols focused on reducing the number of drivers who break the law and make our neighborhoods less safe. Alongside foot and bike patrols and other community policing initiatives, this increased traffic enforcement is part of our broader effort to improve neighborhood safety across Binghamton.' During the initiative, Binghamton Police will focus on high traffic areas, giving special attention to school zones, City park zones, and hospital zones. Officers will also use a portable speed trailer, which displays drivers' speed as they pass, to help reduce speeding. Binghamton man pleads guilty to illegal weapon charge
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in Broome County Court Friday. 24-year-old Xavier Tappan-Bright, of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to the charge related to an investigation in January, where the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force discovered a loaded .380 caliber Ruger pistol with six rounds in the magazine while executing a search warrant of an apartment at 10 Felters Road in Binghamton. As a second violent felony offender, Tappan-Bright is expected to be sentenced to eight years in New York State prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. Sentencing is scheduled for August 28, 2025, in Broome County Court. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force led the investigation. The Task Force is made up of members from the Binghamton Police Department, Broome County Sheriff's Department, Endicott Police Department, and Johnson City Police Department.
