Berlin-Brothersvalley never trails in 2A title victory over McCort
HERSHEY (WTAJ) — Berlin-Brothersvalley led wire to wire, beating Bishop McCort 62-50 to win the girls 2A championship Thursday in Hershey. 'It's just a dream come true,' head coach Rachel Prosser said. The Mountaineers led 15-0 early and never looked back as Bryn and Coral Prosser led the charge scoring 47 of the team's 62 points. Coral, a sophomore guard, led all players with 35 points and 15 rebounds. 'They were just ready to go,' Rachel said. 'I don't have a rhyme or reason, but we did a good job.' Bishop McCort, Berlin have plenty of familiarity ahead of PIAA Championship The win is Berlin's first since 2019. The Prossers were there for that one, too. Coral and Bryn served as managers on their mom's team. That 2019 title was the first for the program, and an inspiration for the girls. 'Ever since I saw it the first time seeing the 2019 girls do it, being a manager, that's like, I want to do that now,' Coral said. 'I want that to be me and my teammates. So that's what happened today.' The Prosser family plays a significant role in Berlin-Brothersvalley basketball history. The boys team, led by Tanner Prosser (husband and father) and Pace (son and brother) played for titles in 2023 and 2024. But as the girls said following Thursday's win, their family is deeper than blood. 'Our team, they're my sisters. My whole team is my sisters. And the community behind us is the rest of our family,' Coral said. 'So it's a whole family and it's just so special for all of us.' The matchup between Berlin and Bishop McCort was the first meeting between a district five and six school in the state championship. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bishop McCort, Berlin have plenty of familiarity ahead of PIAA Championship
HERSHEY, Pa. (WTAJ) – The saying 'keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer' is fitting for the PIAA Class 2A Girls Basketball Championship between Berlin-Brothersvalley and Bishop McCort. Before the season, both teams scrimmaged each other but never could have envisioned facing each other to end the year in the Giant Center. 'I know what (Berlin head coach Rachel Prosser) likes to do, what she doesn't like to do, and she knows the same about us,' Crushers head coach John Hahn said. 'They're really good team for us to scrimmage to get us (ready) early and find out what our strengths and weaknesses are,' Prosser said. Saint Francis University announces transition from Division I to Division III athletics Berlin-Brothersvalley used that familiarity to defeat Bishop McCort by seven points back in December, which would make a win in 'Chocolate World' even sweeter for the Crushers. 'It's motivation,' Bishop McCort senior Cami Beppler said. 'It's like we already know them. They know us. So, it's just going to be a battle of who shows up that day and who's better.' 'Since we played them earlier in the season, we know some of their strengths and we will be able to take that knowledge and use it once we play them,' Berlin-Brothersvalley junior Madi Visinsky said. Both teams have improved marginally since their last matchup. The Mountaineers have gone undefeated since then, while the Crushers have a 23-3 record since that loss. 'They have good outside shooters by far, but they also can take it to the basket,' Prosser said. 'It makes it a tough matchup for anybody, which is why they have made it this far.' 'They're a tough team,' Bishop McCort senior Elle Berkebile said. 'They hustle a lot, and they'll show that Thursday, but so do we. So, it's just going to be a battle.' Bishop McCort is seeking its first state championship since 1985, while Berlin-Brothersvalley is looking to win its first since 2019. This is the first time that girls basketball teams from District V and District VI have matched up against each other in the PIAA Championship game. 'I'm just excited that it's Cambria County and Somerset County, that's great for this area,' Hahn said. 'A lot of people get lost on the team from (Philadelphia) and the WPIAL from Pittsburgh but girls' basketball in District VI is as good as anybody's basketball.' For whichever team brings a state title back to the area, you can expect the moment to be special to them. 'I'm very emotional, so I think I'd cry a lot, and I want that ring really badly,' Berkebile said with a smile. The game is set for Thursday at 12 p.m. WTAJ will have coverage of the game on-air and online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bishop McCort, Berlin girls advance to the PIAA Championship
EBENSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) – Just a few weeks ago, Bishop McCort defeated Penns Manor to win the District VI Championship game. On Friday, the Crushers beat the Comets 55-53 to advance to the PIAA Class 2A Championship game for the first time since 2017. 'It's so exciting,' Bishop McCort junior Emma Preuss said. 'We've been just waiting for this moment all season long and we work so hard.' Bishop McCort trailed the majority of the game, but Ava Zucco's go-ahead free throws with 20 seconds left proved to be the difference. 'Coach (John) Hahn and I always make a joke because I'm like a horrible foul shooter under super a lot of pressure,' Zucco said while smiling. 'It was really funny. I tried not to think about it. I just acted like I was in the gym at practice.' Meanwhile in the other side of the bracket, Berlin-Brothersvalley advances to face the Crushers with a 41-38 win over Mountain View. This will be the fifth time since 2019 that a Mountaineers basketball team will be playing in the Giant Center. Berlin's girls team won in its lone appearance back in 2019. Four remain as PIAA semifinals approach
ALTOONA (WTAJ) — Just four teams remain representing central Pennsylvania in the PIAA state basketball tournament as we move into the semifinal round. The four programs, all girls teams, include Bishop McCort, Berlin-Brothersvalley, Bishop Guilfoyle and Bishop Carroll. In Class 2A, Berlin plays Mountain View Friday at Mechanicsburg High School. The game tips off at 6:30. Berlin, led by the Prosser sisters is 25-2, and haven't lost since December, 6. The Mountaineers have won their state tournament matchups by an average of 16 points and may very well be the team to beat in Class 2A. But Mountain View, the District 2 champion, is coming off a 32-14 quarterfinal win over Williams Valley. The Eagles are giving up just 30 points per game. The winner of Berlin and Mountain View will play the winner of Bishop McCort and Penns Manor in the 2A championship. That game will be played at Central Cambria High School on Friday at 7:00 p.m. A McCort-Berlin championship is juicy for the 814, but the Crushers will have to take down the District 6 runners-up Penns Manor, again, in a District 6 championship rematch. Back in February at Mount Aloysius, McCort held off Comets 54-49 in a tight battle. After beating the defending state champs, Kennedy Catholic, McCort is in its best position to get back to the PIAA championship since 2017. The 2A title game is Thursday, March 27 at the Giant Center. On Saturday in class 1A, we get a second District 6 championship rematch when Bishop Guilfoyle plays Bishop Carroll at Altoona High School. The defending 1A champion Marauders are 2-0 this season against the Huskies, winning, on average, by 20 points. But before writing off the Huskies against BG, consider this, Carroll has won its three state games by an average of 30 points and is playing its best basketball of the season right now. The winner of this matchup advances to the 1A championship on Friday, March 28 in Hershey. That team will play the winner of Linville Hill and Lourdes Regional. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bishop McCort hunting history in PIAA Wrestling Championships
HERSHEY, Pa. (WTAJ) – Arguably no team competing in the 2025 PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships in Hershey has higher expectations than Bishop McCort. Last year, the Crushers scored the third-most team points ever but finished in second place behind nationally No. 1 ranked Faith Christian. PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships preview After the tournament, Bishop McCort phenom Bo Bassett said that he and his teammates were hungry for more. In the week leading up to the event, the 2024 PIAA Champion says that hasn't changed. 'Obviously the goal is to always win the tournament but if we can set records and go down in history, that's one step above,' Bassett said. 'That's what we're shooting for, and we've got an awesome team race that's going to go down this weekend.' Faith Christian has been the one hurdle that Bishop McCort hasn't been able to leap over in the past few seasons. To go along with winning the team race in the 2024 PIAA Individual Championships, the Lions have defeated the Crushers in the finals of back-to-back PIAA Team Championships. 'We've won every single tournament we've been at this year except Ironman where they were at and then the (state championship) duel with them,' Bishop McCort junior Jax Forrest said. The postseason shortcomings have given Bishop McCort plenty of motivation to get over the hump this season. Some members of the Crushers have been practicing upwards of four times a day to try and close the gap. 'It just keeps that fire burning inside and it just motivates the team and makes us better at the end of the day,' Bishop McCort senior Devon Magro said. Bishop McCort is hitting its stride at the right time this year as they crushed three regional records last weekend. Plus, the Crushers had 12 wrestlers qualify for the PIAA Championships, which is more than Faith Christian. 'If we wrestle like we did last weekend, I know we'll beat them,' Forrest said. There is also more star power on the team this season with Penn State commit Sam Herring returning from an injury that held him out of the postseason last year to go along with his younger brother Eli and Bo's younger brother Keegan. 'Our confidence is really high already, but some of those guys who wrestled really well, I think their confidence is probably higher right now and that's something that they needed,' Sam Herring said. Chestnut Ridge's Dom Deputy looking to get over PIAA Championships hump 'I like to think that we have the upper hand at this point going in but again, you never know what's going to happen this weekend,' Bo Bassett said. A first-place team finish would mean even more to them than just being the best in Pennsylvania. 'For that one it would mean that we're the best in the country,' Sam Herring said. 'So, that's even cooler.' After day one, the Crushers are currently leading all teams with 58.5 team points. Faith Christian trails them by four points. If Bishop McCort brings the first-place team trophy back to Johnstown, they will be the first team within WTAJ's viewing area to have won the team title in the PIAA Individual Championships since Bald Eagle Area did so back in 1999.
