Ohio State football defensive end C.J. Hicks discusses what has kept him in Columbus
Ohio State linebacker turned defensive end C.J. Hicks committed to the Buckeyes as a 5-star prospect in the 2022 class. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he was listed as the No. 2 linebacker and tenth overall recruit in the cycle. Since then, though, he has flashed his athleticism, but has yet to develop into what everyone thought he would be at linebacker. Some of that might have to do with the scheme the Buckeyes ran under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles -- employing more safeties and only two linebackers at times, but either way, it just hasn't worked out at linebacker. Because of that, Hicks has moved to defensive end to utilize his athleticism and quickness off the edge coming into this year, so we'll see how it all pans out and if he can bust into the depth chart as he learns a brand-new position. Opportunity knocks, but heading into his fourth and maybe final year in Columbus, things have had to be frustrating for Hicks. While appearing on the Bobby Carpenter Show, Hicks was asked what has kept him at Ohio State, and he responded with a familiar response, one that seems to separate the Buckeyes from other programs. "It is the brotherhood. Everybody says that, but there's a group of guys in that locker room that I feel like you don't find everywhere else," Hicks said. "On top of that, the coaches that we have in the coaching room, in the staff, there's not a lot of coaches like that across the country. They care, but at the same point in time, they want you to be the best you can be. They want you to grow 1% better each day instead of just letting you go by just because of who you are and what your name is." You can watch the short exchange below to get a feel for how much respect Hicks has for the program. Here's to rooting for something to finally click for Hicks, and he becomes a menace off the edge in his very last season on the banks of the Olentangy. We know he has the tools; it's hopefully just a matter of figuring out a way he can utilize them the best to have a final-year breakout. Ex-Georgia QB Carson Beck's Massive NIL Deal With Miami Revealed
Ex-Georgia QB Carson Beck's Massive NIL Deal With Miami Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the NIL era of college football, quarterbacks don't have to make the NFL to become millionaires. Signal-callers are reaching paydays in the multi-millions per season at the college level. Advertisement There's few better examples of that than former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck. On3's Pete Nakos reported Sunday that Beck will make in excess of $4 million to play for the Miami Hurricanes this fall. "One thing is clear: The price of an elite quarterback is not dropping," Nakos wrote. "In this year's college football transfer portal, jaw-dropping quarterback numbers included a $3 million offer from Duke for Darian Mensah. "Georgia's Carson Beck transferred to Miami and stands to make more than $4 million. Missouri agreed to terms on a $1.5 million deal with Penn State transfer Beau Pribula in December, too." Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck© Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Bobby Carpenter Show host Anthony Schlegel said during the first week of June that Beck was going to make $4.3 million with his NIL deal in 2025. Advertisement Schlegel said that is ranked second-highest in college football behind only Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning. Beck announced his decision to transfer from Georgia to Miami on January 10, which was just a little more than a week after the Bulldogs suffered their playoff defeat to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Beck didn't play in that game because of an elbow injury, which he sustained in the SEC Championship Game versus Texas. During his final season with the Bulldogs, Beck completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,485 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The quarterback posted significantly better statistics during 2023. Advertisement In Miami, Beck will replace quarterback Cam Ward, who became the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Ex-Ohio State Coach Delivers Verdict on Arch Manning's Reported $6.5 Million NIL Valuation
Ex-Ohio State Coach Delivers Verdict on Arch Manning's Reported $6.5 Million NIL Valuation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NIL deals being signed by college athletes continue to climb, and in most cases, it's not about raw talent, but rather about players with high visibility who have built up a brand. Advertisement One such example is Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, who hasn't yet made a significant impact on the field, but with his family's pedigree, everyone already knows his name and expects a lot from this 21-year-old. During a recent episode of the "Bobby Carpenter Show," Anthony Schlegel, who has had two stints with the Ohio State Buckeyes, his alma mater, as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, predicted Manning would have to lead the nation in NIL valuations. "People that were returning that would require the dollar amount, Arch Manning would be that guy," said Carpenter as he was trying to recall the best players in the sport. Schlegel and Carpenter were reviewing a top 10 list of college football players and discussing how Manning was ranked at No. 1 with a $6.5 million valuation. Carpenter, another Ohio State alumnus who played for the Buckeyes from 2002 to 2005, pointed out Manning's NIL total comes from endorsements only, not from Texas' boosters. Texas is projected to have spent somewhere between $35 and $40 million on NIL deals, according to Kirk Bohls of the Houston Chronicle. In his report, Bohls quoted a source that believes these years of big spending won't last, even among the nation's best programs. 'It's just unsustainable,' the source said via Bohls.
