Alex Palou Breaks Mini Drought and Races to Victory in XPEL Grand Prix at Road America
Alex Palou's dominance in the 2025 INDYCAR season took a brief pause after he won the Indianapolis 500. He was knocked out of the race at the Detroit Grand Prix early and finished eighth at the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 last week. That ended up being the end of Palou's drought. He raced to victory again on Sunday, finishing first in the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. Felix Rosenqvist finished second and Santino Ferrucci finished third. Kyle Kirkwood and Marcus Armstrong rounded out the top five, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Scott Dixon held the lead late in Sunday's race. But he had to go to pit road with two laps remaining, allowing Palou to regain the lead. Palou led for six of the 55 laps on Sunday, while Dixon finished ninth after leading for 27 laps. Sunday's win marked Palou's sixth victory in nine INDYCAR races this season. He sang "Red Solo Cup" right after the victory, too. There were also plenty of cautions in Sunday's race. Spin-outs and crashes forced Josef Newgarden, Sting Ray Robb and Robert Shwartzman to not finish the race. Practice Shots: Drivers Start To Tame Beautiful Beast Road America
INDYCAR The NTT INDYCAR SERIES will reach its halfway point midway through Sunday's XPEL Grand Prix at Road America, and with that comes several aspects to assess. Like Alex Palou's pursuit of a third consecutive series championship and fourth title in the past five years. Like the challenges of Palou by Pato O'Ward, Kyle Kirkwood and others. Like how beginning Sunday there will be nine races staged held over the next 11 weekends. There's a lot to consume, for sure. Meantime, drivers and their teams warmed up at Road America with the first practice of the weekend. These three things stood out in the session: The Return to Road America Let's start with this middle-of-Wisconsin facility. You roll through the first half of the season with an assortment of racetracks – some located in prettier settings than others – and then you roll up to Road America, and you wonder why you haven't been camping with the family in years. If an artist were to create scenery around a motorsports venue, he'd proudly draw this place, then celebrate with a brat lathered with mustard. The track is 4.014 miles, with one breathtaking location after another. Canada Corner isn't just the best-named spot in INDYCAR, it's stuck deep in the woods with horsepower reverberating through the trees. Cars sprint to that spot before darting hard right up the hill to what seems like civilization. It's exhilarating. But be warned: Road America can bite like few other tracks in this country. Speeds are high; the trappings consequential. This is beauty and a beast. Turn 1 was the scene of the worst accident of A.J. Foyt's career in 1990. Parker Johnstone barrel-rolled through that corner in 1996. The bridge at Turn 4 is what Memo Gidley smashed in 2001. At the end of that long straight, Bryan Herta was facing backward after a spin in 1998 and watched Alex Barron's car squarely land on top of his. And then there was Katherine Legge's indescribable ride down the backstretch in 2006. View the replay at your discretion. Palou and Josef Newgarden both crashed at Road America last year. Scott Dixon and Will Power tangled in a big one a couple years back. At these speeds, high alert is advised. Team Penske Needs Bounce-Back The most successful organization in the history of this sport is coming off its worst weekend in more than three decades, and it was maybe worse than that when considering Team Penske drivers finished 24th, 25th and 27th in the 27-car field last weekend in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway. The cars driven by Newgarden, Scott McLaughlin and Power each failed to finish the race, something that hadn't happened to Roger Penske's team since 1994. But here's the difference between those years: When cars driven by Al Unser Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy failed to finish that day at Michigan International Speedway, they still finished eighth, 10th and 15th in that 28-car field, and they went on to finish 1-2-3 in the championship. Unser also won the Indianapolis 500 that year. Eight races into this season, Power ranks seventh, McLaughlin eighth and Newgarden 16th in the standings, and each is seeking his first race win of the year. Here's the good connection between those two seasons: The 1994 gang bounced back to finish 1-2-3 in the ensuing race, held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This Penske bunch stood together on last year's Road America podium with Power winning the race followed by Newgarden and McLaughlin, and they were three of the fastest six cars in Friday's practice. Power and Newgarden are each two-time series winners at Road America. Palou Ready for Road America Palou was the overlooked driver in last week's World Wide Technology Raceway incident that saw Newgarden smash into the wounded car of rookie Louis Foster on the frontstretch. Palou was first on the scene of Foster's lazy spin, but had the advantage of seeing what Newgarden couldn't. 'I was lucky there,' Palou said. 'I had to take a decision of going up (the track) or going low, and I went up because I saw that the car was potentially going to go down, and Josef unfortunately didn't have that option. Those moments sometimes you are lucky and you get it right, and sometimes you don't. I'm glad I was on the right side there.' Palou said the expansive Road America circuit and its numerous passing opportunities could offer a lot of incidents in a race or none at all. But he also has noticed that many of his fellow competitors have started 'playing a little bit more aggressive than probably at the beginning of the season' as goals haven't yet been achieved. Palou's goal is to win at Road America for the third time, and the fact he has won in recent odd years (2021 and 2023) has him optimistic about this visit in 2025. Palou had a pair of subpar results in this season's past two races – 25th after being punted into the tires in the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear and eighth at WWTR – but he still holds a sizable lead over second place O'Ward (73 points) and third place Kirkwood (75 points). Kirkwood has been the driver on the charge, winning each of those two races. Kirkwood also posted the fastest lap of Friday's practice (1 minute, 44.9881 seconds). Palou's best lap ranked ninth. More"I got a bit of a wiggle ... got a bit too high and went into the marbles," Foster said. "I just couldn't stop the car from spinning and, obviously, a pretty scary impact with myself and Josef. I'm glad he is OK." Newsweek Sports reported another dramatic crash involving Foster from early this month in Detroit. Foster suffered from a front right suspension failure on the fastest section of the circuit, leading him to lose control of his car and clip the barrier. Unfortunately, the momentum meant he went straight into Felix Rosenqvist before sliding down the escape road. Rosenqvist's car was sent into the tire wall with significant force. Foster released a statement on social media after the crash. He said: "Firstly thank you to everyone for all the messages, I am ok. I've talked to Felix and I'm also very happy that he is ok. Massive thank you to the IndyCar medical team and IndyCar as a whole for continuing to put driver safety first. "To explain what happened: on lap 83, approaching T3 at 180mph, my front right suspension failed. This was by far the biggest and scariest crash I've had in my career. I'm very thankful to be able to get out under my own power. "We believe it was caused by a bolt failure on the mounting block, but more internal investigation is required to be sure. "Biggest bummer is that we were on for our season best result, and we led multiple laps, up the front on our strategy. But this is racing, sometimes it doesn't love you back. Gearing Up: Tightening Title Race To Heat Up at Road America
INDYCAR With back-to-back NTT INDYCAR SERIES victories, Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood has sliced his points deficit to championship leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing in half. Still, Kirkwood still has considerable work to do to earn his first series title as the season reaches its halfway point this weekend at Road America. Kirkwood, who won Sunday night's Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway, still trails Palou by 75 points, and Palou has some of his favorite tracks lined up. Palou has won two races at the Wisconsin track that hosts Sunday's XPEL Grand Prix at Road America presented by AMR, and he is a former pole and race winner at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the site of the ensuing race Sunday, July 6. SEE: Road America Event Details Kirkwood has neither won at Road America nor Mid-Ohio, although he is riding a wave of momentum after winning both of this month's races: the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear and the race at WWTR. Sunday's win was his first on an oval after four street circuit wins. 'It does,' Kirkwood said of a 75-point deficit feeling at least somewhat manageable. 'It's double digits again. Triple digits are never a good sign in a championship. Moving closer. It's still a long ways to go. '(Palou) is good at a lot of races that we're coming up to, so those are the ones that are going to really count. (WWTR) has been a track that we haven't been amazing at, so it's great to claw back some points. But everybody knows we're going to go to Road America and he's going to put on a show there, and we'll have to do everything in our power to keep him from looking shiny once again on road courses.' Kirkwood would be in a better points position if not for being penalized for his car being outside the equipment rules in last month's Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. Rather than finishing sixth and netting 28 points, Kirkwood landed 32nd and received just five points. The Floridian could be within 52 points of the lead, which is still a race's worth of points, but the deficit would be less. For Palou, who is seeking his third consecutive season championship and fourth in five years, the next two races represent an opportunity to regain his footing. He got knocked into the tire barrier in Detroit and finished 25th. At WWTR, he nearly got lapped at the halfway point before scrambling up to finish eighth. Still, after winning five of the season's first six races, this could be considered a drought. Last year at Road America, Palou and Kirkwood finished fourth and fifth, respectively, each leading three laps. But neither was a match for Team Penske's three drivers, which earned the team's first podium sweep in seven years. Will Power beat Josef Newgarden to the finish line by 3.2609 seconds with Scott McLaughlin third. The trio combined to lead 27 of the 55 laps. Team Penske is coming off a damaging race at WWTR. Power and Newgarden were involved in accidents; McLaughlin had equipment failure. They finished 24th, 25th and 27th in the 27-car field and remain winless as a group this season. Palou (five wins) and Kirkwood (three) remain the only race winners this season, helping Honda win the first eight races of the season. It has been 45 years since a pair of drivers had a comparable start to the season. It would be foolish to sleep on Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward, who at WWTR scored his series-leading third runner-up finish of the season. He has series wins at three of the remaining eight venues on the schedule. He is second in the standings, 73 points behind Palou and two points in front of Kirkwood. Palou still controls the race to the Astor Challenge Cup, but Kirkwood and O'Ward have made it interesting with strong results this month.
